Standard: SOL Standard WHI.9: The student will demonstrate knowledge of Western Europe during the Middle Ages from about 500 to 1000 A.D. in terms of its impact on Western Civilization.

SOL Standard WHI.12: The student will demonstrate knowledge of social, economic, and political changes and cultural achievements in the late medieval period.

Benchmark: Benchmark 4.3: The student understands the foundations of a new society in Western Christendom and the reorganization of political and social order in Europe following the breakup of the Western Roman Empire. (WHI.9)

A.     Explain the development of a European civilization that resulted from the classical heritage of Rome, Christian beliefs, and the customs of Germanic tribes.

B. Explain the development of the Merovingian and Carolingian states and assess their success at maintaining public order and local defense in Western Europe (Franks, Battle of Tours, Charlemagne).

C.     Assess the impact of migrations and invasions on the emergence of feudalism (Angles/Saxons to England, Magyars to Hungary, and Norse/Vikings to Russia, west Europe, North America, castles, disruption of trade).

E. Analyze how the preservation and revival of Greco-Roman culture and early Christian learning in monasteries, convents, and Charlemagnes royal court contributed to the emergence of European civilization.

F. Analyze the growth of papal power during this era (Pope anointed Charlemagne Holy Roman Emperor, 800 A.D., Church power was established in political life).

Benchmark 5.2: The student understands patterns of social, economic and political change in Western Europe from 1000 to 1500 A.D. (WHI.12)

F. Analyze the connection between population growth and increased agricultural production through technological innovation (three-field system, horse collar, mould board plow).

Title: The Western Tradition, Video 18: The Age of Charlemagne

Length of segment: 27 minutes

Overview: The video in one is large series covering world history. It is essentially a lecture with many good images and maps, but the professor’s accent is strong. It is most suitable for a higher level class. The Video covers the population growth in the Middle Ages due to new farming technology and techniques, the Carolingian Empire including Charlemagne’s achievements and the barbarian invasions of the 9th and 19th centuries.

Teacher Preparation: Teacher should preview the video to determine if it is appropriate for their students. Have the students complete the viewing guide as they watch.

Follow up: Have the students complete a writing reflection based on the statement given.

Recommended lesson length: 45 minutes

Statement: Charlemagne was a better reflection of the Roman Empire than the Dark Ages.
