We learn by doing.Be Responsible: At this point in your school careers you don’t need a list of rules. You know how to conduct yourself and that etiquette translates to online schooling as well. Get up, log on, do your work, don’t interrupt, treat your classmates with kindness, etc. Electronics Policy: be responsible and respectful: Online instruction is going to make using electronics during live instruction hours for entertainment and social reasons really tempting. Please use devices in conjunction with the class (calendars and reminders, take pictures or save notes, look things up, etc.) But please refrain from social use such as texting, games, and social media during live instruction. Likewise, please, no music during live munication: Check Canvas daily. I keep up with Canvas, calendars of upcoming assignments, and I can be contacted anytime via email. If you ever have a question, please feel free to ask! In the end, however, students’ grades are their responsibility, as is knowing due dates and completing assignments correctly.Text Selection & Materials:31375354445Check out For my MLA style guide and supplementary resources00Check out For my MLA style guide and supplementary resourcesNotebook: Students might still find it helpful to have a physical notebook to keep up, but a digital notebook would be good too. Keep a folder on your computer, device or Google Drive dedicated to English so that you can keep track of your notes and assignments. Keep stuff there even after you turn it in.Turnitin, Canvas, Teams & myPerspectives: Students will need to sign up this class on turnitin. And Microsoft Teams. If you get stuck, though, I’ll be happy to help you out.The following is a small sampling of some the major authors and ideas that we will cover in class. Each of these will be supplemented with short stories, poems, and nonfiction works that are relevant to the themes and concepts being studied. These units and their order are subject to change based on individual classroom needs and, well, the nature of 2020. At the end of each quarter, each student will have a conference in which we discuss what they have done that quarter (Learning Portfolio). I.e. students can have a say in what grade they receive if they can prove they have learned and progressed.Breakdown of GradesGrading ScaleA 90-100Tests and Major Assignments …………………….40%B 80-89C 70-79Learning Portfolio: online open note quizzes, Participation, Classwork ……………………………..60%D 60-69F < 60***Each quarter is worth 20% of the final grade for the year. A final exam will count for the last 20% of the final grade.***Academic Integrity: beware plagiarism! There are many levels and it’s changing – we will go over inadvertent plagiarism and how to avoid it. Overt plagiarism such as cutting and pasting work and claiming it’s your own, however, will result in a zero, and completion of the assignment correctly. Again, always turn in work you can be proud of!Attendance and TardiesDiscussion and class participation are an integral part of this course, therefore, attendance both physically and mentally is important. Please do your best to attend all live instruction times (attendance will be taken). When you cannot attend class, be sure to watch the recorded class on Teams.Late Work Traditionally, late assignments are not acceptable unless an extension is granted prior to the due date. Extensions will not be granted on the day something is due. Late assignments will be reduced 10 points per day up to five days. After five days it’s a zero. As per Grimsley policy, if a student is absent when an assignment is given, he or she has three days after returning to turn it in. This policy, however, does not apply to assignments that are given in advance or over a period of time. It is intended for nightly, short range assignments, which will be rare in this class. I keep a calendar on my website and students will be given ample notice of assignments and due dates. It is their responsibility, then, to plan accordingly. If a student is absent the day something is due, it should be emailed to me. If the assignment cannot be submitted electronically, it is due the day the student returns. If a student misses a quiz or test, he or she has three days to make it up and may not use class time to do so. It is the student’s responsibility to make these arrangements. Long term absences will be treated on a case by case basis. Plan on these policies being in place even though we are in a virtual learning environment, but know that we may all need to be flexible.Extra Credit46846071142365School Wide Reading Program: Even when we’re virtual, students should read a book of their choosing 20 minutes each day! 00School Wide Reading Program: Even when we’re virtual, students should read a book of their choosing 20 minutes each day! I don’t offer extra credit very often or arbitrarily. Extra credit is not a loophole for students who haven’t done the work; it’s for students who have done all of the work and need a little extra to boost their grade. If you find yourself in such a situation, I’m not going to throw a packet of busywork at you, but if you take initiative and ownership of your learning, that’s a different story. Hint: if you ask me about extra credit, SWRP is probably the first thing I’m going to ask you about.-19050108585 ................
