Living and Loving in the Last DaysLiving in the World - Part IIBACKGROUND:In the last days: RECOGNIZE THAT _______________________________REALIZE THAT _________________________________REMAIN ________________________________________WEEK SEVEN QUESTIONS: I John 3:1-10 - Living as Children of God As we move into chapter 2, we revisit the topic of sin. This time with more clarity on how it fits in the life of a believer. BIBLE STUDY TIP: Paraphrasing is an important skill that can be used in Bible study to really get to the meaning of a passage. This skill is typically taught in school but if you need a quick refresher here is the gist. The goal is to take the words of a verse/passage and put them into your own words. You should try to figure out different words and even change the sentence structure in order to create another way of making the point. Begin by reading the verse. Then, look away from the verse and write down what you remember. The goal is not to memorize what you read but to internalize the meaning and then write it down in a way that helps you understand it. Believe it or not, we all have a plethora of words in our toolkit to replace one word with another, and the skill is one that we can all do.Your paraphrase can be shorter than the original but not too short. The goal is to keep the meaning the same. Here is an example: Original - Romans 8:1 - There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. Paraphrase: For those who have put their faith in Jesus, feeling shame is a thing of the past. Add paraphrasing to your toolkit from time to time. It can make the verse(s) much more relatable. Read chapter 2: 28-29 then chapter 3:1. These three verses actually flow together. How do we know that God loves us according to verse 1? Why don’t the people of the world recognize us as God’s children? What does this simple point tell us about knowing God? According to verse 2 God has not shown us something yet but in a way we do know. What is John suggesting in this verse? Paraphrase the ideas to help you determine the meaning a bit. Add verse 3 to your understanding of verse 2. What is the result of living in “eager expectation?”Verses 4-6 bring us back to the topic of sin. List all of the truths laid out by John in the verse. Why do you think that he is coming back to the topic of sin? Is there any new information here? In verse 7, what does “doing right” show? In verse 8, what does the person who “keep[s] on sinning” show? Read John 8:43-44 - How does this verse shed some light on verse 7? Verse 9 ties all of these verses together. (vs. 1-8) What does John conclude here? Try paraphrasing his point here. Verse 10 wraps up this section with a final “so now” statement. What does he mean here for us as believers? If you have time, begin a study of Psalms 36-40. ( You could work on this for the next few weeks as a “side study”). Throughout the verses you will find many references to sin in the life of the believer and the unbeliever. As you read through, make a list of the points that David makes about sin in his life. When he refers to the “wicked”, he is referring to the man who is not seeking God, essentially the unbeliever. What connections can you make to David’s writing and the words of John? ................
