Physics is a dynamic and exciting field of study; there is a vast amount of information to learn and everyday more is added. This course is designed to give you an overview of the major concepts in classical physics. The study of physics is a philosophy that attempts to open student’s minds and make them aware and to appreciate the physical world around them. This course is designed to give students the knowledge of physics-based principles and concepts. Much of it requires algebra based mathematics. Other areas of study focus on concepts and attempt to describe how properties change or stay the same. Physics gives students the ability to solve problems, a practical tool that will be used in their future, regardless of occupation. In order to meet the high standards expected at Panther Creek and to provide an opportunity for ALL students to learn, the following expectations will implemented in this class.Be present and on time.Be prepared and engaged in learning.Be a person of character.Be safe and comply with Panther Creek High School and WCPSS policies.Grading Scale - A= 90-100B= 80-89C=70-79D= 60-69F=Less than 60Course Grade Breakdown AP PhysicsTests & Quizzes – Chapter, Unit and Midterm 70% Labs, activities, projects, and presentations, etc. 25% Participation/Student Engagement 5% Participation/Student EngagementYour participation in class on certain activities will count in your grade. The category to find these items is included in “Student Engagement.” Warm-up exercises, whiteboard problems, study guides, homework, lab prep and cleanup are examples of items that are included. Attendance at SMART lunch described below will also be added to this category. SMART Lunch The expectation is that you attend 4 SMART lunch sessions per quarter. This is a good opportunity to receive help or to do make-up work. Attending two of the SMART lunches must be completed prior to interim reports and two more after interims but before the quarter ends. Completing the SMART lunch requirement will result in the lowest quiz grade being dropped for the quarter.Labs - Labs are an integral part of this course. Due to equipment and time constraints, lab activities are often difficult to make up. A modified assignment may be given as an alternative to a missed lab. You are responsible for all information covered in the lab. Please take time to read the safety and expectations sections that are included in this packet.Missed Tests or Assignments - It is your responsibility to make up any missed tests or assignments. Please familiarize yourself with School Board Policy 6000.4 & 6000.5 concerning make-up work. Check with me to make arrangements for makeup work or extra help. Be sure to check Powerschool on a regular basis to see how you are progressing in class and to check on missing assignments.Assignments may be accepted late BUT will drop a letter grade (10%) for each day it is late from whatever grade is made on that assignment up to 40%. Assignments will not be accepted late after graded papers have been returned or discussed in class or after a unit ends. Homework should be completed before class on the day that it is due.Tardiness Procedure for Period 1 and 3 - managed by administration Tardiness Procedure for Period 2 and 4 - managed by teachers Tardies - If you are tardy to class, please sign the TARDY LOG.3rd Tardy –Parent contact/ Warning5th Tardy – Administrative Referral4th Tardy – Contact Parent & Teacher LDAdditional Tardy – Admin Referral, ASD, privilege revocationMaterials: Notebook, paper, pencils or pens, and agenda. GRAPH Paper & Composition Book is recommended. SCIENTIFIC CALCULATOR IS A MUST. Graphing calculator is preferred. Calculators need to be brought to class every day. Safety: Students must sign and follow the safety contracts explained in class and must keep a copy of the student contract in their class folder at all times. Any student not following the guidelines will be asked to leave the lab and will lose credit. Parents will also be asked to sign the safety contract.Academic Integrity: Students in this class will be expected to review and follow the “Academic Integrity” outline included in the PCHS Parent/Student Handbook.Intervention - If a student scores a D or F (scores 68% or below), he/she has the opportunity to participate in an intervention plan to improve content knowledge.? The student will come in during SMART lunch or after school to improve their mastery of the subject, then an alternative assessment will be given at that time, or on another day.KEYS TO SUCCESSStay caught up. With block scheduling we move very quickly and staying caught up will help immensely. You have HOMEWORK EVERY NIGHT! Written homework is due at the start of class—before we go over the assignment. If it is not a written assignment, it is to study notes, review vocabulary words, labs completion, study guides or just go over information we have covered in the book and in class notes.LEARN THE VOCABULARY as we go along. Physics is very vocabulary driven, almost like learning a foreign language. Get help when you need it, DON’T WAIT! Students are expected to attend 4 SMART lunch sessions per quarter according to PCHS Policy. SMART lunch times are listed below. (SMART lunch hours are listed on the door.)Bring a separate binder or a section of a large binder for physics. Keep ALL your physics papers in it. (Keep some notebook paper also for written assignments.) Have a place to write down short and long term assignments. Use a composition book for all physics labs—this notebook may be needed to receive college course credit.Paying attention and remaining in class for the entire period is important. Students are expected to handle all personal business outside of class time. Hopefully emergencies will not occur, but if they do, they will be handled on an individual basis. This also includes keeping your cell phones turned off and put away. Note: multitasking decreases your learning as well as the learning of those around you—please keep your phone off unless it is being used in class.Review the document, “Study Tips for Physics Students” in Compass. It is loaded with great ideas.GENERAL SYLLABUS BY UNIT (Subject to change as needed)UnitTopicsIntroUnit conversion, sig. figures, sci. notation, graphing, lab format, scientific skills1 D KinematicsDistance, position, velocity, speed, and acceleration2 D KinematicsFrame of reference, vectors, projectile motion, and circular motionForcesInertia, force, mass, weight, Newton’s laws of motion, friction, and centripetal forceEnergyKinetic energy, potential energy, gravitational potential energy, elastic energy, thermal energy, work, conservation of energy, and powerMomentum Momentum, impulse, and conservation of momentumWaves Waves, sound waves, harmonics, mechanical waves, reflection, refraction, and Doppler effectElectricityStatic electricity, Ohm’s law, current electricity, series circuits, parallel circuits, and powerRotationalRotational motion, centripetal motion, torque ................
