Introduction: How much can you make from taking surveys?

Taking online surveys is a very simple way to earn hundreds of dollars a month. In my very first three weeks with a little effort I earned $248.06 (and that was while trying out a variety of different companies not sure about which was best). If you signed up for every company and took surveys nearly every day of the month you could probably hit a thousand dollars a month, but that is the top range I would expect someone to be able to reach for taking surveys online (without including referrals).

So why bother taking surveys if the max is around $1,000 per month?

Because it is so easy to take surveys and earn some extra cash.

I'm not going to lie and tell you that taking surveys will allow you to quit your day job, because it's not really possible to do that. If you're looking for strategies that can help you quit your day job be sure to check out my other blog (I've been self employed growing several online businesses since October 2009).

Bottom line: If you'd like to pay your car payment and cell phone bill that's totally doable with only surveys.

If that sounds good to you keep on reading as I'll be sharing the top five best paying survey companies I've found along with several other tips to maximize the earnings you make from surveys.

What to do before you sign up for survey companies

There a couple of simple tasks that you should complete before you go sign up for survey companies. First: Create a second email address to exclusively use for surveys If you don't do this you'll end up with thousands of emails clogging up your inbox. Here's what I do... I use chris@ as my survey taking email ? don't email me there or I won't see it. Use this page to reach out to me if you have questions. Then I set up a Gmail filter for every email to chris@ to "Skip the Inbox (Archive)" and automatically Apply the label that I created called "Surveys." Finally I check the box to "Never send it to spam" Don't have a second email address? Keep reading, I'll get to that...

Here's a screenshot of how my filter is set up so that I never get survey emails in my main inbox:

Now every single email I receive from the survey companies I sign up with goes straight to my "Surveys" tab and never reaches my main inbox. Use Gmail but don't have (or want) to get a second email address? Here's a quick tip: If your email address was johndoe@ then you could sign up for survey companies using the email address johndoe+surveys@ and those emails would still get to you. Then you can set up a filter so that every email sent to johndoe+surveys@ gets sent to your "Surveys" tab and skips your inbox using the same rules in the screenshot I posted above. The + symbol simply needs to come at the end of your Gmail address. I prefer using a second email though.

Here is another huge time saving tool: RoboForm is a password management program that works on your computer and smart phone. I use RoboForm to keep track of all my survey logins, as well as, make it easy to sign up for new companies with the click of the identity button (it pre-fills all of the questions for me and allows me to provide custom answers to questions).

Download the free trial of RoboForm here The free trial provides access to most of the main features of the pro version and I used the free version for several months before I upgraded. You can also use built in browser settings to prefill this information for you as well.
