Objectives 10.1

Importance of computers in business – is to process a large quantity of information with enhanced speed, ease, accuracy and at a reduced cost! Computers allow companies to reduce staff, improve profit margins, enhance inventory control and better understand customer sales patterns. There are basically two types of computers, mainframe of microcomputer. These have basic components called system unit, keyboard, printer and monitor.

Terms 10.1

• Mainframe – is a powerful computer used by hundreds of people at the same time.

• Microcomputer – is a personal computer.

• Disk drive – is used to store and read information.

• CD-ROM – enhances computer by providing high resolution graphics, animation, video and digital sound.

• Software – controls the functioning of the hardware and directs its operation.

Objectives 10.2

The six most popular types of software programs – are word processing, database, spreadsheet, desktop publishing, graphics and design and communications.

Terms 10.2

• Word processing programs – are used to create text documents (letters).

• Database programs – are used to collect related data which can be sorted, searched through and printed as needed (files).

• Spreadsheet programs – are used to organize, calculate and analyze numerical data such as charts and graphs.

• Desktop publishing programs – are used to design and produce professional printed material such as newsletters or brochures.

• Graphics and design programs – are used to produce drawings and designs such as illustrations, logos and letterheads.

• Communications programs – are used to establish communication between your computer and other computers (web connection, fax, e-mail).

Objectives 10.3

Today three types of computers are impacting the marketing world and they are point of sale, online services and E-mail.

Terms 10.3

• Point of sale systems – use a variety of accessories to process sales and control inventory as the sale occurs.

• Online services – allow people to access services and information such as commercial on line services or the internet.

• E-mail – is now one of the most popular forms of communication.
