Rank IHandbookDepartment of Curriculum and InstructionCollege of EducationEastern Kentucky University Rank I - Certification Non-Degree ProgramsRank I classification, the sixth-year program, requires the successful completion of a minimum of 30 graduate semester hours in an approved planned program in addition to the requirements for Rank II classification, or 60 total graduate semester hours including a master’s degree.EKU offers Rank I programs in the following areas:Elementary Education (P-5)Library Science (P-12)Middle Grades Education (5-9)Secondary Education (P-12, 5-12, or 8-12)Certification Extensions and Endorsements Certified teachers wishing to expand their area expertise may pursue certificate endorsements (additions to a base certificate) and certificate extensions (an additional base certificate).ExtensionsFor example, a certified secondary teacher may wish to extend certification to the middle grades. Or an elementary teacher may wish to extend certification to a middle school math, science, English, or social studies. Transcript evaluations are required to determine the courses needed to extend a certification. Contact information can also be found on the Department of Curriculum and Instruction webpage In how many credit hours may a graduate student enroll?When working full time, a graduate student may enroll in up to six graduate credit hours during fall and spring semesters and 12 graduate credit hours during the summer sessions. A maximum academic load of 12 hours is permissible during the regular fall and spring semesters for full time graduate students. Graduate assistants are permitted to carry a maximum course load of 12 hours and minimum of nine hours of graduate credit toward their program.What is the difference between degree and non-degree programs?A degree program leads to the completion of the Master’s Degree. They are more rigorous, requiring completion of a comprehensive exam or the development of an Action Research Project in addition to a minimum of 30 hours of coursework. Non-degree programs (Rank I) lead to completion of certification or rank change requirement as set by the Kentucky Education Professional Standards Board.
