If you do not have internet access at home, your own computer, and/or are inexperienced with computers and technology, it is probably not a good idea to take an online course. You are also required to regularly check your student email. “I didn’t check my email,” “My internet went down,” or “My computer broke” are not valid excuses for missed or late work. If your internet goes down, go to a café (Panera, McDonald’s, Starbucks, and many other local businesses provide free WiFi), a friend’s house, the school, or the public library. If your computer breaks, borrow one or go to the public library or school.Your computer and browser should meet the following minimum requirements:The most recent version of Firefox (some features of the school’s website & BlackBoard don’t work with other browsers). The most recent edition of Adobe ReaderUpdated antivirus software (AVG is free and reliable)MS WordYou should feel confident operating:MS WordWeb browsing and searchingBlackboardEmailDownload MS Word here: -- Students are entitled to a free version of Office 365, by using their student email. Rubrics & full guidelines will be posted, describing what makes up an A paper, B paper, etc. All assignments must be posted in .docx format. Essay #1: You will write 2-3 pages on a conspiracy theory of your choice, using 3-4 popular web sources. Then, you will write 2-3 pages in which you thoroughly evaluate the quality of your sources. One source must be a “high quality” source, one must be a Wikipedia article, and one must be a “garbage” source. We will go over evaluating sources in the first couple weeks. The essay should be in MLA format; however, students enter this class from a range of skill sets, so for this paper, it’s OK if your MLA formatting has errors. (We will go over the elements of MLA in detail later on in the semester.) For this essay, you will submit a proposal and a final draft.Essay #2: An informal literary analysis examining how a specific subject carries out in an individual work that we have studied in this course. It must be 4-5 pages, include a debatable thesis, and use 3-4 outside sources. One of these must be from a scholarly/academic journal. For this essay, you will submit an outline and a final draft.Essay #3: A 7-9 pg. formal research paper that will be submitted in stages – you will turn in a proposal, a formal outline, a partial rough draft, and a final draft. Each part of your research paper must: 1) demonstrate a well-defined, original, debatable, and interesting thesis on the basis of textual and contextual evidence using reasoning, imagination, logic, and speculation; 2) situate its argument with respect to at least eight sources, four of which are from scholarly/academic journals, and two of which are books outside of those assigned in class; 3) not summarize, quote, or paraphrase texts or sources unnecessarily, i.e. in a manner that does not develop your argument or analysis; 4) not rely on vague generalizations about its subject; 5) use the MLA style of citation and bibliography. We will be discussing all aspects of the research paper in class, including practical strategies for developing research topics, navigating sources, and revision. Your topic must at least vaguely relate to one of the texts we’ve read in class.Final: Short answer and short essay questions, chosen from a list given out at the beginning of the exam, about the literature we’ve read in class.QUIZZES: Short quizzes will be administered regularly with an emphasis on the technical aspects of writing and researching. Generally these will be 5-10 pts each.DISCUSSION BOARD: Each week, you will be required to respond to the assigned reading(s) using the discussion board on Blackboard. We will use these informal exercises as a way to think more deeply about the issues we are discussing. They will also be used as a way to see how you are progressing. You are required make thoughtful, well-considered replies to at least two posts authored by your classmates. Generally these will be 15 pts each.Library Card: You must obtain and then post a photo of a MLN library card by Sunday, 3/24. This assignment is worth 5 pts. (Keep in mind that most branches are closed on Sundays.) You will receive 10 pts in extra credit if you visit the school’s library to conduct research for Essay #3, which is at the GVC. To receive extra credit, send me a photo of you in front of the library by the time your outline for Essay #3 is due (4/7). Important Deadlines & Dates: Deadlines for all assignments are at 11:59pm. Discussion Posts & Quizzes are due on Thursday/Friday. Essays are generally due on a Sunday, excepting school-mandated deadlines.1/18: Last day for schedule adjustment (Add/drop)1/21: MLK, Jr. Day—School Closed1/27: Essay #1 Proposal1/28:Books purchased deadline (Monday deadline) 2/10:Essay #1 Final2/24:Essay #2 Outline3/6: Essay #2 Final (Wednesday deadline; Essay serves as Midterm)3/11-17: No class – Spring Break3/18-4/12:Current student registration for Fall 20193/24:Library Card due; Essay #3 Proposal4/7: Essay #3 Outline4/12: Last day to drop with a W4/14:Essay #3 Partial Draft5/2: Essay #3 Final; Last day of class (Thursday deadline)5/6:Final Exam Due (Monday deadline)POLICIESNetiquetteRecognize the dignity of every human person. Be respectful, professional, and careful about what you say and how you say it. Be aware of the image of yourself you are projecting online. Use clear writing and good form. Remember that others cannot see your facial expressions or hear the tone of your voice. Your words and manner of expression must clearly indicate your intended meaning. This is particularly important when using humor (e.g., sarcasm may not be apparent by your words alone). Respect the time of others. Keep communication short and to the point. Also, be sure to stay on topic. When disagreeing with others, don’t badmouth others or call them stupid. You may disagree with their ideas but don't mock the person. If you feel the need to disagree, do so respectfully and acknowledge the valid points in your classmate's argument. On message boards, use the subject line appropriately, employing meaningful and succinct labels so that all have an immediate grasp of your contribution. When someone else errs (e.g., a spelling error) and/or does not follow proper Netiquette (e.g., becoming long-winded), think twice about whether it is necessary to correct them. Many times mistakes are unintentional. If you do decide it is important to address an issue, be polite and, if discretion is advised, address the issue privately (e.g., email) rather than in a public way. Avoid using ALL CAPS, especially when you are disagreeing. This is perceived as shouting and is considered rude.Be aware of issues that might arise due to cultural and languages differences. While ethical and political considerations often come into play in the liberal arts, the online classroom is generally an inappropriate place to debate these issues. You may express your opinions on such matters, but you must refrain from arguing with others about theirs.Be careful not to violate the privacy of others. Do not send commercial advertisements or spam to other students, instructors or staff. Before posting a question to the discussion board, check if anyone has asked it already and received a reply. Before asking a question, check the syllabus or search the internet to see if the answer is obvious or easy to find.If you reply to a question from a classmate, make sure your answer is accurate. If you refer to something your classmate said earlier in the discussion, quote just a few key lines from their post so that others won't have to go back and figure out which post you're referring to.Check the most recent comments before you reply to an older comment.Run a spelling and grammar check before posting anything to the discussion board.Late and Missed Assignments: Late work is not accepted. If you miss the due date, the item will no longer be made available to you on Blackboard. However, you may also use 2 coupons (see the last page of the syllabus).Office Hours: I am happy to meet with you during my office hours (see the top of the syllabus). If this does not work, we can arrange to meet on a different day. I teach out of GVC, and live close to RCC, so I can meet you in-person at either location. We can also talk via phone or Zoom. Please feel free to request a meeting outside of class, particularly if you are having trouble grasping the course concepts, or are going through some sort of personal difficulty that is affecting your academic performance. Meeting students for help outside of class time is part of my job, so don’t worry about “bothering” me. Oftentimes, the best students are those that contact me the most.I will generally check my New River email account at least once per day, but if you need help with an urgent matter (i.e., you have a quick question regarding an assignment that is due in the next few hours, have some sort of emergency, etc.), feel free to contact me using my personal email.Special Circumstances: One of the benefits of attending a community college is the tacit understanding that students may have full lives outside of being a student, such as a full-time job, demanding family commitments, etc. If something occurs in your life that prevents you from performing to your highest academic potential, please let me know. These events may include: mental difficulties such as anxiety or depression, illness, the death or serious illness of a close friend or family member, the loss of a job, etc. I will be much more understanding if you let me know about these circumstances than if you simply fail to complete work. Also, keep in mind that we are building a working relationship. If you’re putting forth your best effort, I will be willing to work with you. However, if you always have excuses, I will be less flexible. Extra Credit: Refer to the Library Card section on p. 3. Other opportunities for extra credit may arise throughout the semester, and will be posted to the Announcements section of Blackboard.Plagiarism: Using someone else’s academic property, words, ideas, or work without proper MLA documentation is a very serious offense and will not be tolerated. If you have any questions regarding what is and what is not plagiarism, please contact me. An essay or assignment that contains plagiarism will receive an automatic F.Please note that it is possible to commit self-plagiarism. Self-plagiarism is when a student submits a paper for this course that they submitted for a previous course, or when they build on a former assignment without letting their instructor know ahead of time.Tutoring: Any New River CTC student is eligible for up to three hours of tutoring per class per week by completing an application. Tutoring is by appointment and availability of qualified tutors. Tutoring is not available in all subjects. For more information, please go to: Tutoring through Brainfuse: Brainfuse is delivered through the web and provides students with expert writing assistance, live tutoring, and more. Tutors and students communicate in real-time through the Brainfuse Online Classroom. There is a 24/7 Question Center for students who need a detailed, structured explanation of key concepts or help with an assignment. Students simply submit their questions and receive feedback from the Brainfuse-certified instructor. This can be located under “Tools” in BlackBoard.ADA Statement: Students with documented disabilities are eligible for ADA accommodations if they meet the conditions of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.
