Course Description:

Academic English is a yearlong course which addresses California’s content and performance standards for 10th grade. The content standards are as follows:

• Word analysis and systematic vocabulary development: The student will determine the meaning of, and use accurately, new words encountered in reading materials by applying previous knowledge.

• Reading comprehension (focus on informational materials): The student will read and understand grade level appropriate material. The student will analyze the organizations, patterns, arguments and positions authors put forth in the reading material.

• Literary Response and Analysis: The student will read and respond to historically or culturally significant works of American, British and world literature. The student will conduct in-depth analysis of recurrent patterns and themes.

• Writing/Process: The student will write effectively for a range of audiences and a variety of purposes while using the steps of the writing process.

• Written English Language Conventions: The student will demonstrate an understanding and application of the English language in written work.

• Written/Communication/Applications: Using conventions correctly and the writing process appropriately, the student will write both literary and informational texts.

• Listening and Viewing: The student will listen to, view, and respond critically to a variety of multimedia communications.

• Speaking: The student will deliver both formal and informal presentations, demonstrating effective organizational strategies and delivery techniques.

Course Objectives:

The student will become:

An accurate, perceptive and careful reader by

o Studying in depth major texts from various literary genres

o Understanding the techniques of poetry as they affect and enhance meaning in a poem

❖ An accurate, perceptive and careful writer by

o Developing a fluent, precise writing style through the preparation of essays

o Employing a wide-range of vocabulary used with accuracy and understanding

o Using a variety of sentence structures

o Using logical organizations, enhanced by specific techniques of coherence such as repetition, transitions and emphasis

o Balancing generalization with specific illustrative detail

An accurate, perceptive and careful speaker/listener by

o Engaging in independent, thoughtful and analytical discourse during class discussions

o Delivering oral reports with poise and clarity

o Working cooperatively in small and large group settings

❖ An accurate, perceptive and careful student by

o Developing independent thought through critical inquiry

o Presenting ideas using clear, coherent and persuasive language

o Creating a highly committed, focused and collaborative community of learners

o Fostering knowledge and a love of literature and regard for the people who create it

o Reading, writing and discussing works with precision, sensitivity, energy and imagination

• Writing assignments that range from one to three typed pages.

• Paper topics that cover a variety of subjects, including theme, setting, style, point of view, character and conflict

Grammar

• Grammar forms of words; parts of speech, syntax – phrases, clauses, sentence types as taught within the context of writing

Vocabulary

• Vocabulary is taught within the context of reading

Grading Requirements

• Participation and Daily Assignments 30%

• Reading and Writing Assignments 35%

• Papers, Projects and Presentations 35%
