Date: Tuesday, January 30th, 2018

Time: 8:30 – 10:00 am (1.5 hours)

Location: ROOM 212

Need to Bring: PEN, PENCIL, TEXTBOOK

Format:

Part I – Multiple Choice/True & False 20 marks (½ each) Knowledge

Covering material from the entire course, you are to choose the most correct answer to answer the 40 questions. This section will be completed using a Scantron card.

Part II – Definitions 15 marks Thinking

Define (details and context) and state the significance (why it is important) of THREE terms covering the entire course. Each term is worth five marks.

Part III – Essay Response 25 marks Communication

Based on the essay topics, you must write a well written essay with a clear thesis using information learned throughout the semester. It must be a five paragraph essay with a minimum of 2 pieces of specific evidence for each argument. This mark is based on communication, so writing style and structure count.

Essay topics are outlined on the reverse.

Part V – Essay Outline 15 marks Application

Students are to outline their essay – topic sentences and evidence. This will be collected and marked during the exam.

PLEASE NOTE – THERE IS NO ANALYSIS OR FULL SENTENCES (OTHER THAN TOPIC SENTENCES) PERMITTED ON THE OUTLINE. IF THESE ARE PRESENT, THE OUTLINE MAY BE CONFISCATED, AND YOU WILL NOT HAVE ACCESS TO IT IN ORDER TO WRITE THE EXAM.

Part III – Essay Response (15 marks Evidence and Analysis, 10 marks Style and Structure)

Choose one of the following topics and in a well written essay with a clear thesis, support the statement chosen using information learned throughout the semester. For full marks, your essay must span the 20th century and focus on Canada. Use the five part model with a minimum of two pieces of evidence (including specific details) for each argumentative paragraph to support your position. Proofread your essay; style counts!

1. For most of the 20th Century, Canada has been significantly influenced by its neighbour, the United States.

2. The government’s policies towards cultural minorities throughout the 20th Century demonstrate that Canada has historically not been tolerant.

3. The development of technology in the 20th Century had a significant impact on Canadian society.

4. Throughout the 20th Century, women’s roles in society underwent significant changes socially, politically, and economically.

5. Twentieth century Canada has been profoundly shaped by the conflict between the French and English.
