A thesis is just a fancy way of making a claim. When you write an essay, you MUST clearly state your thesis at the end of the introduction paragraph. It needs to be there. If you don’t have a thesis, you don’t have a quality essay. The reason you write an entire essay is to prove your thesis statement. You NEED to remember this. Tattoo it on your face. Your thesis guides your whole essay!Thesis Statement – A thesis is a direct statement that explains the topic of your essay, what you believe about that topic, and why you believe it.A thesis statement is made up of three different parts. Every thesis needs these three things:Identification (What is the topic you are talking about?)Claim (What do you believe about the topic?)Reasoning (What are the 3 main reasons you can support your claim? This will basically outline the body paragraphs of your essay.)EXAMPLE:Writing Prompt: Educators often discuss whether high school sports have a positive influence on students. Some educators think high school sports do have a positive influence because the lessons learned from athletic competition add to the lessons learned in the classroom. Other educators think high school sports do not have a positive influence because the emphasis on sports often overshadows student achievement in other areas. In your opinion, do high school sports have a positive influence on students?ID-Identify topic Sports offered in high schoolClaim-What you believe They have a positive influenceReasoning-3 general reasons you believe your claim is trueTeach social skillsTeach time-managementProvide exercise and teach benefits of hard workThesis: High school sports unquestionably have a positive influence on high school students because they teach social skills, reinforce time-management skills, provide exercise and show the benefits of hard work.Guided PracticeWriting Prompt: The state of Illinois has been locked in a debate for several years as to whether the driving age should be raised from 16 to 18.? What can the writer do to make it a more effective or better articulated thesis?Does the introduction accurately hint at the main content of the paper? Does the intro provide a connection to Microserfs? Does it provide enough information about the topic it is pursuing? How would you characterize the use of sources and quotations/paraphrasing in the paper? Not enough quotes? Too many? Not properly documented? Not analyzed enough? Too few sources used?Look at the draft for organization of ideas. Check to see if the writer has organized paragraphs around main ideas rather than relying on sources to write the paper for him. If the sources begin a paragraph, make sure the writer has introduced the source with a leading sentence that contextualizes it.Has the writer provided enough supporting ideas (including specific illustrations and examples) to convince you that his/her thesis is a valid one? Note where points need further development on the part of the writer. Are there too many ideas or points being made so that there is not a coherent idea being presented throughout the essay?Check any places in the draft where the writer has either neglected to document source material or has used incorrect (unconventional) documentation format.List below at least two specific aspects of the paper that you think work well in the paper (e.g., a phrase you like, a good example, et cetera) and at least two specific things (which you have not already mentioned above) that could use more work before the essay is submitted as a final draft (e.g., stronger examples, better sources, a more focused thesis). Don't just say good examples"--tell the writer which ones you think are good and why.AGREEMENT NOT TO PLAGIARIZE *Tape me to the inside of your manila folder*I, ________________________________, pledge that I have read and understand the “Plagiarism: A Warning” document.
