Phoenix Outpatient Recreation Therapy ProgrammingOutpatient Recreational Therapy Programming options vary depending on session. Group sessions are offered in 12 week format with specific start and stop dates. The groups listed below include some of the groups that have been offered in the past. Please call the clinic directly to learn about groups that are currently offered, either through face to face or VA Video Connect (telehealth) option. We look forward to hearing from you soon!Trauma Release Exercises (TRE): Program teaching self-help techniques that target the parasympathetic nervous system to release deep muscular patterns of stress, tension, and trauma. Tai Chi Chih:Designed to energize the mind and body through a series of graceful, slow movements. This style focuses on individual movements and the repetition of them. It focuses heavily on breathing patterns.Tai Chi Chuan:Designed to energize the mind and body through a series of graceful, slow movements. This style focuses on a series of movements, typically by repeating the series to ensure proficiency. Chair Yoga:Gentle practice in which postures are performed while seated. It is a great form of yoga for beginners or anyone who wants to focus on a gentle practice to promote relaxation, increase flexibility, improve physical strength, enhance focus, and assist with pain management. Exploring Yoga:This program is designed to introduce yoga experience incorporating standing and floor exercises to promote relaxation, increase flexibility, improve physical strength, enhance focus, and assist with pain management. Individuals need to be able to easily move from the floor to standing without assistance.Seated Group Exercise:This program consists of seated exercise which includes: stretching, resistance band exercises, flexibility, and low impact cardio.Leisure Education:Increase your awareness of personal leisure interests, learn how participating in pleasurable activity can promote physical, emotional, mental wellness while learning about community resources in your neighborhood.Raise your Self-Esteem:Are you struggling to find your self-confidence? In this group, you will participate in a variety of activities that provide you opportunities for overall growth and well-being.Exploring Chair Exercise:An exploration of exercises that can be done from a seated position. This will include cardio, strength, yoga, and much more Role Playing Games:Designed to stimulate creativity as we focus on character development and embark on a fictional journey together (no prior RPG experience needed). Releasing Anger through Rec & Leisure:While identifying personal barriers and triggers to anger, explore positive alternatives to release anger and improve your quality of life. Exploring Tai Chi:This program is designed to introduce a foundation for Tai Chi Chih and Tai Chi Chuan. Tai Chi Chih focuses on the repetition of individual movements, Tai Chi Chuan focuses on the developmental of a series of movements. Healthy Leisure Choices:Exploration of barriers and opportunities to improve all aspects of wellness (physical, social, spiritual, emotional, cognitive). The program will assist with determining current level of wellness and provide education, resources and skills to improve quality of life and overall wellness. Intro to Guitar:During this group, Veterans will be presented with a variety of basic guitar skills. This is geared towards beginners as we will learn: how to tune the guitar, basic chords, strumming patterns, reading tablature and much more. Veterans will need to bring their own acoustic, 6 string guitar in good working condition to participate. Creativity and Cardio:Program to experience cardio exercise from a new perspective! Participants will engage in education and practice on various cardio forms.Leisure Education Magic:Program consists of various social and engagement techniques involved in presenting magic tricks. Each week a new trick will be learned!Mind and Body for Cognition:Program specially designed for individuals with cognitive impairments to engage in a small group atmosphere using a variety of creative outlets: including music, art, humor, reminiscing, and games.Book Club:Do you like to read? Do you enjoy discussing books? Would you like to explore being in a book club and have the experience to later join in a community book club? Here’s an opportunity to enjoy reading a book and socialize with a small group of participants! Reading assignments vary but tend to be a few chapters each week.Music for Wellness: No music skills required, just a love for music! Explore music as a therapeutic tool to make positive changes in mood and emotional state, interact socially with others and work together in a group setting. Veterans will learn to understand how music and rhythm can benefit their physical, emotional and spiritual wellness. Some examples of interventions may include: drumming, music & movement, Tibetan bowl relaxation, guided meditation, and musical improvisation. Confidence through Improv:Are you struggling to find your self-confidence? In this group, you will participate in a variety of improv games to boost your self-esteem and provide an opportunity to express yourself in a social setting. No acting or improv experience required!Group ExerciseThis program consists of seated or standing exercise which includes: stretching, resistance band exercises, flexibility, and low impact cardio. Core and Stability:Designed to teach basic core strengthening and balance skills from a chair utilizing evidence-based techniques which are taught to increase strength and improve neuromuscular balance. Crafting your Emotions:Telehealth program for those with a creative passion. This group will entail creative outlets as well as a social way to connect with our peers and the community. Music for Wellness: No music skills required, just a love for music! Explore music as a therapeutic tool to make positive changes in mood and emotional state, interact socially with others and work together in a group setting. Veterans will learn to understand how music and rhythm can benefit their physical, emotional and spiritual wellness. Podcast ExplorationExplore a variety of topics as we listen and discuss different podcasts. Each week we will engage in a discussion based on the listen of the day and share thoughts and emotions associated with the listen. Tech & LeisureA connection for tech savvy people to connect with different apps and community resources to facilitate independent leisure.Therapeutic Expression:Program to aid in one’s overall well-being using a variety of creative outlets including music, art, and creative writing in a focused setting. Life Through Stories:Program offering a way to put our life stories on paper utilizing creative writing skills and prompts.Sounds of Relaxation:Learn and practice a variety of sound and music based relaxation techniques to improve mood, pain, and tension reduction. Social Games:Program that offers a therapeutic social environment built to foster social engagement and skills.Healing through Journaling:Explore different ways to express your ideas and events through writing. Journal your way to self-discovery and gain insight into one’s thoughts behaviors, and feelings. Healing Through Movement:Program that consists of educating and engaging participants in Tai Chi and Yoga. Intro to Leisure Skills Leather:Program that offer introductory skills for leather work. Intro to Leisure Skills Pottery:Program that offers an introduction to basic pottery skills.Intro to Leisure Skills Crafting:Program that consists of basic introduction to various crafting skills. This program will cover various skills as well as how to engage independently and in the community.Handling your Depression:Program specifically designed to assist individuals with management of depression symptoms through leisure. This group will involve hands on creativity as an outlet for expression.Drumming:Program to aid in one’s overall wellbeing utilizing a variety of drums. This program’s focus is on self-expression through creative outlets. Brain Games:This group will provide participants an opportunity to use their “brain power” to explore and complete a series of interactive leisure activities. Group is designed to work on cognition, social skills, cooperative play, and enhanced memory. LGBTQ:A program geared toward hobby building and community resources that provide a safe, inclusive space for those who identify as LGBTQA+ Qi Gong:Breath, meditation and movement are combined in a seamless practice to create a deep sense of peace, wellbeing and better health. This group meets in Indian Steele Park as well as in the topaz clinic. Individuals need to be able to easily move from the floor to standing without assistance.Crafting Emotions:Telehealth program for those with a creative passion.
