English II (10th Grade)

Syllabus 2019-2020

Ms. Barban Room 101B

dbarban@

This syllabus outlines the requirements, expectations and policies for this course. Become familiar with it and keep a copy in your English II folder or binder so that you may refer to it throughout the year.

Course Overview

Welcome to 10th grade English II. Throughout this course you will become intimately familiar with various texts, including literary novels, poetry, essays and informational texts. As we look into each text, you will notice the interesting reflection of someone. When you lean closer, you’ll realize that “books are mirrors: you only see in them what you already have inside you” (Ruiz-Zafon). But you have to look, you have to lean in, and most importantly, you have to want to see. As we all learn to do this, our motto will be: “I don’t talk things, sir. I talk the meaning of things. I sit here and know I’m alive” (Bradbury). Now I ask you, are you alive? Because the magic of literature won’t be until you know you are. In more formal terms, the goal of this course is to make you a better reader and writer that is prepared not only for SAT, ACT, FSA, but also for any writing you will encounter in college, professionally, and personally. But being a better reader and writer depends on the eyes and the effort you use to lean closer. I anticipate a rewarding school year full of new reading experiences.

Accordingly, it is advised that you obtain the texts WELL BEFORE the assigned quarter for which they are assigned. In addition, you may be required to obtain additional texts for your “Book of Choice” and other assignments, for which sufficient advanced notice will be given.

Book of Choice

All students will be required to carry a book, scholarly magazine, or comic book/manga of their choosing, preferably of outstanding literary merit. In the event a student finishes his or her classwork early, the student will be required to supply their Book of Choice. I have a lending library in my classroom and students are encouraged to partake in it, as well as to ask us, and each other, for reading suggestions.

USA Test Prep

All High School Language Arts students will be using the online program, USA Test Prep, regardless of reading level. USA Test Prep will be assigned on a bi-weekly basis in order to assist students with reading comprehension. Although most of the assignments will be performed at home, bi-weekly USA Test Prep assignments will be graded as a Quiz. Make sure not to leave USA Test Prep for the weekend before it is due; a computer error will not excuse you.

Writing Portfolio and

Certain essays and writing assignments given throughout the year will be collected to form a Writing Portfolio that will be worth several grades at the end of the year. Final drafts of essays will be submitted through . If a student fails to submit their assignment to by the due date and time, no credit will be awarded. In addition, once an essay or writing assignment has been graded on , students are required to print out their essays/assignments with my comments and submit the hard copy to me so that I may keep it in their Writing Portfolio. To print an essay with comments from , the following must be done: “To download and print a paper with a full comment list and any rubric information, use the "print" and "download" icon at the bottom left of the GradeMark window. A printable PDF version of the paper will be saved to your computer. Use the print menu from within your computer’s default pdf viewing application to print the GradeMark paper” (, 2015).

Attendance Policy

Daily class attendance is important for student success. If you are absent at any time it is your responsibility to request the class work and homework that was missed. The school wide attendance policy that will be enforced is as follows: 10 UNEXCUSED ABSENCES = FAIL CLASS or FAIL GRADE. Accordingly, you will receive 2 days to complete and return the work ONLY IF your absence is EXCUSED. Regardless of the circumstances individual and group projects MUST be turned in on their originally assigned due date because I will give you enough time to complete it. NO LATE PROJECTS will be accepted.

Tardy Policy

It is imperative that you arrive on time and are seated at your seat and ready to work when the bell rings. Three unexcused tardies in a given quarter will result in a DETENTION.

Homework Policy

Homework assignments will always be written on the board. It is your responsibility to email me or reach out to a classmate in the event you were absent. As reminders for regular homework assignments you will receive a “remind” text message if you are signed up to the class and have the app. For longer, complicated, specific projects, essays, or other assignments given for homework, I will post the instructions and deadline on the school website. DO NOT EXPECT ME TO POST ON THE WEBSITE EVERY SINGLE HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT. I WILL ONLY POST THE LONG AND SUBSTANTIAL HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS ONLINE. Again, for the minor ones that I explain in class, you will receive a text message the day before it is due. Additionally, homework will always be written on the board. It is your responsibility to write it down, remember, and give yourself enough time to complete it regardless of when I send you the reminder.

Academic Integrity

Academic dishonesty of any kind is unacceptable and will NOT be tolerated. This applies to plagiarism, copying, presenting someone else’s work or book to get credit, or any other form of turning in work that is not entirely your own. Any student who is found cheating, colluding or plagiarizing on a test, quiz, essay or other assignment, will receive an automatic Z (zero) and may be reported to administration. Accordingly, parents will be contacted and advised of the student’s academic dishonesty and administration will determine the appropriate consequence.

Discussion Participation

WARNING: This is a discussion-centered class. Student involvement and engagement in class is a huge part of the learning process. Additionally, novel discussions will be graded using a scale that will intensify as the year progresses. The student will have 2-3 classes to gain participation points and earn a good grade for discussion. Once we’ve gone through those 2-3 discussions, the student will receive a CUMULATIVE QUIZ GRADE. Expect 3-4 of these quiz grades to go in per quarter. During class discussion, student contributions (be they comments or questions) must provide proof that student comprehended and completed the assigned reading. Comments must be focused, appropriate, clear and, for best grades: insightful and supported with evidence.

In order to aid with vocabulary expansion, students will be required to study words found on the assigned unit from their vocabulary textbooks and . Textbooks must remain in class at all times but students will have online access to the words and exercises with their login information. Students must learn how to properly use the words in context. Vocabulary test will be given and formats will vary.

StudySync

All students will receive a StudySync workbook within the first two weeks of class. Students do not have to bring their workbooks every class but will be told in advance if they need to bring them or certain pages on a particular day. If the workbook is lost, students must pay a $15 fee for a replacement.

Cell Phone Policy

All cell phones must be placed in the pocket number chart when the student enters the classroom. Cell phones must be SILENCED OR TURNED OFF. In the event a student is found in use of a cell phone during my class, it will be confiscated.

Restroom/Water Fountain

Students must use the restroom or visit the water fountain during lunch or between class periods, as the school schedule allots ample time (7 minutes) between classes to do so. Class time is extremely important; thus, absent a note from a doctor, students will not be permitted to visit the restroom on a regular basis. In the event of an emergency, each student will have no more than three (3) restroom passes for the duration of each quarter. I will be keeping a chart. DO NOT interrupt my lecture or discussion to ask to go to the bathroom.

Rigor

This class is rigorous in that it is both reading and writing intensive. Accordingly, understand that there will be high standards of commitment and performance for all involved.

Communication

It is important to me to have open communication with students and their parents in order to ensure student success. The best method of communication with me is via email. Please feel free to email me with questions or concerns at dbarban@ please write the student’s full name and period number in the email, and afford me a reasonable time (48 hours) to respond. Should parents wish to discuss any concerns in person, parent conferences are made available upon appointment with the Main Office Tues-Thurs.
