CRIMINALIST

The New York City Police Department is seeking a qualified individual to fill the position of Criminalist, Level IV in the Police Crime Laboratory. The Criminalist, Level IV will perform casework in the area of forensic document examination and supervise, train, and evaluate the work of a group of Criminalists engaged in forensic document examination; ensure quality control standards are being met; conduct research into new procedures; monitor technical developments; and serve as a liaison with other city, state, and federal law enforcement agencies regarding the area of forensic document examination. Candidates must be proficient in the examination and comparison of handwriting, typewritten and other types of machine printing, and indented writing. Candidates should also be proficient in the operation of the Video Spectral Comparator and the Electrostatic Detection Apparatus, and be able to prepare photographic displays for court exhibits and testify as an expert witness in forensic document examination in Criminal Court. Candidates with at least one year of supervisory experience and certification by the American Board of Forensic Document Examiners are preferred.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college in criminalistics, forensic science, chemistry, biology, physics, molecular genetics, genetics, biochemistry, molecular biology, entomology, anthropology, ecology or a closely related scientific or engineering field, and four years of full time professional experience in criminalistics, analytical chemistry, or forensic science; or

2. Education and experience equivalent to “1” above.

An approved internship in criminalistics or forensic science, or eighteen master’s degree level credits in one of the above mentioned areas may be substituted for one year of experience. A master’s degree in one of the specialization areas described above may be substituted for two years of experience, and a doctorate may be substituted for three years of experience.

SALARY: $67,566.00 - $88,259.00. New York City residency is not required for this position.
