The activity allows students, as individuals or as a group, to showcase their creative talents by conveying what women’s suffrage means through a “select your own medium” submission, showcase/display their work in the main County building during Women’s History month and receive a raffle ticket for a chance to win prizes including a Santa Clara County Parks annual parking pass and/or a gift card. The year 2020 marks a monumental achievement in United States history as the 100th year anniversary of the 19th amendment, granting women the right to vote. The Centennial Celebration Work Group, co-chaired by Protima Pandey, Office of Women’s Policy, and Sharon Bouska, Past President of the American Association of University Women, has identified this activity to be inclusive with the ability to empower youth voice by setting parameters that respect how students choose to interpret, express and submit what women’s suffrage means to them. This call to action is a collaborative effort by community members and county staff to advance participatory democracy. The first ever “Suffrage…” community engagement activity is now open! The goal is to: educate students by asking a sociohistorical question knowing only a select subgroup of women benefited from the passing of the 19th amendment, bridge the understanding of voting as the people’s voice and the reality of the on-going struggle to access that right and; provide opportunities for an authentic display of expression from our county residents. The theme is “What does women’s suffrage mean to you?” Entry forms, along with appropriate submissions can be uploaded and emailed to we2020@ceo., delivered or mailed to:County Executive Officec/o: Office of Women’s Policy2460 N. 1st Street, Suite 220San Jose, CA 95131Please call the Office of Women’s Policy to make arrangements for your submission: (408) 678-1499.Download entry form (fillable template to save/upload and/or print)The deadline to enter a submission is Friday, February 28, 2020.83058050101500“Suffrage…” entries will be displayed at 70 W.
