QUESTION

‘Tis the season! It’s festive and exciting…but what is the holiday season all about? What is the most important reason for this season? Actually, it’s about remembering those who might not be as fortunate as you! We are going to remember a group of people who might be easily forgotten this time of year: senior citizens. The holidays can be lonely and isolating for them so we are going to write letters and send care packages. At the conclusion, students will prepare a power point presentation on what they learned about “the reason for the season”.

PLAN

Several steps are needed in order to achieve our goal:

• Divide class into groups of 4 (20 students in the class). Each member of the group will rotate each week as a reporter or photographer to keep notes or take photographs for your power point presentation.

• Research various local agencies to locate senior citizens in need

• Write and send letters to 2 agencies to explain our goal and determine if group has a need and for how many

• Brainstorm fundraising ideas and care package items

• Determine how many care packages needed when agency response is received, select fundraising idea and care package items

• Field trip to local Target to purchase care package items

• Write letters to senior citizens

• Care packages assembled

• Letters and care packages delivered to agencies

• PowerPoint presentations

SCHEDULE [pic]

Week 1 – Assign groups and research agencies

Week 2 & 3 – Select 2 agencies and write letters

– Brainstorm fundraising and care package ideas

- Research cost of care package items

Week 4 – Agency responses are in!

- Determine selected items, cost, and how much money is needed

Week 5 & 6 – Money raised

- Items purchased on field trip

- Letters written

Week 7 – Care packages assembled

- Care packages with letters delivered to agencies!

Week 8 – PowerPoint presentations prepared and presented

PROJECT

Now that we have a plan and a schedule let’s determine our course of action:

1. From the resources below, each group needs to research these agencies and select one agency that will help us pursue our goal. Each group will report back to our class and we will vote on the 2 agencies we will contact.

2. Each group using Microsoft Word will create a letter to send to an agency asking for help in finding senior citizens who are in need. Each group will present their letter to the class and two will be voted on to send to two agencies.

3. Each group using a web graphic organizer will brainstorm fundraising and care package ideas and present their findings to the class for a vote. (It is determined that a bake sale at a PTA meeting will be the fundraiser with everyone bringing in some goodies…with parents assistance! Care package items selected for women are: small lotion, bath gel, tissues, box of tea bags, cookies, small book of puzzles, and a holiday ornament you made in Art class; mens: shaving cream and razor, small lotion, handkerchief, box of tea bags, cookies, small book of puzzles, and a holiday ornament. All will need to be arranged in a holiday basket that will have to be purchased as well. It is also determined that upon response from the agencies we will be able to make 20 packages; 10 men and 10 women.)

4. Each group by using a math spread sheet will determine the approximate cost of making 4 care packages each and report back to the class on their estimate.

5. As a class, you will determine the estimated sales you will need to make at the bake sale to cover your expenses for the care package.

6. It’s the night of the PTA Bake Sale and the whole class has contributed! Our sale is a huge success and we have exceeded our estimated amount. One of our group photographers took lots of photos!

7. It is the day of our field trip to Target. All permission slips are in and a school bus has been arranged. Some helpful parents have volunteered to chaperone and help purchase our items. Another group photographer took pictures of us at Target. We even got a picture with the store manager donating an item for each basket!

8. It’s the day we assemble our baskets! Each group personalizes their 4 care packages using items brought from home and/or designed with class materials.

9. It is also letter writing week! Each member of the group writes one letter to a senior citizen using Microsoft Word. Introduce yourself and your class, explain our project and what you learned, and why it is important. Use clip art, and any special formatting to make it unique and creative.

10. DELIVERY DAY! Mrs. Whitener and a parent volunteer will deliver the care packages to our agencies!

11. The last step of our journey is for each group to create a PowerPoint presentation using our reporter’s note and photographer’s photos as our resources. WOW! Don’t you feel proud of yourself, both as individuals and as a group? Tell us about your group’s experiences and what the real REASON FOR THE SEASON is!

MULTIMEDIA PRESENTATION AND EVALUATION

Your final task is to create a PowerPoint presentation with your group. You will create a presentation using your notes and photographs from our weeks spent on the project. You will have one week to prepare the presentation and then we will present them to the entire fifth grade class.

Your presentation should include the following:

• A minimum of 10 slides in your PowerPoint presentation

• A title slide with all names from your group

• Pictures and steps from our project

• A conclusion slide that tells us what you learned about The Reason for the Season.

• A credits and reference slide that were used (ex. The agency that provided our senior citizen list!)
