Name of Project: Math Concept Videos

Project Overview

Give a brief overview of the project you are planning.

I will be working with 11th and 12th grade students in my Precalculus and Calculus classes to develop instructional videos for use with Elementary and Middle School students in our district. We will focus the videos around the standards of the Common Core Standards for Mathematics. The videos can be used to help in instruction, supplement the instruction, re-teach, or support the students’ learning as the classroom teacher decides. We will not only plan, produce, create, and edit the videos; but we will take the videos and dub them into languages of some of the ELL students in the district. This will utilize students at the high school that speak these other languages, even if they are not in the Precalculus or Calculus classes. We hope to utilize members of the business community, engineering community and the college community to fill in a segment of the video that explains where the mathematics is used. We are planning to partner with the Community Media Center for training and to utilize video recording equipment.

Effective Practice: MEANINGFUL SERVICE

Service learning actively engages participants in meaningful and personally relevant service activities.

What community need will you address and how did you determine the need?

We will be providing instructional aides for Elementary and Middle School teachers to address concepts that must be mastered under the Common Core Mathematics Standards.

What service will you provide to address the need?

We will be filming, editing, translating, and storing 10-minute videos to address concepts in the Common Core Mathematics Standards for Elementary and Middle School. These videos may be used for classroom instruction, student re-teaching, student review, and concept support. We will provide the videos in English, Spanish, Vietnamese, Bosnian, etc. We will expand to other languages as the need arises.

Effective Practice: LINK TO CURRICULUM

Service learning is intentionally used as an instructional strategy to meet learning goals and/or content standards.

How is this project related to your curriculum?

The project will work with many of the concepts that the students will have mastered in the past, but may have forgotten. This will help to strengthen their understanding of the mathematics we are responsible for in my classes.

What are the educational goals?

The hope is to strengthen the students’ own understanding of the mathematics as they are creating the videos to help the younger students.

Additional State Standards and Benchmarks

List standards and benchmarks met by this project. (You may attach a copy of the Content Standards and Benchmarks highlighting the items met by this project.)

Specific standards will depend on the concepts that the Elementary and Middle School teacher provide us as areas of need. But because these match the curriculum of the elementary and middle school, they will address those strands in the Curriculum Crafter.

Effective Practice: REFLECTION

Service learning incorporates multiple challenging reflection activities that are ongoing and that prompt deep thinking and analysis about oneself and one’s relationship to society.

What form(s) of reflection will you use with the students to help them identify what they have learned and accomplished?

We will utilize journal responses, group discussions, and interviews with the elementary and middle school teachers and students. We will hope to gain insight into improvements that can be made in the project and the effectiveness of the project on the younger students.

Effective Practice: DIVERSITY

Service learning promotes understanding of diversity and mutual respect among all participants.

What types of diverse perspectives and experiences will be explored as part of your project?

(i.e.: cultural, generational, abilities/disabilities, learning styles, etc)

Students will be challenged with looking at the understanding of the concepts from different learning styles, ability levels, and languages.

Effective Practice: YOUTH VOICE

Service learning provides youth with a strong voice in planning, implementing, and evaluating service learning experiences with guidance from adults.

How will students gain ownership of the project?

Students will be given voice by choosing the topics to address and by creating the plan, script, and production of the videos.

Effective Practice: RECIPROCAL PARTNERSHIPS

Service learning partnerships are collaborative, mutually beneficial, and address community needs.

Who will you partner with for this project?

Our partners will be teachers from the Elementary and Middle School.

How will students benefit from this partnership?

Students will benefit from this partnership by being given the opportunity to work with adults and mentor young people through the videos they are creating. This will also strengthen the students’ understanding of the mathematics concepts.

How will the partner benefit from this collaboration?

The partners will benefit, because they will be provided with a teaching tool that help to address the needs of students that are struggling with the mathematics concepts. It could be students that are struggling with learning the concept, or that are struggling because of a language barrier.

Effective Practice: PROGRESS MONITORING

Service learning engages participants in an ongoing process to assess the quality of implementation and progress toward meeting specified goals, and uses results for improvement and sustainability.

How will you assess the student learning goals?

Students will be provided with a rubric that will address the quality of the video, as well as the correctness of their mathematics understanding.

How will you assess your service goals?

The assessment of the service goal will be by feedback from the elementary and middle school teachers on the effectiveness of the videos and how often students utilize the opportunity.

Effective Practice: DURATION AND INTENSITY

Service learning has sufficient duration and intensity to address community needs and meet specified outcomes.

How will you prepare students for this experience?

We will be attending training through the Community Media Center to learn the production of the videos. Students will be given examples of explanations for the topics that teachers would like to see in the videos.

What are some sample possible activities students might do as part of this project?

Students will be setting up scenes, planning scripts, and acting out the demonstrations of the mathematics topics to teach the student younger students.

Students will be using an iPad and data projector to project explanations of the mathematics concepts during the production.

Student will be using iMovie to edit the videos that will be stored in an external hard drive until editing is complete. Then the videos will be formatted into a version that can be stored on a website for teacher, student, and parent use.

SUSTAINABILITY

The three arms of sustainability are environmental stewardship, economic growth, and social progress. Think planet, profit, and people.

Describe how your project addresses the issue of sustainability?

This project will be sustainable in that I will have a continual change over of students from year to year to work on the videos. With the large number of standards available in the Common Core Standards for Mathematics, we will have a vast amount of material to work on. The students that we see coming through out district will provide us with clients that will benefit from having these videos to support their learning.
