Mathematical Literacy

Dear POSD441 ML ?studentsThank you to Laura, who found the 10th edition of the prescribed text book on the net. It is huge so please download on campus:(10th%20Edition).pdfUse the ideas in this book to develop your lesson plans and extend your math knowledge.? Assignments: (These can be done individually or in a group of no more than 3 members)For your lesson plans I am looking for something extraordinary, outside-the-box, interesting and usable. By the end of the year we will share ALL lesson plans so that you all will start your fourth year teaching stint with a minimum of 50 possible lessons and? Geogebra? powerpoints for grades 8 &9 (Math) and Grades 10 & 11 (ML)Please make sure you take note of the following criteria:????????? The lesson you write up must be REPLICABLE. A colleague must be able to follow your lesson plan and copy your lesson in class EXACTLY. That means all descriptions, ?examples , powerpoints, videos, exercises, assessments must be fully explicated.????????? The lesson must be ORIGINAL. Do not merely copy from a text book. There are TONS of ideas on the internet. Finding sources on the internet is part of the exercise. ?Share websites BUT make the lesson your own creation.????????? The lesson must contain the following:o?? Outcomes (be specific)o?? CAPS reference (quote it)o?? Describe what the teacher will do (include resources)o?? Describe what the learners will do ?(include investigations, activities? and exercises)Describe how you will assess whether the outcomes have been achieved (“finish for homework” is unacceptable)? Statistics Lesson - 17 August Probability lesson - 7 September? GeoGebra powerpoint - 19 October (Google ppt GeoGebra for ideas)? Final ePortfolio - 26 October. There is no need to make a hard copy if you have loaded everything onto your website? ?? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? This semester we will be concentrating on three aspects of math teaching:????????? Developing mathematical proficiency through studying? a video based course by Jo Boaler from Stanford University; through exploring the methodology of Number Talks and through delving into reasons for mathematical misconceptions. For this we will use Deborah Ball’s (Michigan State University) items concerning Mathematical Knowledge for Teaching (MKT).????????? Exploring ways of teaching grade 8 and 9 mathematics and grade 10 mathematical literacy for understanding e.g. visual proofs of? Pythagoras’ theorem; conceptual ways of finding the circumference and area of a circle. Bring ideas and short presentations to share with us all.????????? Coming to grips with Geogebra. The most frustrating part of setting math exams? is not knowing how to draw….. This semester spend time each week following the study guide, finding Geogebra lessons on the internet? and playing with the features of GeoGebra. Learning a skill cannot be accomplished in one sitting. This course is organic so bring ideas, questions and curiosity to class – share it! Start now…..Enjoy!Lyn ................
