Connecting Literature

Final Project – Pre IB/AP English

100 points

For our final project of the year, we will find ways to connect the literary masterpieces we have read this year. This project is designed with maximum flexibility to allow you to use your imaginations! Have fun. Be creative. Be thought-provoking.

You will:

1) Decide whether you want to work alone on this or with a partner. You may choose to work individually or with one other person. You must notify me of your intentions no later than: May 4 or May 5

2) Pick three of the four pieces of literature that we have read this year (OMM may be included, but I didn’t count it among the “four” since I wasn’t here to teach it)

3) Examine the books and plays that you have chosen, looking for connections. How are these pieces of literature connected thematically? In terms of characters? Plot? Setting? Time period? Other connections I haven’t thought of?

4) Choose one significant way in which the works of literature you have chosen are connected. Focus in on that one connection.

5) Find some way to illustrate that connection. Be imaginative. Some suggestions?

* Create a photo album (complete with captions) of pictures that illustrate the connection you have made.

* Do a slide show – complete with captions -- (using Power Point or a traditional slide projector) illustrating the connection.

* Collect music that illustrates the connection you have made. Burn a CD or record the music on a tape. Include a pamphlet with lyrics and a written or recorded essay explaining how the lyrics and music make the connection.

* Collect art work that illustrates the connection you have made. Present the artwork in photo form or on a Power Point slide show (complete with captions).

* Do original artwork that illustrates the connection you have made. Make sure that your artwork is captioned so that we understand the connection.

* Do a dramatic monologue, dialogue, or scene that connects the literature you have chosen. Make sure to include all three pieces of literature.

* Do a “dialogue” collage using passages from all three pieces of literature to illustrate the connection you have made. Make sure to choose carefully and include an essay explaining your connection.

* Find some way to connect work from another class to these three pieces of literature. Is it possible to connect our readings to history? Science? Math?????

* Think of some other brilliant way to illustrate the connection you have chosen to focus on. I can’t wait to see your work!

6) Bring your project to class with you on May 18 (Blue) or May 21 (White). You will present your projects to your class. Be prepared to make a thorough explanation of the connections you have made.

How will this be graded?

_____ out of 8: Did you choose and clearly include three pieces of literature from our

reading this year?

_____ out of 12: Did you make a SIGNIFICANT connection with your project?

(Are all three pieces of literature connected equally? Did you make a real connection, considering the literary analysis we have done in class this year? Did you make a connection using one of these literary elements (theme, character, setting, plot, conflict, use of language, or author’s purpose)?

_____ out of 25: Drafting and Editing

( Is your project clear, consistent, vivid, and precise? Is it well-edited?)

______ out of 15: Is your project aesthetically pleasing (neatly done) and correct in

its presentation of the literature?

_____ out of 20: Were you creative and original in illustrating the connection you

chose to make? (Was it obvious that you put thought into what you did? Is there

a piece of YOU in it?)

_____ out of 20: Did you adequately explain your project to the class?

(Was your explanation clear? Do you use formal presentation techniques that we have discussed in class? Is it obvious that you – and all your group members, too – understand the connection that you made?) Are you a good listener and productive audience member?

You will have a small amount of class time to work on this project. You will also need to arrange to spend time out of class working on this. (There will be copies of each novel we have read this year available in my classroom.)
