Course Syllabus and Classroom Procedures New Bridge Middle School 8th grade2020 - 2021Welcome to 8th grade at NBMS! We are excited to have you in our classes this year. As we all know, this year will be unlike any other. However, we are going to do all that we can to make it a safe and productive year for each of you. Our goal is to prepare you to be successful in high school and beyond. Each of your teachers is dedicated to helping you meet your full potential.Course Descriptions MACROBUTTON AcceptAllChangesInDoc All classes will follow the North Carolina Standard Course of Study with a focus on the Onslow County Schools Priority Standards. A complete course description for each class can be found in the “Standards” section of teacher pages on the NBMS website. MaterialsStudents should bring all materials from the school supply list to class every day. Punch Cards, Hall Passes, and Student ID Badges are to be held in the student lanyard. Students are to wear the lanyard around his/her neck at all times during the school day. Not wearing the lanyard will result in a card punch.Planners will be provided to students for recording assignments and events. Please check your child’s planner daily.As the school year progresses, please replenish your school supplies as needed. If a situation arises where you are not able to obtain needed materials, please inform your homeroom teacher.Students will NOT be allowed to share materials. Additional MaterialsMath: Students will be issued two textbooks. Both books should be brought to school each day. If a student loses either book, he/she will be required to purchase a replacement. The cost of each book is $20. All students will also need a graphing calculator (TI-84). Students may purchase a graphing calculator or check one out from the media center.Science: a one-subject spiral or composition notebook, safety scissors, and tapeSocial Studies: a pocket folder with prongsPunch CardsThe 8th grade team will use the punch cards to address behaviors that interfere with the safe and civil learning environment that we strive to maintain. They will not be used for academic infractions, such as no homework, no pencil, etc.Students are expected to keep their punch card in the lanyard throughout the school day. If a student’s card is lost, it will be replaced by the homeroom teacher. The consequence for a lost card will be one punch.Punches will be recorded in PowerSchool, including the date, a brief explanation, and name of teacher. Please monitor this information regularly.Consequences for punches –1st, 2nd punch – Warning3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th punch – Warning & Parent Contact7th, 8th, 9th punch – ? day ISS10th, 11th, 12th punch – ISS13th punch & up – referral to administrationClassroom ExpectationsStudents are expected to follow OCS and school rules at all times. The guidelines are outlined in the Bear Matrix.Be preparedEveryone shows respectAttitude mattersRemember your responsibilitiesSafety firstStudents MUST wear their face mask at all times, except when eating/drinking.Students may bring a clear, plastic water bottle. No other beverages will be allowed during class.Student cell phones are to be turned off and placed in book bags before arriving on campus. Phones should remain in book bags until the student leaves campus at the end of the school day. If a cell phone is seen, heard, or used without teacher permission, it will be taken and the student will receive a card punch. Parents may pick up cell phones in the front office.Remote Learning ExpectationsStudents are expected to login every day during their scheduled time for each class. When joining live video calls, please choose an appropriate location that is quiet and non-distracting. Also, students are expected to be dressed in attire that is appropriate for school.When a paper assignment is due on a student’s remote learning day, he/she is expected to take a picture of the completed assignment and submit it to the teacher in Teams. The paper will be collected and assessed on the student’s next face-to-face school day.Academic ExpectationsStudents will be assigned practice daily. When the work is not completed during class, students are expected to finish at home. Assignments will be posted online. Students are expected to record assignments and other important dates in their planner/agenda.All assignments should be labeled with the appropriate heading - name, date, block, and assignment. Late Work Students are expected to turn in assignments when they are due. Those who choose not to will face the following consequences:10% reduction in grade for each day late5 or more days late – maximum possible grade is 50%Late work will not be accepted more than 10 school days after the original due date.If a student is present when work is assigned, but absent on the due date, the assignment is due on the day that he/she returns to school (face-to-face or remote).Work that is in another location when class starts will be counted late. Students will not be allowed to interrupt another class to retrieve their forgotten materials.As stated above, paper assignments that are due on remote days should be submitted via teams. If a picture of the assignment is not submitted in Teams by the due date, the assignment will be counted late.Missed WorkIt is the student’s responsibility to ask for make-up assignments. Assignments must be turned in within three school days of the student’s return to school. Exceptions can be made for extended excused absences. If a quiz or test is missed, the student will need to make arrangements to make it up. Options may include during class, homeroom, or lunch.Please Note: If a child was present when the work was assigned, but is absent on the due date, the assignment is due on the day that he/she returns to school.GradingPowerSchool will be utilized to record students' grades for assignments in a timely manner. Entry of grades may be delayed if a substitute teacher is necessary.Please monitor your child’s progress regularly through the Parent Portal.
