Systematic Theology – Syllabus

Objective: By the end of this course the students shall have a firm grasp of the basic theological doctrines of the Christian faith and be able to articulate them in a systematic fashion.

Description: Covers most of the main Christian doctrines with the exception of the End Times which is well covered in other courses (e.g on the prophetic books, Daniel, Revelation etc).

Textbook: Wayne Grudem: Systematic Theology (Inter-Varsity Press, Zondervan) available from nearly all Christian bookstores and online.

Course Outline:

1. (Chapters 1-3) Introduction, The Word of God, The Canon of Scripture

2. (Chapters 4-8) The Four Characteristics of Scripture

3. (Chapters 9-11) Attributes of God: Existence, Knowability, The Incommunicable Attributes

4. (Chapters 12-14) Communicable Attributes, Trinity

5. (Chapters 15-17) Creation, Providence, Miracles

6. (Chapters 18-20) Prayer, Angels, Satan & Demons

7. (Chapters 21-23) Creation & Essential Nature of Man

(Mid-term test given 14th June due 2 wks later on the 28th June AT THE LATEST)

8. (Chapters 24 & 25) Sin & Covenants

9. Chapter 26 – The Person of Christ

10. Chapter 27 &28 - The Atonement, Resurrection & Ascension

11. Chapters 29 & 30 – The Offices of Christ, The Work of the Holy Spirit

12. Chapters 31-35 – Grace, Gospel Calling, Regeneration, Conversion

13. Chapters 36-40 – Justification, Adoption, Baptism In the Spirit, Sanctification, Perseverance

14. Chapters 41-43 – Death, Glorification, Union With Christ

15. Chapters 44-53 – Rapid overview of the Doctrine of the Church

(Final test will handed out 2nd August and is due 16th August AT THE LATEST)

Assessment:

1. A mid-term test worth 35% (50 question take-home exam, do at your own pace, open-book)

2. A final test worth 55% (75 question take home exam, do at your own pace, open-book)

3. Class participation and attendance – 10%

4. The exams are EASY and are mainly for review and teaching purposes.

All exams should be physically submitted in typed format to Brad Harte (college registrar) for collection first. Please keep a copy for yourself. Please put your name on the assessment and on the filename if submitted by email (as a backup only) e.g. bob_smith_final_exam.doc NO ASSESMENT WILL BE MARKED AFTER THE FINAL DUE DATE.

Class Discussion: Because of the vast amount of material to be covered class questions must be on the topic being studied that evening.
