Charles Henderson High School ?Curriculum Guide 2019-2020 “Trojans Committed to Success”General Information Students will take EIGHT (8) courses during the 2019-2020 school year. ?Students are required to take one of each four academic core courses (English, math, science, and social studies) each scholastic year. ?Counselors and administrators will provide guidance for course selections based on the number of required core credits that have already been obtained to fulfill graduation requirements. All students will work with counselors or other local school personnel to select courses to earn the required number of credits for the chosen diploma and/or endorsement. Dual EnrollmentTo enter dual enrollment, students must be in the 10th grade or above and must have a qualifying ACT score of 20. Students must also score at least a 20 on the English portion of the ACT. Promotion/Grade Classification Based on state requirements and the Troy City Schools Board approval, students must earn a minimum of 24 credits (Carnegie units) to graduate with a high school diploma. Students pursuing the Honors Diploma must earn 27 credits. ?For reclassification status for promotion and graduation, the guidelines are as follows: To be a tenth grader (sophomore), a student must have earned 6 credits. To be an eleventh grader (junior), a student must have earned 12 credits. To be a twelfth grader (senior), a student must have earned 18 credits. To graduate, a student must have earned a minimum of 24 credits. Alabama High School Diploma with HONORS Distinction AREAS OF STUDY REQUIREMENTS CREDITS English Language Arts English 9, 10, 11, and 12 Must be Honors/AP/postsecondary ?equivalent option of these courses 4 Mathematics Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II w/Trig plus one math beyond Alg. II w/Trig. Additional course(s) to complete the four credits in mathematics must be chosen from the Alabama Course of Study: ?Mathematics or Career Tech Education (CTE)/AP/IB/postsecondary equivalent courses. 4 Science All science courses must be Honors/AP/Post-Secondary Level to include: Biology and a physical science The third and fourth science credits may be used to meet both the science and CTE course requirements and must be chosen from the Alabama Course of Study: Science.4 Social Studies All Honors/AP/Post-Secondary equivalent courses to include: World History, US History x 2, and Government/Economics or AP/postsecondary equivalent 4 Physical Education LIFE (Personal Fitness) One JROTC credit may be used to meet this requirement 1 Health Education Alabama Course of Study: ?Health Education 0.5 Career Preparedness Career Preparedness Course (Career and Academic Planning, Computer Applications, Financial Literacy) 1 Foreign Language CTE and/or Arts Education Students choosing CTE. Foreign Language, or Arts Education are encouraged to complete two courses in sequence. 3 *Electives 5.5 ?Total Credits Required for Graduation 27ALABAMA HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS(Alabama Administrative Code 290-3-1-02(8) and (8)(a))Effective for students in the ninth grade in the 2013-2014 school year, all students shall earn the required credits for the Alabama High School Diploma. A local board of education may establish requirements for receipt of diplomas and endorsements, but any diploma or endorsement shall include the requirements of the Alabama High School Diploma. Teachers are employed and books/online texts are purchased based upon the course selection process. Once choices are made, the school is staffed to try to meet the stated demand. Charles Henderson High School will follow the procedures below to complete the registration and scheduling process in the most efficient manner possible: Students will receive Course Selection Guides via their electronic device and Course Selection Forms will be paper/pencil and will be distributed in large groups. Current CHHS 8th graders will receive these during an academic planning session each Spring. Students will meet in small groups to select courses for the following year using the Course Selection Guide and the Course Selection Form. ?These forms will be taken home to finalize course offerings and to review proposed selections with his/her parent(s)/guardian(s). Upon review of the proposed course selections, parents and students will sign off indicating that they agree with the courses for the 2019-2020 school year. If there are questions or concerns, the parent can either indicate this at the bottom of the registration form or contact the counselor. Students will meet with the counselor and/or other staff members to review their current academic transcript and course selections for the 2019-2020 school year. Once the course selections have been verified and approved by the staff member, students will enter their course selections into the computer. Students will receive verification forms in May. These should be reviewed with parents/guardians to verify course selections for the 2019-2020 school year are correct. Upon review of the verification forms, parents/guardians should sign the form and students should return the signed form to the Media Center. Students/parents/guardians will not be permitted to make any schedule changes after the established deadline of May 31st unless the school has made an error in the schedule or principal approval. Please realize that you do not register for or request a particular teacher. ?Teaching assignments are subject to change over the summer and student schedules will not be changed based on a teacher of a particular course. ?Counselors will keep all registration forms and schedule change request forms to verify and document all course selections and schedule change requests. Students that do not complete the registration process by May 31, 2019, will have all courses selected by his/her counselor and will forfeit the opportunity to make any changes.
