Welcome Students and Families. I am pleased that you will be joining me in Computer Applications I. This packet provides important information for you.

Course Content. On the reverse of this sheet is the course blueprint from our N.C. Course of Study. All lesson plans, class activities and tests are built from this material and the VoCats Test Bank provided by NCDPI. All students in this course will take a state End of Course Test called VoCats during the last month of school to determine the student’s level of achievement. This exam covers the entire year. The test will count as the final exam for this course (25% of the total grade). In January (October for 1st semester block classes) there will be a teacher-made exam covering first semester material. Students needing extra keyboarding practice are asked to search for ‘free keyboarding software’ through the Internet, and use that at home. Students should be able to key at about 35 wpm.

Procedures. Students are expected to abide by all WSFCS and West Forsyth Rules/Procedures and the attached Business Lab Rules/Procedures. Students will need a 1-inch three-ring binder for a class notebook or must have a designated section in their regular notebook. A flash drive will be handy if you must carry work from school to home, but not mandatory for this class. We are using Windows XP and Office 2003. We cannot move to Vista until county-wide software is adapted for Vista.

Attendance, Tardy and Makeup. All WSFCS and West Forsyth attendance and tardy policies apply in this course. Makeup work can be scheduled before or after school on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 8:15 a.m. until 8:40 a.m. or 3:40 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. Please make an appointment for makeup within one week of absence. (Mondays are reserved for faculty meetings.)

Grading. Progress Reports will be available to parents on the following dates: September 5, October 6, November 17, December 8, February 9, March 2, April 20, and May 11. Report cards will be given to students at the end of each quarter. Grades are calculated as follows:

• Quizzes and Daily Work/Performance Exercises – 50 – 100 points

• Tests – Percentage of correct answers out of 100 points (for example, 8 correct questions out of 10 scores 80 out of 100 points).

• Projects – 100 - 200 points

Parent/Guardian Appointments. Please call the Guidance Office, 712-4403, or email me to make an appointment about your student’s progress in this class.
