The Holy Spirit in the 21st Century

Lesson 2

The Lord Jesus Christ

It is essential that we know the truth of who the Lord Jesus Christ is because He alone is our salvation. It is only through faith in Christ that we are saved (John 14:6; Romans 3:22, 10:9-10). If we receive an incorrect teaching about Him, it can jeopardize our salvation since our faith is placed in the wrong person (see 1 Corinthians 15:2) This is the major danger of cults, many of them have distorted the scriptural truths about Jesus (see 2 John 7)

In this lesson we will explore who Jesus Christ is so that we may confidently say, along with the Apostle Paul, “…I know whom I have believed.” (2 Timothy 1:12)

1. Jesus Christ is the Second Person of the Triune Godhead

a. Jesus was not a created being; He is eternally existent with the Father.

• In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father…John 1:1-3, 14.

• “…Father, glorify me…with the glory I had with you before the world began.” John 17:5

• “I tell you the truth,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I AM!” John 8:35

b. Jesus is not a lesser, or lower ranking god. He is of the same substance, and is equal with, the Father.

• For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form.” Colossians 2:9

• Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped. Philippians 2:6

2. Jesus is the Only Begotten Son of God

a. There is no other. Jesus Christ is the only Son of God. In the following scriptures, the word “begotten” means “the sole child, one-of-a-kind.” Begotten refers to His uniqueness, not to His conception.

• For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” John 3:16, NKJV

• …the love of God was manifested towards us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him. 1 John 4:9

3. Jesus’ Birth

a. Jesus Christ willingly left His throne in heaven to come to earth in the form of a man.

• (Jesus) who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. Philippians 2:6-7 (NKJV)

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

b. Jesus Christ was not conceived by man, but rather through the miraculous work of the Holy Spirit. His mother, Mary, was still a virgin at the time of His birth. (See Matthew 1:25)

…what is conceived in her (Mary) is from the Holy Spirit. Matthew 1:20

The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel – which means, “God with us.” Matthew 1:23 (Also Isaiah 7:14)

4. Jesus’ Humanity

a. Jesus was both divine and human. His divine nature and human nature co-existed in His human body at the same time.

• Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from god…1 John 4:2

• …but made himself nothing , taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. Philippians 2:7

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

b. While living in human form, Jesus had a free will and was exposed to the same temptations that every human faces, yet He did not once sin.

• God made him who had no sin to be sin for us. 2 Corinthians 5:21

• For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are – yet was without sin. Hebrews 4:15

5. Jesus’ Miraculous Ministry

a. Miraculous signs were a daily part of Jesus’ public ministry.

• This, the first of his miraculous signs Jesus performed. ..He thus revealed his glory, and his disciples put their faith in him.” John 2:11

• Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. John 20:30-31

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

b. Jesus affirmed that He was, indeed, the Christ. Only the Son of God could meet both the physical and spiritual needs of the people as He did.

• (John) sent his disciples to ask him (Jesus), “Are you the one who was to come, or should we expect someone else?” Jesus replied, “Go back and report to John what you hear and see: the blind receive sight, the lame walk, these who have leprosy are cured. The deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor.” Matthew 11:3-4

6. Jesus’ Death (Matthew 27: 45-55; Mark 15:33-41; Luke 23:44-49)

a. Jesus was born to give up His life through service and sacrifice. He came to die so that all believers may have eternal life through His shed blood. (Matthew 16:21; Mark 8:31; Luke 9:22)

• For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Mark 10:45

• And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death-even death on a cross. Philippians 2:8

• God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood.” Romans 3:25

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

b. Christ’s death was literal – not symbolic. He became the final sacrificial offering for all sin at the moment His spirit left His body and he stopped breathing.

• Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” When he had said this, he breathed his last.” Luke 23:46

• And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit. Matthew 27:50 (Also Mark 15:37)

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

7. Jesus’ Resurrection (Matthew 28:1-10; Mark 16:1-8; Luke 24:1-9; John 20:1-9)

a. On the day Jesus died, His body was prepared for burial and He was placed in a new tomb. but His stay there was only temporary, for He rose from the dead three days later.

• But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him. Acts 2:24

• For what I received I passed on to you…that Christ died for our sins, according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures. 1 Corinthians 15:3-4

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

b. Jesus’ disciples had barely begun to absorb the fact that He had been crucified when Jesus appeared to them after His resurrection. They though He was a ghost. Jesus had to show them that He now had a glorified body.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

c. After His resurrection, Jesus was seen by many people during the course of a little over a month. He was not a figment of someone’s imagination. He was now the victorious Savior who had conquered death and was alive.

• To more than five hundred of the brothers at the same time…1 Corinthians 15:5-6

• After his suffering, he showed himself to these men and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God.” Acts 1:3

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

8. Jesus’ Ascension

a. In the days following His resurrection, Jesus was busy giving the disciples their final teachings and instructions. One day while He was speaking to them, Jesus, In his physical body, ascended into heaven.

• So then, after the Lord had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God. Mark 16:19 (NKJV)

• When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed them. While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven. Luke 24:50-51

• After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight. Acts 1:9

9. Jesus’ Abiding Intercession for Us

a. Jesus continues His work in heaven on behalf of every believer. He has not left us to fend for ourselves, but He is constantly making Intercession for us.

• Christ Jesus, who died – more than that, who was raised to life – is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. Romans 8:34

• For there is one God and one mediator between God, and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom of all men…1 Timothy 2:5

• Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to god through him, because he always lives to intercede for them. Hebrews 7:25

CONCLUSION

The apostle Paul said in Galatians 1:7, “There are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ”. The acid test of any system is how well it matches up with the Scriptures. A correct Christology is essential to good theology.

Once we have met the “Pearl of Great Price,” the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, there’s only one thing for us to do:

BOW OUR KNEE AND LET OUR TONGUES CONFESS THAT HE IS LORD!

-----------------------

WE BELIEVE in the Lord Jesus Christ, the second person of the triune Godhead, who was and is the eternal Son of God; that He became incarnate by the Holy Spirit and was born of the virgin, Mary.

WE BELIEVE in His sinless life, miraculous ministry, substitutionary atoning death, bodily resurrection, glorious ascension, and abiding intercession.
