BIBLICAL FINANCIAL PRINCIPLES
Prosperity - Definition (Proverbs 30:7-9)
1. God wants His people have enough to meet their needs
a. God met the needs of the Israelites when He brought them out of Egypt
i) He fed them - Exodus 16:13-35, Joshua 5:10-12
ii) He miraculously provided water when needed - Ex 17:1-7
iii) The clothing of the Israelites didn't wear out in the wilderness for 40 years - Deuteronomy 29:5, 8:4
iv) God provided supernaturally for needs of Elijah - 1 Kgs 17
b. Scriptures that declare God's will for meeting the needs of His people
i) 3 John 2
ii) Philippians 4:19 - a promise to those who support the spreading of the Gospel
c. God's plan for man to earn a living - work
i) God ordained that Adam work to care for Garden of Eden - Genesis 2:15-17
ii) After Adam sinned, the work was more difficult - Gen 3:17-19
iii) Jesus was crowned with a crown of thorns - His blood was given to remove the curse from the earth
iv) The curse will be removed when the sons of God are revealed - Romans 8:19-22
v) Scriptures that speak of a lazy person - Prov 24:30-34, 8:19, 26:13-16, 25:13,19, 10:26, 23:21, 19:15
vi) A person who won't provide for his family is worse than an unbeliever - 1 Timothy 5:8
vii) God's cure for laziness - no work; no eat - 2 Thess 3:10-12
2. God's plan for His blessings on your finances - giving - it's obedience, not luck
a. Get rich quick schemes lead to poverty (lottery) - Prov 21:5, 28:22
b. Luke 6:38 - give and it shall be given to you...
i) The first fruit (or pay) belongs to God - Lev 23:9-14, 1 Kgs 17:7-16
ii) Blessings come after obedience - 1 Kings 17:17-24
iii) Instructions about giving - 2 Cor 9:6-12, Proverbs 22:9
c. Obedience - God loves those who obey - Jn 14:15,21,23,24, 15:10-15
d. Giving is like sowing; it's costly and requires planning
e. Giving - don't regard your circumstances - Ecclessiastes 11:4
f. God's a giver
i) John 3:16, Ephesians 2:8, Romans 8:32
ii) 2 Corinthians 9:7 - God loves a cheerful giver
g. How much are we to give?
i) Malachi 3:7-11 - (verse 10 - 1/10)
ii) Lk 11:42, Mt 23:23 - Jesus said you should tithe of all your increase
iii) Tithe is part of covenant with God - Mal 3:10,11, Num 23:19
iv) To whom are we to give?
v) Storehouse - verse 10 - place where you are fed spiritually
vi) To poor and needy - Prov 14:31, 17:5, 14:21, 11:24-25, 22:22, 28:27, 19:17
vii) To those who ask of us - Matthew 5:42 (speaking of our dealings with our enemies)
h. Don't cancel (forfeit) your blessings by speaking against God's provision
i) Malachi 3:13-18
ii) Numbers 13 and 14 (tell the story) - they cancelled their promised inheritance by unbelief and complaining (key: 14:27, 28, 36, 37)
i. The wicked prosper without giving
i) Psalms 73 the psalmist says "My feet had almost slipped" (verse 1) when he saw the prosperity of the wicked
ii) The psalmist didn't understand the complete picture until he saw it in the light of eternity (verse 17)
j. God's blessings promised to the obedient - Deut 28:1-14, Isa 1:19
i) These blessings are given to the nation that obeys and follows God's rules
ii) When a nation prospers, the individual people also prosper
iii) The same is true, generally speaking, of the curses also (Deuteronomy 28:15-68)
iv) Psalms 14:1 "Fool has said, 'No God'"
v) Prov 19:10 - fool rule over princes (Prov 17:12, 19:3)
3. Truths concerning money
a. God isn't need motivated - Mt 6:7,8 (related scriptures: Jer 33:3, James 4:2,3)
b. Money is not evil - 1 Timothy 6:10, Luke 12:34
c. Money doesn't guarantee happiness - Romans 14:17-19
d. God wants you debt free - Romans 13:8 (don't put up security for another - Proverbs 6:1-5, 17:18, 11:15, 22:26,27)
e. Money can solve many of life's problems - Ecclessiastes 10:19
f. Poverty isn't godly - Psalms 50:10
4. Satan's plan to cause people to worship him
a. The Heavenly Father desires His people to worship Him - Jn 4:23,24 (also Psalms 139:17,18, 40:5)
b. Satan also desires people to worship him - Matthew 4:8-10
c. Satan desired (and desires) to be exalted like God - Is 14:12-14
d. A time is coming when Satan will use money to try to receive worship - Revelations 13:16,17
e. We're warned not to receive the mark of the beast on hand or forehead - Revelations 14:9-12
i) Don't fear accidentally taking this mark
ii) Give God your allegiance (forehead) and your activities hand)
5. How to prosper in this world
a. Make your plans - Proverbs 16:9
b. Commit your plans to the Lord - Proverbs 16:3
c. Plans lead to a profit - Proverbs 21:5
d. Make plans by seeking advice (counsel) - Proverbs 20:18, 24
i) There's safety in a multitude of counselors - Prov 11:14, 24:6
ii) Lips that speak knowledge are like a jewel - Proverbs 20:15
e. Listen to advice and accept instruction - Proverbs 19:20,21
f. Listen to instruction - Proverbs 16:20
i) Zeal without knowledge is not good - Proverbs 19:2
ii) If you reject instruction, will cost you - Prov 13:13,16,19
iii) Fools hate knowledge - Prov 1:22
g. Listen to people of integrity - Proverbs 12:5
h. Whatever you do, do it as well as you are able - Proverbs 22:29
i. Don't make partners of the lazy - Proverbs 10:26
j. Work hard - Proverbs 14:23
k. Know your business, for it's the means of increase - Prov 27:23-27
l. Walk in integrity - Proverbs 10:9
m. Honor the Lord with your wealth - Proverbs 3:9
n. Keep your priorities in proper order - James 4:13-16
i) Doing business and making money is not condemned
6. Giving can be a gift of the Holy Spirit - Romans 12:4-8
a. God blesses some people with business sense who are able to make large amounts of money
b. Preaching of the Gospel requires money
i) For rent or purchase of buildings
ii) For Bibles and other literature
iii) For living expenses of one who is sent
iv) Everything associated with God's work costs money. The list could be almost endless
7. Jesus says to use worldly wealth - Luke 16:1-9
a. Don't misunderstand this passage. This passage should be read with Matthew 6:19-21 and Mark 12:41-44
b. We can have only one master; either God or money, but not both
c. We can use money to send someone else who is able to go to preach the gospel - Romans 14:14,15
8. God will supply all your need - Philippians 4:10-19
a. We are to show our concern and love for those who are sent by supporting them financially - verse 10
b. Paul had decided to be content, regardless of his circumstances - verse 11 (see 1 Timothy 6:6-8)
c. Paul declares that Christ is the source of all his needs to proclaim the gospel - verse 13
d. The church in Philippi had sent help several times when Paul was in Thessalonica (a distance of about 110 km, which would require about 1 week to travel there and return) - verse 16
e. Paul says a gift given for preaching the gospel is being credited to one's account in Heaven - verse 17 (see Mt 6:20, Mk 12:41-44) God looks at percent more than the amount given
f. A gift given to preach the gospel is a sweet smelling fragrance to God - verse 18
i) Five things that small sweet to God:
1) Sacrifice - Genesis 8:20,21
2) Sacrifice of praise - Heb 13:15,16; Lu 14:12-14, Jn 12:7,8; Ps 103:1-5, Ps 34:1-3, Prov 11:24,25
3) Prayers - Revelations 5:8, 8:3,4
4) The spreading of the knowledge of Christ through the saints - 2 Corinthians 2:14,15
5) Gifts given for the spreading of the gospel - Phil 4:18
6) God's promise of provision (verse 19) is to those who participate in giving for the work of God
9. Vows
a. A vow (promise) can be made voluntarily if one chooses to do so
b. General guidelines - Ecclessiastes 5:4,5; Deuteronomy 23:21-23
i) Vows usually consist of "I will give x amount if God will prosper me in y (to be spoken by the one making the vow) area. Vows were common in Old Testament times, but aren't practiced very often today, but can be
c. If you borrow money, you promise (vow) to repay it - Ps 37:21, Prov 25:14
d. We have an example of a foolish vow - Judges 11 (especially verses 30,31,35)
i) We wonder what Jepthah was thinking when he made such a foolish vow
10. Living from the work of the gospel
a. Paul speaks of one's rights as an apostle, though this also applies to pastors, evangelists and all others who dedicate their lives to the spreading of the gospel - 1 Cor 9:1-23
b. Paul kept focused on his purpose - 1 Corinthians 10:31-33
c. Paul was willing to not receive offerings from churches so that no one could be able to make false accusations against him - 1 Cor 4:8-13
d. Paul also didn't use the gospel to become wealthy - 2 Cor 2:17
11. Final exhortations
a. Greed is idolatry - Ephesians 5:5, Colossians 3:5, 1 John 2:15
b. A man's wealth is left behind at death - Psalms 49:12-20
c. Key verses - Matthew 6:33, Psalms 37:4, desires of heart
