This lab describes how to use the TI84 to find some of the common descriptive statistics covered in Quarter 1.
Consider the following set of numbers from a sample of size n = 11.
{75, 49, 49, 98, 90, 71, 73, 87, 73, 46, 68}
Directions:
Entering Data
▪ Press the STAT key
▪ Press 1 for 1:EDIT (This will bring you to a groups of lists)
▪ Highlight List 1 “L1” by using the up arrow key▲
▪ Press CLEAR and then ENTER to clear any existing data. DO NOT PRESS DELETE. It will remove the list all together. If you do erase this list follow the directions at the end of this lab to recover the lost list.
▪ Now enter the data - pressing ENTER after each number.
▪ Return to the home screen by pressing 2nd followed by MODE
Finding the Descriptive Statistics
▪ Press the STAT key
▪ Scroll to the right ► to highlight CALC
▪ Press 1 for 1:1-Var Stats (“1 – Var Stats” will appear on the home screen)
▪ Now indicate you want statistics for List 1 by pressing 2nd followed by 1 for L1
(In other cases you may want statistics for another list such as List-2 = L2)
▪ Press ENTER
▪ Use the up ▲and down ▼arrow keys to view all the statistics.
Special Note: Notice that [pic]and [pic](the symbols for sample and population standard deviation respectively) are reported on the TI-84. The value for [pic] should ALWAYS be ignored. We are entering sample data and only the value for[pic]should be reported. The only time the value for [pic] should be considered is when we are entering all the population data (which is practically never the case).
Recovering a Lost List
Suppose we are trying to recover List 1 = L1
▪ Press the STAT key
▪ Press 1 for 1:EDIT (This will bring you to a groups of lists)
▪ Highlight List 2 “L2” by using the right arrow key ► followed by the up arrow key▲
▪ Press 2nd followed by DEL
▪ Now select L1 by pressing 2nd followed by 1 for L1
TASK: Enter the following data into List 2 “L2” and report the following descriptive statistics: sample mean, sample standard deviation, sample size, minimum value, 1st quartile, median, 2nd quartile, and finally the maximum.
Data Set {12.34, 25.25, 14.15, 56.21, 10.11, 3.51, 4.25, 13.04, 17.44, 50.04}
For the purpose of this lab, round answers to four decimal places where appropriate.
