Course Intro: This year’s social studies curriculum will include the major world regions including Middle East, Africa, and Asia. Four main strands will be included in each study; history, geography, government/civics, and economics. A complete list of the Georgia Performance standards for seventh grade social studies can be found at:

Course Outline: Southwest Asia (Middle East)- This unit will include an overview of physical and cultural geography, the origin of Middle Eastern cultures, 21st century Middle East, and political and economic systems.- 9-12 weeks

Africa- This unit includes an overview of physical and cultural geography, the origin of African cultures, colonization and independence of African nations, political and economic systems, and 21st century Africa. -9-12 weeks

Southern and Eastern Asia- This unit will include an overview of physical and cultural geography, origin of Asian cultures, political and economic systems, and 21st century Asia. -9-12 weeks

Common Core: As part Georgia’s new Common Core, we will be responsible for incorporating reading and writing standards for literacy in social studies. These standards require more in-depth reading and writing throughout this course. Document Based Question Units (DBQs) will be utilized each quarter, along with additional texts and novel study components.

Research Sources: Students will be actively involved in various forms of research throughout this course. Cobb County Virtual Library resources will be available for student use at school as well as at home- . A resource page is also available on Mr. Klein’s blog that will have links for specific topics of study.

Green Policy: Students will be given ONE copy of all handouts. If handouts are misplaced, students may access available assignments on the teacher blog to be reprinted at home.

Academic Honesty: All student work should be the work of that student. All written and homework should be completed in the student’s own words, including research assignments. Credit will not be given for work that is “copied and pasted” from the internet or copied from another student.

Make-up/Late Work: If a student is absent from school, it is his or her responsibility to gather and make up the assignments missed. LATE ASSIGNMENTS will not be accepted without an excused absence. Students will have the same number of days absent to have the work completed and turned in to the teacher. If a student is absent on a test or quiz day, they are expected to make up the test/quiz on the day they return.

When a student is absent, they need to do the following:

1. Check the blog for assignments and handouts.

2. Ask a peer at your table if additional explanation is needed.

3. See Mr. Klein if questions remain or a test/quiz needs to be taken.

Communication: A teacher blog will be posted on the Palmer website attached to Greg Klein under the “Faculty/Staff” link. This site will be updated daily/weekly with course and assignment information. This site will also provide links to handouts and study guides when available. The best way to contact me is via email at gregory.klein@. Please forward all questions and/or concerns to this address for a prompt and timely response

Grading Procedures: Students will be given a variety of assessments. All major social studies assessments will be given/due on Tuesdays or Thursdays.
