DESCRIPTION:

Biology meets the graduation requirement for a life science credit and is a core requirement for graduation.

Biology is a full-year course. Students cover a vast range of life science topics included in the Arkansas Biology Frameworks

and the Next Generation Science Standards otherwise known as Common Core science standards. Lab exercises and activities

are also required.

Arkansas’ Online Biology Curriculum:

INSTRUCTIONAL PHILOSOPHY:

Student will be presented with materials over various biological topics during the year. Students will be given handouts directly

related to the topics being covered. It is important that students keep up with their handouts, homework, classwork, and

other materials that goes along with a unit. High quality work is expected. Classroom activities will include reading, research, projects,

labs, and problem solving. Students will often work in teams, but will be expected to complete individual assignments in relation to

the team’s work. Students are quizzed or questioned on a regular basis to see how they are progressing on a subject.

Grades are often taken on quizzes or other materials before the test. The online grade book is updated regularly to help keep parents

informed of their student’s progress.

EVALUATION:

Students will be evaluated on their performance on selected assignments, quizzes, labs, and tests.

Performance evaluation criteria are based on the school’s weighting guidelines.

Unassisted assignments 70% Tests, unassisted essays, and quizzes

Assisted assignments 30% Homework, checks on learning, class work, group projects, activities, and labs

Grades will be electronically posted as they become available.

Final grades use the standard scale:

100-90 = A

89-80 = B

79-70 = C

69-60 = D THERE IS NO EXTRA CREDIT OFFERED IN THIS COURSE

59- below = F

EXAMINATIONS:

Exams are over a large unit of materials covered over a few weeks. Quizzes are given several times before exams.

Exams will be taken during class. Exams are calculated as unassisted work. Make-up exams can be a different form of the test.

ACADEMIC ASSISTANCE:

Students may utilize teacher assistance, peer assistance, or may be placed in guided study during seminar class, 4th period. Students

can email me at any time about an academic subject: rpalmer@. Internet videos (youtube) are great study resources.

TUTORING:

Before and after school tutoring will be offered free of charge to allow students who seek extra help to receive it.

It can be by me or another teacher. Please contact the teacher to get necessary forms. The schedule will be announced and posted.

MAKEUP WORK:

• Students are responsible for making up missing assignments.

• No assignments can be turned in late after the completion of a unit.

• Classroom presentations missed will appear in the teacher’s weebly website.

• Students are encouraged to speak with the teacher about missed materials outside of class time such as seminar.

• If you have an assignment that was due during an absence, that assignment will be due the next class period.

• Tests announced before an absence are to be taken at the next seminar unless the students makes other arrangements.

LATE WORK:

Students are required to do all work assigned.

Non completion of assignments is detrimental for many reasons; student is not able to learn or practice the material, it can have a dramatic impact on their overall grade. Our expectation is that all work should be turned in on time.  However, on any missed assignment, a mandatory pass will be given to complete the assignment in seminar.  Should a student not attend the mandatory seminar or show up to the seminar unprepared then they will be assigned a detention. Assignments cannot be turned in past the day of the unit exam.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY:

It is the practice of the Bentonville Public Schools to facilitate honesty and integrity among the student body. Student’s work must his/her own. Academic misconduct of any kind is unacceptable.

Essays may be evaluated by by uploading it and having it compared to the internet for plagiarism.
