2013-2014

Required Materials: You will need your IPad everyday and a small binder with loose leaf paper for random assignments.

Required Daily Materials: IPad, writing instruments (pen & pencil), and textbook.

Course Description: United States History fulfills the state and school district requirements for a 10th grade United States history course. This course will examine themes and topics in United States history beginning with early American life to the Civil War and Reconstruction. The course will examine topics and themes including, but not limited to, exploration, colonization, development of American government, westward expansion, Civil War and industrialization.

Grading: Although I do not rely heavily on grades as the best way to assess learning, it is a requirement. Students will be graded based on the following:

Test: Students should be prepared to have at least one test every ten days. This test will generally consist of multiple choice, fill in the blank, short answer and a broad essay question.

Classwork: Students will have the opportunity to gain a large percent of their grade just by completing the daily assignments. NOT all daily assignments will be graded, however, since classwork is a large portion of their grade, it is important that the student complete all assignments.

Bellringer: Each day upon entering the room, the students will sit quietly and begin work on their bellringer. They will be checked on a random basis. When a student is absent from school, with an excused absence, they will not be responsible for making up the journal entry.

Tests: 40%

Classwork: 40%

Bellringer: 20 %

Classroom Rules:

1. Be Responsible For Yourself

2. Be Respectful Of Others

Classroom Expectations: 1) Students are expected to bring writing materials and IPads and readings every day unless otherwise notified. Students are expected to be in class every day that school is in session, according to the sate and school district attendance policies. 2) Disruptive and discourteous behavior (non-class related conversations, disturbing other students vocally or physically, classroom vandalism, including but not limited to writing on desks, putting gum anywhere other than the trash can, etc.) is strictly prohibited. 3) Food and beverages are not allowed in the classroom.

I do not anticipate discipline problems but should these problems occur, the discipline procedures outlined in you child’s Code of Conduct will be followed.

Miscellaneous:

Make up work: Students have 5 days to make up work with an excused absence. Students have 0 day s to make up work with an unexcused absence. If this work is not completed, students will receive a zero for the assignment. DO NOT expect me to hunt you down and beg to have work completed.

Assigned reading: Throughout the semester, students should be prepared to read, discuss and take a large test on a chosen novel. This novel will not only meet the Social Studies requirements, but will also be approved by the English department as being grade level appropriate.

Hall Passes: Passes to leave the room will be given SPARINGLY!!!!!! This means that you should have what you need and be ready to work in this room for the entire 54 minutes. However, I do understand that there are exceptions to this rule. If you are given permission to leave, you must have a pass FROM ME and must sign in and out. If you are going anywhere besides the restroom, before entering back into my room, you must have the pass signed by a member of the staff saying when you left their room. You should know that when I give you a pass to leave this room, I am giving you my trust. Remember what the sign on the door says: “Once you break a trust, the damage is hard to repair”.

Taking Tests: While ANY test is being taken, there is to be no talking. You should either be working on your test or completing the assignment I will have given you to complete. If you are caught talking during a test, you will receive a zero for that test.

General Classroom Respect: Students in this classroom are expected to have a certain form of maturity and are thought to not need to be treated as small children. However, there are a few respectful actions that I expect to see from them. These include but are not limited to:

DO NOT TALK WHILE I AM TALKING. Ask permission before leaving your seat. Do not throw paper at the trash can. Do not mess with the blinds or air conditioner. Do not bother my desk. Do not bother other student’s stuff. Do not bother other students. Do not write on the desks or you will clean them. Do not chew gum, eat food or drink. Clean up around your desk before leaving. Stay seated until I dismiss you, NOT THE BELL OR THE CLOCK. Pay more attention to your work than the clock. If you borrow something, give it back. STAY AWAKE.

Remember: If you respect me, I’ll respect you.

I have read Mrs. Davis’s syllabus and understand her requirements for this class:
