1. Committee approved Minutes #2, September 25, 2017.

2. Committee deferred the request from the Department of Communication and Journalism to add the following new program:

4+1 Bachelor’s to Master’s Degree in Communication

3. Committee approved the request from the Department of Chemistry to change the prerequisites of the following courses:

CHM 1430 – Chemical Principles (4)

Prerequisite(s): Score of 20 22 or higher on ACT mathematics exam or score of 510 550 or higher on SAT mathematics exam; or MTH 0662 or equivalent; or placement above MTH 0662.

CHM 1440 – General Chemistry I (4)

Prerequisite(s): Score of 20 22 or higher on ACT mathematics exam or score of 510 550 or higher on SAT mathematics exam; or MTH 0662 or equivalent; or placement above MTH 0662. Corequisite(s): CHM 1470.

4. Committee deferred the request from the Department of English to add the following new courses:

CW 3800 Editing and Publishing a Literary Journal (4)

Readings in the history and practice of literary journal publishing with practical application. Students produce one issue of OU’s literary journal, the Oakland Arts Review, as well as analytical papers and other writings related to journal production.

Prerequisite: WRT 1060 or equivalent with a grade of 2.0 or higher.

CW 4950 Internship (4)

Practical experience in appropriate work position at an approved site, correlated with directed study assignments. In the semester prior to enrollment, the student will plan the internship in conjunction with the instructor and with the approval of the department chair. Final analytical paper required. May be repeated once in a different setting for elective credit only. (Formerly ENG 491).

Prerequisites: 16 credits in English, of which at least 8 must be at the 3003-4000 level, and permission of the instructor and department chair.

CW 4996 Independent Study (4)

A proposed course of study to be submitted to the prospective instructor in the semester before the independent study is to be taken. Only eight credits of CW 4996 (or ENG 499) may apply toward the minor. May be elected on an S/U basis. (Formerly ENG 499).

Prerequisites: Four courses in English or creative writing and permission of instructor.

5. Committee deferred the request from the Department of English to add the following new courses:

CIN 3650 Essay Filmmaking (4)

Study of different forms of the essay film, a genre that investigates ideas and challenges ways of thinking, and production of original essay films.

Prerequisite(s): (CIN 1600 or CIN 165) and (CIN 2150 or CIN 252).

CIN 3660 Short Form Filmmaking (4)

Through critical analysis, development of an understanding of single and multi-camera short form, non-theatrical film production and creation of original projects.

Prerequisite(s): CIN 2600 or CIN 265.

6. Committee deferred the request from the Department of Mathematics and Statistics to add the following new courses:

MTH 1331 College Algebra (4)

Functions, roots of polynomials, rational, exponential and logarithmic functions. Students cannot receive credit for both MTH 1441 (or MTh 141) and MTH 1331.

Prerequisite(s): MTH 0662 (or MTH 062) with a grade of 2.0 or higher or placement.

MTH 1332 Trigonometry (4)

Trigonometric functions (including graphs, identities, inverse functions, equations and applications); complex numbers, analytic geometry and conic sections. Students cannot receive credit for both MTH 1441 (or MTH 141) and MTH 1332. Prerequisite: MTH 1331 with a grade of 2.0 or higher or placement.

7. Committee deferred the request from the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures to add the following new courses:

IT 3140 Italian Grammar Review (4)

Review of Italian grammar through a variety of approaches, such as reading, translation, and composition. Conducted in Italian.

Prerequisite: IT 2150.

IT 3160 Italian Conversation and Composition (4)

Provides a transition between the carefully structured activities of other intermediate courses and free manipulation of spoken and written language. Conducted in Italian. Prerequisite: IT 2150.

IT 3510 Italian Civilization (4)

Historical approach to Italian culture and civilization with emphasis on geography, politics, arts, and sociology. Conducted in English and Italian. No text required. Prerequisite: IT 2150.

IT 3570 Italian Business Communication (4)

Historical approach to Italian culture and civilization with emphasis on geography, politics, arts, and sociology. Conducted in English and Italian. No text required.

Prerequisite: IT 2150.

8. Committee approved the request from the Department of Music, Theatre and Dance to add the following new courses:

10. Committee deferred the request from the Department of Physics to change the descriptions of the following

courses:

PHY 1010 – General Physics I (4)

Mechanics, heat, mechanical waves and sound. Calculus is not required. (Formerly PHY

101). (PHY 101 or PHY 1010) and (PHY 110 or PHY 1100) together satisfy the university

general education requirement in the natural science and technology knowledge

exploration area. (PHY 101 or PHY 1010) alone does not satisfy this general education

requirement.

Prerequisite(s): Score of 20 22 or higher on ACT mathematics exam or 550 or higher on

SAT mathematics exam; or (MTH 062 or MTH 0662) or equivalent, or placement above

the knowledge applications integration area. Prerequisite for knowledge applications

integration: completion of general education requirement in natural science and

technology knowledge exploration area. (Formerly PHY 102). Concomitant attendance of

PHY 1110 Lab is strongly recommended.

Prerequisite(s): (PHY 101 or PHY 1010) or (PHY 151 or PHY 1510).

Corequisite: (PHY 111 or PHY 1110).

PHY 1100 – General Physics Lab I (1)

Elementary experiments in mechanics, thermodynamics, and waves. (Formerly PHY

110). (PHY 110 or PHY 1100) together with (PHY 101 or PHY 1010) or (PHY 151 or

PHY 1510) satisfy the university general education requirement in the natural science

and technology exploration knowledge area. Concomitant attendance of PHY 1010 or

PHY 1510 lecture is strongly recommended. May be taken with permission by students

who have completed (PHY 108 or PHY 1080) or (PHY 161 or PHY 1610). (Formerly

PHY 110).

PHY 1110 – General Physics Lab II (1)

Elementary experiments in electricity and magnetism, optics, and modern physics.

(PHY 109 or PHY 1090) or (PHY 162 or PHY 1620). (Formerly PHY 111).

PHY 1510 – Introductory Physics I (4)

Classical mechanics and thermodynamics. For science, mathematics and engineering

students. (Formerly PHY 151). (PHY 151 or PHY 1510) and (PHY 110 or PHY 1100)

together satisfy the university general education requirement in the natural science and

technology knowledge exploration area. (PHY 151 or PHY 1510) alone does not satisfy

this general education requirement.

Prerequisite(s): (MTH 154 or MTH 1554) recommended. Score of 20 22 or higher on

knowledge applications integration area. Prerequisite for knowledge applications

integration: completion of general education requirement in natural science and

technology knowledge exploration area. (Formerly PHY 152). Concomitant attendance of

PHY 1110 Lab is strongly recommended.

Prerequisite(s): (PHY 151 or PHY 1510); (MTH 155 or MTH 1555) recommended.

Corequisite: (PHY 111 or PHY 1110).

11. Committee approved the request from the Department of Political Science to change the

description of the following course:

PS 3410 African Politics (4)

Examination of politics of selected African states. Primary focus is on the evolution of political institutions since independence. The impact of indigenous traditions and the colonial heritage on that evolution is assessed. Individual, groups and institutions involved in the political process are studied. Examination of politics within nations in Africa. Emphasis placed on the evolution of political institutions since independence, along with contemporary challenges of democratization and development. A comparative point of view is emphasized.

12. Committee approved the request from the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, Social Work

and Criminal Justice to add the following new course:

AN 3221 The Human Skeleton (4)

Covers aspects of anatomy, physiology, variability, and health issues related to the human

skeleton that may be applicable to a variety of social science settings. Topics include the

determination of characteristics such as age and sex from skeletal remains; the

evolutionary costs and benefits of skeletal changes; growth, development and aging of the

skeleton; and the prevalence of bone disease in various populations.
