You can create a diagram of a plant and label its parts (roots, stem, leaves, flowers/buds, etc.) and discuss the functions of those parts. Students can refer to this drawing as they complete their own observations over the next several weeks. Worksheet/Information Available at: can also discuss different ecosystems and observe the types of plants and animals that can be found in those habitats. This may also be a good time to discuss seed dispersal (attached handout you can use). Discuss how plants are vital to the survival of animals and humans. Allow students to research how various plants and animals adapt to their environment. Have students give ideas and create a class chart as a reference tool. Next, the students will observe the growth of two plants for several weeks.?Discuss with students what they think plants need to grow/survive. Then ask how we could test those ideas to see if they are true. This should lead to the investigation involving two of the same kind of plants for each student (The same type of seed will be used, but they will be observed under different conditions—see academic prompts below for one idea if students are unsure how they could test their theories on what plants need to grow and survive). ?During this time, they will draw and write in a journal about the changes that are occurring in their plants.??At the end of the growing period, they will write a summary of their observations to use as evidence for what plants need to grow/survive and for the teacher to review.? Teacher scaffold/sentence frame would be appropriate/necessary to help students that have difficulty communicating ideas through writing.**Select hardy varieties of plants for the students to choose from (two or three varieties for easier class comparison), this will allow?the students?to be successful in the activity.??As a culminating activity, the students will create a model to represent different environments.??These models should include diversity of plant and animal life depending on the environment they students choose.???To conclude this lesson, the students will compare and contrast through class discussion the various environments and factors that affect plants and animals in these environments.??Through this activity, students will gain an understanding of the specific needs of various types of plants and animals.Differentiated Instruction:Content is interest based.??Students choose topics to research within the guidelines.Teacher observation will guide students throughout the process. The activities include individual work, pair work, peer groups, collaboration, and whole group learning. Many modalities are utilized through the use of technology, hands-on activities, visual elements, written work, reading assignments, auditory lessons, and teacher-directed instruction.Academic PromptsJournal of Two Plants-?You will select and plant seeds of your choice.?Plant it in a plastic cup using potting soil.?Each student will have two plants. One plant from every student will be kept in the open (by a window) and watered a little each day (20 mL). The second plant will either be kept in a dark place and watered a little each day (20 mL) or kept with the others by a window and only watered once a week (20 mL). These will need to be marked clearly (possibly using a different color cup). You will draw and write about your plants every day for several weeks.??You will also write in your journal daily regarding your observations.??At the end of the plant growth period, you will write a summary of your observation results.**A copy of a journal that can be used is attached, but you may also choose to keep the observations and notes in a science notebook. Culminating Assessment or ProductPlant and Animal Environment You will?create a model to represent a plant and animal environment.?Remember to select plants, animals, and other items carefully for your environment.??You can use pictures from magazines, photos, pictures printed from the internet, small toys, playdough, clay, and other household items to create your environment. Upon conclusion of the activity; you will share your results with your classmates.??As a class, compare and contrast the various environments and the effect on plants and animals in these environments (needs, conditions, challenges, similarities, differences, etc.).?Links and Other ResourcesRelated Websites:?
