|Course Description and Instructional Objectives: This class will cover the Civil War to the present, focusing on concepts, |
|approaches, and vocabulary used by historians. The class will give you some practical experiences that should sharpen your |
|historical awareness and historical abilities in American History. As a student you are expected to at least try while you |
|are in this class. Giving up and not trying is the easy way out. Accept challenges and have confidence in yourself. Giving |
|up on yourself will not allow you to have success. Try first, ask questions and seek help if needed. |

|Course requirements and Evaluation: |

|Students will use the textbook: The Americans is to be brought to class each day if issued to you and returned at the end of|
|the marking period/school year in good condition. Replacement cost of textbook: $50.00. |

|Students are expected to participate in class. You need to raise your hand to make a comment. |
| |

|Students will turn in assignments and homework when they are due. Grade reduction of 50% will be the consequence of late |
|work. Late work WILL NOT be accepted after three days past the original due date. It is the student's responsibility to see |
|that their work makes it to class on time if they are not able to come to class and they wish to receive full credit for |
|their work. Notes will have to be obtained from a classmate. I do not loan out my notes. You are welcome to come before |
|school, during lunch, or after to copy mine. |

|It is the responsibility of the student to make up all missed work as soon as they return. Absence will not be an not be an |
|excuse for missing assignments. Plan ahead if you know you are going to miss class. |

|Marking Period grades: Grades are based on a point system. Each assignment or test has a point value. You want to get as |
|many points as possible to get a good grade. Tests and large projects make up a larger part of the grade. Missed tests due |
|to absences are to be made up within a week. Corrected tests will be passed back. Tests must be made up during lunch time or|
|after school on Wednesdays from 3 to 4pm, not during class time. See Mr. K for special circumstances. |

|All students will be required to take the final exam. |

|Semester grade: Ist marking period =l/3; 2nd marking period =l/3; final exam =l/3 |

|All papers. presentations. large projects that are handed in are to be typed. There are computers available to you in this |
|school, as well as the Lansing Library. I also have a laptop you can use. |

|Field Trips: There may be a few outside trips. There may be a cost for transportation and food. You will be notified when |
|this is the case. All Everett rules apply on any field trip. |

|Attendance: Absences may result in the reduction of the student's grade due to work not being made up or failure to |
|participate in class activities. Please refer to Everett High School's attendance policy in the student handbook. |

|Absences: Absences require the student to inquire about missed work. Missed assignments must be made up within three days|
|of absence. Missed assignments will be accepted if your absence is school related or waived. Skipping class will not allow|
|you to do make up work. |

|Class Rules / Rules for Success in this class: |

|Do Not disrupt the teacher or the class. This includes, but is not limited to, the following: throwing things, outbursts, |
|swearing, bad attitudes, eating, drinking, walking around, talking to other people in the class when it is not allowed and |
|not following requests made by the teacher. Disruptive behavior will not be tolerated. You will be asked to stop; next you |
|will be asked to leave to a location to be determined by the teacher. Failure to go to that location will result in a write |
|up for insubordination. Actions taken for disruptive behavior are: You will be given a verbal warning first, then you will |
|be asked to step out if you don't follow directions. If your behavior problem continues, a parent or guardian will be called|
|which could follow with a conference. If disruptive behavior persists, you could face possible removal from the class and |
|maybe loss of credit. |

|RESPECT!! Above all, respect for classmates, guests and instructor will be mandatory. Respect yourself and your classmates |
|by showing good manners. Treat people like you would truly like to be treated, with respect and kindness. |

|Come to class prepared with the tools to do the job, i.e. pen, paper, folder and textbook. |

|No electronic devices such as pagers, cell phones, walkmans; No cards, dice or other personal items that could be |
|distracting to the learning process. |

|There is no open food, candy, or beverages allowed in this classroom. Open food and pop will be thrown out if you have to |
|be asked to put it away. Gum is fine-- keep it quiet and in your mouth. |

|Stay in your seat until you are dismissed. Do not line up at the door or leave early. |
| |

|Locker passes will not be issued. Please do not ask. Come to class prepared. |
