General Chinese 5

Part 1 Teaching Content

General Chinese 5 is designed for MBBS students who master the usage of about 950 basic Chinese words after learning Chinese for 516 hours, which is scheduled in the fifth semester with 4 hours per week.

In this course, students will learn usage of about 150 basic Chinese words and writing of corresponding Chinese characters; and usage of about 10 basic Chinese grammar points. Trainings of Chinese listening, speaking, reading and writing skills are emphasized in this course. Listening training focuses on dialogues and short passages with less than 400 characters; speaking training focuses on conversations and short narrations with relatively fast speed and greater fluency; reading training focuses on passages with about 400 characters and with 5% unknown words; writing training focuses on short passages or practical writing, such as letter, with about 400 characters.

Part 2 Teaching Object

General Chinese 5 reaches the partial requirements of elementary level 3 of Syllabus for Chinese language of International Students of Higher Education (Long term) published by Hanban:

Listening: can understand teachers’ lecture in Mandarin Chinese with normal speed; can understand conversations in familiar contexts; can understand speaker’s main ideas and purposes; can understand Chinese expression with the speed of 140 characters / min.

Speaking: can follow or give a talk on a familiar topic or keep up a conversation on a fairly wide range of topics; can express opinions on abstract matters; the percentage of incorrect sentences is less than 30%.

Reading: can understand 400-word-dialogues or passages that have less than 15% unknown words with a dictionary and can summarize the main ideas; can understand the main meaning of 400-word-dialogues or passages that have less than 10% unknown words without a dictionary; can read Chinese with the speed of about 95 characters / min.

Writing: can write understandable practical writings, such as notes or letters.

Students will master about 1100 basic vocabularies, 100 basic grammar points after learning General Chinese 5, whose Chinese language skills can partly meet the communication need for their social life and study life.
