Art Research Assignment - Anderson School District Five

Art I Research Assignment

Project Requirements

Due Date: Artwork/Sketchbook: __________________, 2013

The Art Research Project has four basic requirements:

1. A PowerPoint (or Prezi) 14 SLIDE MINIMUM

2. A minimum of 8 complete pages of sketchbook preparation

3. An original work of art

4. Presentation of the PowerPoint and artwork

Artwork

Each student is responsible for creating 1 artwork reflecting his/her artist/movement choice and is to be completed primarily on his/her own time. For example, a student might choose Wassily Kandinsky/Expressionism. Kandinsky was involved in the Expressionist movement and created artwork reflecting the movement. Each student will choose an actual object as subject matter to be approved by the teacher. For example: pencil sharpener, bird, musical instrument etc. This object needs to be an actual object in the student’s possession, instead of a picture (no sunsets, far-away locations, celebrities, etc.), and will be the subject matter (focal point) for your composition. The composition will be focused on the object chosen by the student. The emphasis of your piece is to reflect the artists’ style and technique.

The piece is to of quality, complete, and firmly based on an in-depth study of the artist/movement.

Size requirements: Canvas—no smaller than 11 x 14 Paper—no smaller than 12 x 18

Any 3-dimensional product will be discussed on a case by case basis.

Sketchbook

Each student will be required to turn in at least 8 complete (notated and dated) pages of sketchbook work (for your composition) that shows evidence of the process. These pages will include media (color/value) studies, thumbnail compositions, research, brainstorming, experimentation, journal reflections, notes, etc...

Power Point Presentation

Each student will be required to do an 8-10 minute Power Point presentation on their about their chosen artist, movement and composition reflective of and based upon their research. (see page 2 for rubric of requirements).

In addition to the required information included in the actual PowerPoint, students will need to have prepared an additional “interesting fact” to verbally present along with each slide during the PowerPoint presentation.

These “interesting facts” should NOT appear in the actual PowerPoint itself, but instead should be given verbally by the student during the presentation. Each “interesting fact” should relate to the slide currently being shown, and should somehow enhance the presentation. These may be written on notecards for use during the presentation.

The Power Point will be due at the beginning of class two class meetings after the second class trip to the computer lab. Dates will be posted on the board in the classroom.

The presentation should show that the student has mastered the information. Presentations should not be read directly from the PowerPoint, but should instead be given in a way that respects the audience. Students should practice giving the presentation ahead of time.

There will be two in-class work sessions for the Art History Research Project original artwork.

The first will be shortly after the PowerPoint is due, and will focus on sketchbook work. The second will be approximately two weeks before the artwork is due, and will be the only opportunity for students to receive teacher input regarding the final artwork. Students will be required to show evidence of work completed for homework grades on these two days.

All materials needed for completion of the original artwork are the responsibility of the student to provide.

NO ART MATERIALS WILL BE PROVIDED BY THE SCHOOL FOR THIS PROJECT.
