Treasurer’s report was read by Carol Barthel for Al.

Motion made to approve by Pat Jeukens and motion seconded by Dave Hemmer -   Motion approved.

As of June 12, 2009 ALL vouchers MUST have receipts attached. If no receipt is available a written explanation must be submitted.

Lee Poirier made motion to approve 911 Volunteer appreciation by Gary Greb. The amount spent was $86.96 this included bags for the cell phones. Several people were included. Pat seconded. Motion approved.

Councils need to provide Chapter with Budget for projects for year.

Al, informed us that Metro Council has money in account (Iowa Flood- $1,200.00, and Military Family Relief $1,580.00).  This money needs to be disbursed before August 15, 2009.  Report back to Chapter.

Reports were presented by committee chairs.

Awards - Vacant need a volunteer.

Calendar - Jan explained the money ($7558.00) in the calendar account above the calendar expenses..  This was perpetual reserve fund money that was moved from the General account back in 1997-1998 to cover calendar expenses to make sure we had enough money to pay for the Four Scholarships, printing, pay back to councils.  It was in an account that paid interest so the amount has grown over the years. Not sure of original amount.

Ralph made a motion to approval to order 1500 Calendars with the money to be used for: Four- $1,000.00 scholarships, $5.00 to councils for each calendar sold. Money over this amount with be divided among the Councils. In the event of a tie on the scholarship a flip of a coin will determine the winner. Dave seconded.

Motion approved.

 Calendar Committee Report

Second Quarter 2009

The second Third drawing was held and winners are being notified as to their winnings.

I am in the process of seeking bids for the calendar printing.

While we limit the sales to 1800 calendars we have not sold near that many.  In 2009 we sold 1183.  The cost for the calendars printing was about 3400 dollars.

In seeking bids, I have found that the vertical perforations between the three stubs are very expensive.  As we wish to have the three stubs returned in one piece, should we consider eliminating the vertical perforation???

Also do we wish to continue printing 1800 calendars?

I have received a quote for 1500 without the vertical perforation for $1,900.00.

It has been suggested that in the event of a tie between applicants for the 4 scholarships that we should allow for a fifth scholarship.

As that is not now a part of the program we need to have board action on how to address this question.

It is my opinion that in the event of a tie, the committee should flip a coin to make the decision.

We simply do not have the funds to provide for a fifth scholarship.

Respectfully submitted,

Roger Hanson,

Co-chairman

PIONEER BUSINESS

On April 25, 2009 at the conclusion of the Scholarship Calendar drawing

It was brought up that executive board had not approved the Scholarship Calendar Sale project for the 2010 year.

Because there were many members of the executive board present at the drawing it was decided to handle that approval matter immediately.

Kathy Hanson made a motion to approve the MN Chapter 18 Qwest Pioneer project “Caring and Sharing Calendar” which raises funds for scholarships.

Sally Bolster seconded the motion.

Discussion about how many scholarship to award and how many calendars to print was held but no decision was made at this time.  Those issues can be discussed and decided at the June 2009 Chapter Executive Board meeting.

A Vote on the motion was called by Harry Osborn and all present voted yes to approve the calendar sale project for 2010.

Those present and voting:

Harry Osborn  Dave Hemmer  Sally Bolster

Cell phones for seniors

2nd quarter report

20 cell phones given to Anoka County.

25 cell phones given to the City of Bloomington

Received 5 letter size boxes of donated cell phones

from the City of Bloomington

65 cell phones taken in at St. Cloud.

30 cell phones given out at St. Cloud

57 cell phones given to White Bear lake

150 cell phones donated and received from White Bear Lake

Purchased appreciation lunch for 15 White Bear Lake volunteers on Saturday June 6th and also for 3 emergency dispatch workers who allow us to use their facility to distribute and hold the cell phone seminars.

The White Bear Lake Fire Department also showed up to thank us for doing the project in their community and after further discussion, they want to incorporate the Regions Pioneer’s ICE (in case of emergency) project into their volunteer groups.  They will input the emergency contact numbers for the seniors in White Bear Lake that already have their own cell phones, as well as for the seniors who have 911 only cell phones.  The sticker on the back of the cell phones will advise them that the phone is for 911 only, but they really like the idea of having the numbers right there instead of having to look for them in an emergency.  They intend to incorporate the project in all the St Paul Fire Departments after they get it established in White Bear Lake.  They also will have their fire stations collect cell phones for us.

A church group in Edina, MN has their first 911 cell phone seminar planned for July 19th at Hwy 100 & cross-town.  They will be a new cell phone drop off location for us.  They are also going to publicize the event in their church newsletter.

Cell phone distribution is down in all areas in large part because a lot of seniors are already getting their own services...

PALS REPORT FOR JUNE 12, 2009 CHAPTER MEETING

I was hoping to have the hours from the last meeting to now but that report didn’t

work.  I called Barb Palmer in Arizona and she also had been having the same

problem.  So she will contact Trish and let me know.  So from Jan 1, 2009 till

June 11, 2009 we have 21,817 hours.   Please send me your hours as I know people are doing so much more than I’m getting.  I think when the Chapter gives money to someone for a project, hours need to be turned in for that project.  So many times money has been approved for a project and there are never any hours   reported.

Chapter Board, Council Officers, and Pioneer members may post meetings, events, projects,

or other items on the Chapter Web Site by contacting Dave Hemmer.

Overall web site hits are showing a level trend

Qwest benefits show the highest gain and this is because we sent out the Go Green Letter with

no web location to update personal information.  People were searching for a way to submit

their information electronically.

I think we can get a boost in web site use if we all promote its use at our various meetings

and projects. And keep the web site in everyone's mind by including the web

address in all our emails and correspondence.

Keep lots of local and current information posted on the web.

Remember the preferred URL to list on your emails, letterhead, business cards, & flyers is minnesota

ARROWHEAD COUNCIL – QWEST PIONEERS

Committees:

Hug-a-bears: Char Reno, Nancy Eilefson, Jan Wangen & Marilyn Johnson

Twice a month Char and Nancy come in and cut out the patterns of the bears, then they give them to Jan or Marilyn to sew faces on, next the labels are added, they are sewed together, stuffed, butts sewed shut and ribbons added. Now they are ready for donations.

Luncheon: Don Fennesy, Bill Carlson, John Warren, Barb Cane, Char Reno, Nancy Eielson &

JoAnn Cooper

The guys are great to come in and serve which usually means they

have to cook also, such as grilled cheese sandwiches – or our last

event which was a breakfast consisting of French toast, sausage

links and orange juice. The ladies do the shopping, will help with

the cooking when needed, collect the money and do clean up. A

good team!

Spirit of Service Ride:

JoAnn Cooper – our team will be put together within the next week.

This will be our second annual motorcycle ride. Saturday, July

11th, in Carlton MN. Registration will take place at the Third Base

Bar at 10:00, departing at 11.

We will travel secondary roads, stopping at several locations to

participate in a poker run. We are still gathering donations for

prizes. John Stannoch donated a pair of Twins tickets, and I was

able to get a hotel stay at the Holiday Inn Metro dome to along

with them.

Our informational flyer and registration form along with the

waiver will be posted on the Pioneer website, if anyone is

interested in joining us.

I will also post the raffles once we have them all in place in case

any members would like to purchase tickets. Some of the prizes

will be designated for the motorcyclist alone – but we hope to have

many donations.

We would be happy to take cash donations from other councils =)

The money is all going to MACV, Minnesota Assistance Council

For Veterans – they are building a home in Duluth to

Accommodate several veterans in need.

Filling Backpacks:

This is something we have just been approached to take part in,

Qwest Communications have offered to provide the backpacks.

We would purchase the items needed. In the Duluth area, the

school in need is a High School, so we are anxious to hear more

about the number needed and what items we would be purchasing.

Report from Harley Forsythe Life Member Club

Second Quarter - 2009

The Life Members enjoyed their luncheon meeting at Little Falls on the 14th of April.  There were over 40 in attendance. We have a good group of Life Members in Little Falls but seem to be unable to get them to participate in the meetings or activities we present in St Cloud.

The Central Council Spring Fling was held the end of April and most of those attending were Life Members.

August 11 is scheduled for our Picnic at Riverside Park in St Cloud.  We had a chicken dinner with all the trimmings and anticipate a good turn-out for the picnic.

Hiawathaland

Hiawathaland Council Report, June 12th, 2009

The Hiawathaland Council meeting was held on March 25th, 2009.

The discrepancy between charitable and non-charitable spending was discussed. It was determined that we simply have to donate more to make the 65% charitable goal.

Brian Beckstrand from Austin is our new Historical chairman. He is taking over the bulk of the duties related to the Telephone Museum at the Mower County Fairgrounds. Brian reported that the water problems that were experienced in the past appear to be fixed and that the new siding on the building is complete. Also, all new items need to be logged at the office before going into the building so there will be a record of what is in there.

The new guidelines for postage and printing were also discussed. The Council will take care of folding and labels for the newsletter from now on.

Fundraising, co-chaired by Pat Levison and Cheryl Adams, has completed an inventory on all merchandise and will be going to market this summer to replenish the stock.

The Annual Members Picnic will be held at Medford Park on August 8th.

The Membership Luncheon may have to move to a new location this year due to a large rental fee the Senior Center has decided to charge.  Options include the VFW Club, the Elks Club, and the Eagles Club.

Pat Sable and Diane Rueb have continued Operation Nice by mailing boxes to our soldier in Iraq once a month. We will be getting a new soldier soon, probably a Minnesota Reservist this time.

It was decided that we will ask Janet and Eddie Lozon to become co-chairs of the Literacy project and to send letters to schools promoting the Pioneer scholarship.

Donations were made to the following organizations:

MS Tram Ride - $320.00

North Dakota Pioneers to help out with flooding - $200.00

Candy for the beeping egg hunt - $50.00

Memorial Park Bench in Pine Island - $100.00 authorized for repairs.
