This is the first written assignment for the course. It is meant to begin to engage you in the class and to see what you are learning to date. As with all reports, you will be expected to follow the following guidelines:

1. All work is to be typed in 10 or 12 pt format and double spaced.

2. Your name should be on all pages and the work should be titled in an appropriate way. For example, Homework #1, or the title of your essay, etc.

3. All pages should be stapled and NOT folded and on standard sized paper.

4. You are expected to write using good grammar and spelling. Your thoughts should be presented in full sentences and you are to group your thoughts into paragraphs.

5. You facts should be correct and you should reference all work that is not your own.

6. Any personal thoughts should be supported with examples and logical thinking.

As we progress through the semester, there might be need to add to this list of guidelines.

Assignment

For the first assignment, you are to write a 2-3 page paper on one of the following topics.

1. Describe Albert Einstein’s education as he was growing up. What do you find to be the most interesting aspects and what did you learn that we did not cover in class?

2. Summarize the problem of “Newton’s Bucket” and how Mach’s principle challenged Newtonian physics. Why do you think Mach’s Principle might have played a role in Einstein’s early work?

3. What role did Mileva Maric play in Einstein’s early years? Is there any evidence that she contributed to his work in relativity?

4. How was Einstein affected by the First World War? What was his involvement?
