Web Page Work Sample

At this work station you will be creating a simple web page for a Clown College using Microsoft FrontPage.

Before you start the task you will first learn about a career as a Webmaster.

Webmasters design and maintain web sites for various businesses and corporations.

Webmaster duties include:

• Create web sites using Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML)

• Provide maintenance for web sites

• Develop customer interfaces for the Web

• Design and redesign company home pages

• Develop a consistent look and feel to company web sites

• Link and update documents to the web site

• Develop search engines for company use

Most webmasters work in offices. They may work alone or as a member of a team.

Physically a webmaster must be able to see and hear well, either naturally or with correction and be able to sit in front of a computer for long periods of time.

A Bachelor's Degree is suggested. A webmaster can expect to earn $25,000 in their first year. That salary can go up to $54,000 after a few years of experience.

If you are interested in being a webmaster you should prefer:

• Activities that are technical in nature

• Working with customers to determine their specific requirements for web-sites

Suggested high school subjects:

• Computer science

• Computer graphics design

• Mathematics

• English

• Graphic arts

Activities to improve skills:

• Take courses in web design and computer programming

• Explore the world wide web for interesting web sites

• Design and set up your own personal web site

• Volunteer or work for a computer company

(Observation Point #1)

Creating the Index Page

Your first task will be to create your index or home page!

First you will set some characteristics for this page.

1. Go to File in the menu bar and select Properties.

2. In the rectangular box labeled "Title:" type "Clown College" without the quotation marks. Click OK.

3. Click on File in the menu and select SAVE AS. Under Save in: Navigate to the desktop by clicking the desk top icon on the left side of the window.

4. Next, double click on the Web Page Work Sample folder. Click on Save.

5. Then, call your evaluator.

Modify the Appearance of the Text

The program you are using, Microsoft FrontPage, works like any standard word processing program when it comes to editing the appearance of text. You will simply highlight the text and apply the change you desire from the format tool bar.

1. On your blank index page, type: Clown College

2. Highlight Clown College by clicking and dragging or double clicking.

3. Next, select format, then style, then Heading 1 (h1) under the Style drop down List.

4. Select a color of your choice from the Font Color tool.

5. Click after Clown College and press the Enter key.

6. Type the following address and telephone number (press Enter after each row):

Springfield, USA

1-800-555-CLOWN

7. Call your evaluator.

Modify the Alignment of the Text

1. Next, highlight Clown College, the address and telephone number.

2. Select the center alignment icon from the tool bar.

3. Click the mouse just after the telephone number. Press the Enter key.

4. Click on Insert, then Horizontal Line to add a line across the page.

5. Press the Enter key.

6. Save the document.

7. Call your evaluator.

Change the Background Color

A colored background can make your page inviting. It's easy to change this.

1. Select Format then Background.

2. Under Colors, click on the Background rectangular box ▼, and choose a color that is visually pleasing.

3. Click on OK.

4. Be sure to save your document again. You can Never save too often!

5. Call your evaluator.

Add a Graphic and More Text

When creating a web page, images or graphics are always kept in one location, an image file.

1. Click after the telephone number and press the Enter key.

2. Click on Insert.

3. Click on Picture then From Web Page File.

4. Select the graphic file named animated3.gif. Click on Insert.

5. Press Enter after the graphic and type the college web address: .

6. Call your evaluator.

Add a Table

1. Click below the horizontal rule.

2. Click on Table in the toolbar then Insert ► Table.

3. Under Size, the # of Rows and Columns should already be set at 2, if not change to 2.

4. Click OK. A table will appear on the page.

5. The cursor will be in the first cell. Type Our Mission. Use the tab key to move to the next cell. Type Our Staff. Tab to next cell and type Our Schedule. Tab to next cell and type For More Information.

6. You can format the data in the table as you would any other text. Highlight the text first. Then apply fonts, size, style, color, and alignment attributes. You may also change the font, styles, etc. of the Clown College heading. Try to be consistent with your style.

7. Save your document.

8. Call your evaluator.

Add a Background Graphic

Colored backgrounds load quickly and are attractive on web pages. But you may want to use a background image for a more professional look to your site. These images can serve as a unifying thread throughout all of your pages. They are very easy to add to your document!

1. Click on Format then Background.

2. Under Formatting, click in the box beside Background Picture and Watermark.

3. Next, click on Browse and then background2.gif.

4. Click Open then OK. Wow – Now you have a graphic as your background!

5. Save your work.

6. Call your evaluator.

Create a New Page – Our Mission

1. Create a new file by selecting File, New … Page.

2. Next, select Blank Page on the right side of the screen.

3. Click on File, Properties.

4. In the rectangular box labeled “Title:” type Our Mission. Click OK.

5. Next, click on File in the menu then SAVE AS. Click Save.

6. Remove the “Clown Mission” page from the pocket of the binder.

7. Type the mission.

8. Change font, colors, background, etc., as you like. Insert at least one graphic from the images folder.

9. Next, insert the image titled “home” from the images folder in the Web Work Sample desktop folder.

10. Save your work.

11. Call your evaluator.

Create Return to Home Page Link

You will now link the home image to your index page. Click on the Return to Home image on the mission page.

1. Click on Insert then Hyperlink.

2. Click on Existing File or Web Page (top left of window).

3. Click on index.htm then OK.

4. Save your work.

5. Call your evaluator.

Create a New Page – Our Staff

1. Create a new file by selecting File, New … Blank Page.

2. Next, click on File, Properties.

3. In the rectangular box labeled “Title:” type Our Staff. Click OK.

4. Next, click on File in the menu then SAVE AS. Click Save.

5. Next, you will need to create a table for the following clowns. Note: You will need to select the rows and columns for this table. If you forget how to make a table, refer back to page 8.

6. Change the background color, fonts, add image(s), etc. as you like. Remember to make your page visually pleasing and consistent in style.

7. Insert home image to page and hyperlink to index page.

8. Save your work.

Create a New Page – Our Schedule

1. Now create another new page titled Our Schedule following the instructions on the previous page.

2. Remove the “Our Schedule” page from the front pocket of the binder.

3. Type this information. Change font, background, add image, etc.

4. Add home image to page and hyperlink to index page.

5. Save your work.

6. Call your evaluator.

Complete Hyperlinks on Index Page

1. Return to the index page by clicking on the index tab at the top of the screen.

2. Highlight Our Mission

3. Click on Insert in the toolbar then Hyperlink.

4. Click on the Our Mission file. The path name will be displayed in the "Link to.." window. Click on OK to close the Link to window.

5. Repeat steps 2 – 4 to complete hyperlinks for Our Staff and Our Schedule. Be sure to click on the correct file when making your hyperlink.

6. Save your work.

7. Next, highlight For More Information.

8. Click on Insert in the toolbar then Hyperlink.

9. Click on E-mail address at the bottom left of the window.

10. Under E-mail address: type the address clownsrus@ Click OK.

11. Save your work.

12. Click on the Preview in Browser under the FILE icon in the tool bar and try your links.
