What is the CIM?

The Center for Information Management (CIM) is a computer lab/multimedia classroom located in 112 King Library. It is designed to enable Miami’s faculty, staff, and students to explore cutting edge information technologies through self-directed learning, small workshops, or guest lectures and training by librarians. The CIM is able to accommodate individual work as well as group problem solving interaction.

What Can I Do There?

The CIM features a mix of Windows PCs and Macintosh computers. In the CIM you can:

• Digitize/edit slides, documents, and large-format images

• Digitize/edit audio recordings and videotapes

• Burn and duplicate CD-ROMs and DVDs

• Work with statistical and geographical datasets

A more detailed discussion of these services appears below.

Dataset Analysis

Students and faculty can analyze and manipulate datasets, including those available from the Libraries’ Electronic Data Center () and use SASS/SPSS software in the CIM.

Geographic Information Systems & Satellite Imaging

CIM provides sophisticated GIS software on high-end computer workstations. Students can also view and use satellite images of Ohio made available through the OhioView project, a collaboration between Miami University, OhioLINK, NASA, and the US Geological Service. For more information on GIS, see the following handout in this packet.

Digitizing and Editing Images

Equipment in the CIM includes a large format scanner for maps and blueprints, two slide scanners, and numerous flatbed scanners. Several software packages in the CIM can be used to edit images, save documents in Adobe Acrobat format, or convert text documents into Microsoft Word format via OCR (Optical Character Recognition). Several digital cameras are also available for check-out.

Digitizing and Editing Video

CIM houses machines that can record and edit from analog or digital videotapes. Digital video cameras are for checkout at the King Library Circulation Desk.

CD-ROM/DVD Burning and Duplication

All computers in CIM can burn files to CD-ROMs and DVDs. These storage media can hold large quantities of information, including audio/video files, or be distributed to potential employers. CIM also has a duplicator that can produce up to 100 copies of a CD or DVD at one time. CD-ROM and DVD discs may be purchased from the Circulation Desk in King Library.

General Use Policies

• Use is limited to Miami University faculty, students, and staff.

• A librarian must provide an orientation for faculty members wishing to schedule classes for the CIM.

• General help is available from a full time staff person and from student employees. For individual assistance, please contact Lisa Santucci (santucle@lib.muohio.edu; 529-1747) ahead of time, so that someone with expertise in your area of interest can be scheduled to work with you.

• Machines cannot be reserved for personal use—however, a CIM staff member can check to see if a particular machine is in use.

• A librarian can demonstrate equipment and software in the CIM for your class and provide hands-on assistance—just contact the librarian assigned to your department (see for the name and contact information of your librarian).

• No food, drink, or smokeless tobacco is permitted.
