Dear Coach,

The 13th annual Mu Alpha Theta Fall Classic will be held at Thomas Jefferson High School on Saturday, November 14th, 2009. The contest is designed to reward excellence in mathematics. You do NOT have to be a member of Mu Alpha Theta to participate in the contest. The format will be as follows:

1:15 to 2:00 Team Test

2:15 to 2:45 Awards

TESTS:

All tests may cover any mathematical topic. The Individual test will be 40 problems multiple choice. The Team test will consist of teams made up of 4 students. The divisions are 11th/12th and 9th/10th. A 9th or 10th grade student may be on an 11th/12th team. However, if you want to mix 9th, 10th graders with 11th, and 12th grade students, they must compete in the 11th/12th-grade division.

The team test will consist of 20 multiple-choice questions.

Ciphering will be ten rounds of four problems each round. This test is done individually. Each problem is worth 1 points.

Individuals or teams of 2 or 3 may compete as well. Individuals will be eligible for trophies on the Individual and ciphering tests. Overall team awards are a combination of all 4 scores, so it would be extremely difficult for a team of 1, 2 or 3 to win a team award.

Awards—On the Individual test and Ciphering, trophies will be awarded to the top ten individual places in each grade level, 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th. Any Junior High student will compete in the 9th grade division. For the Team results, the winning teams will be the combination of the four Individual scores divided by 4, the four Ciphering scores divided by 4, and the score of the Team test added to those averages. The trophies will be given to the top ten teams in the 11th/12th and 9th/10th grade divisions.

Costs—The cost is $35 per team of four, or $10 for an individual (checks made out to Thomas Jefferson High School) PO’S ARE NOT ACCEPTED. All money will be collected the day of the competition.

The student names and the number of teams are due Friday, November 6th. If you have any questions, call Tom Norris at 253-945-5655. EMAIL tnorris@
