1. If you have a favorite book of the Bible (it’s OK if you don’t...), what book is it? What makes it your favorite?
2. If you are familiar with the four Gospel accounts in the Bible (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John), is one of them your favorite?
What do you like about it?
3. 1 John 1:1-3 was written by the same author as the Gospel of John. How does what John says about himself in these verses give him credibility to speak about Jesus?
4. Read John 20:30,31. How would you summarize John’s purpose in writing his Gospel?
How would you explain what it means to “believe” in Jesus?
What does John say is the result of believing in Jesus?
5. Read John 6:47 & 10:10. What do these verses suggest about the “life” that is available by believing in Jesus?
What (if anything) do you find appealing about the promise of this kind of life?
6. Read John 1:1-5. What facts about “the Word” does John declare to be true?
John later makes it clear that “the Word” is Jesus. How do you respond to John’s declaration that these things are true about Jesus?
Read Hebrews 1:1-3. How does the view of Jesus presented here compare with that in John 1:1-5?
7. What ideas might be included in John’s assertion that “the light shines in the darkness” (v. 5)?
What encouragement do you find in knowing that “the darkness has not overcome the light”?
As your group prays, ask for God’s help in understanding and responding to the truths presented in John’s Gospel.
