1. Identification and definition of the element

For Criterion R.1, the States shall demonstrate that ‘the element constitutes intangible cultural heritage as defined in Article 2 of

the Convention’.

Tick one or more boxes to identify the domain(s) of intangible cultural heritage manifested by the element, which might include one or

more of the domains identified in Article 2.2 of the Convention. If you tick ‘others’, specify the domain(s) in brackets.

oral traditions and expressions, including language as a vehicle of the intangible cultural heritage

performing arts

social practices, rituals and festive events

knowledge and practices concerning nature and the universe

traditional craftsmanship

other(s) (                                             )

This section should address all the significant features of the element as it exists at present.

The Committee should receive sufficient information to determine:

that the element is among the ‘practices, representations, expressions, knowledge, skills — as well as the instruments, objects,

artefacts and cultural spaces associated therewith —’;

‘that communities, groups and, in some cases, individuals recognize [it] as part of their cultural heritage’;

that it is being ‘transmitted from generation to generation, [and] is constantly recreated by communities and groups in response to

their environment, their interaction with nature and their history’;

that it provides communities and groups involved with ‘a sense of identity and continuity’; and

that it is not incompatible with ‘existing international human rights instruments as well as with the requirements of mutual respect

among communities, groups and individuals, and of sustainable development’.

Overly technical descriptions should be avoided and submitting States should keep in mind that this section must explain the element

to readers who have no prior knowledge or direct experience of it. Nomination files need not address in detail the history of the

element, or its origin or antiquity.

Provide a brief summary description of the element that can introduce it to readers who have never seen or experienced it.

Not fewer than 150 or more than250 words

Cante Alentejano is a genre of traditional polyphonic singing in two parts with no accompanying instruments. A vast repertoire of

traditional poetry (modas) is set to existing or newly created melodies (estilos). Men’s choral groups predominate, however, there is

an increasing number of women’s, mixed and children’s groups. Consisting of up to 30 members, voices in each choral group are arranged

in three roles: ponto, alto and baixos (chorus). The ponto, in the lower range, starts the singing followed by the alto, a voice in

the higher range that duplicates the melody a third or a tenth above the ponto, often adding ornaments. Following the alto’s brief

solo section, or taking over from the ponto, the entire choral group sings the remaining stanzas of the moda in parallel thirds. The

alto is the guiding voice being heard above the group. Singers stand in close physical proximity and are deeply engaged in emotionally

intense unity of voices. Cante is characterized by its melodies, lyrics and vocal style. Extant documentation going back over one

hundred years, attests to the stability of its melodic features. At the same time, new lyrics and melodies have been created,

reflecting changes in the cultural and social context, while maintaining traditional themes referring to life in the rural world,

nature, love, motherhood and religion. Regional vocabulary and local accent are also essential ingredients in the interpretation of

cante. This manifestation is recognized both within and outside the region as the main marker of Alentejo’s identity.

Who are the bearers and practitioners of the element? Are there any specific roles or categories of persons with special

responsibilities for the practice and transmission of the element? If yes, who are they and what are their responsibilities?

Not fewer than 150 or more than250 words

Men and women from the region of southern and central Alentejo are bearers of cante that they transmit to children and youth within

the family context, as well as in school and local cultural associations. Cante is mostly practiced by choral groups whose members

engage in a wide variety of occupations within the primary, secondary and tertiary sectors. These groups play a central role in the

transmission of this expressive practice to new generations as well as in its dissemination throughout the region, the country and

abroad. The ponto and the alto play a leading role in the singing. Either of them, or, alternatively, another tradition bearer leads

the group, training the singers, selecting and transmitting the repertoire, conducting rehearsals and performances. This role of

choral master was recently formalized, receiving public recognition and the title of mestre. Local municipalities in collaboration

with primary schools and cultural associations concerned with the continuity of cante, support several mestres to train and

disseminate cante among children and young people throughout the region.

How are the knowledge and skills related to the element transmitted today?

Not fewer than 150 or more than250 words

Cante is an oral tradition that was primarily transmitted through the family and community, in the context of agricultural work,

private social gatherings, in fiestas and other rituals, and in taverns, a central space for men’s sociability. With the rise of the

choral movement since the mid twentieth century, choral groups gained prominence as central institutions for the practice and

transmission of cante. In fact, the choral movement, comprising over 130 groups, strongly supported both financially and logistically

by Municipalities throughout Alentejo and in the Metropolitan Area of Lisbon, sustains the current activities of cante and assures its

continuity. The transmission of knowledge and skills is a major concern of cante bearers, cultural associations and other institutions

throughout Alentejo and in the entire country. Choral group rehearsals are the main contexts for learning and transmitting cante to

young practitioners. In addition to older cante bearers, sound recordings going back to the 1950s have been used as sources for

learning the performance styles of singers and choral groups that are considered traditional. Song-books have also been used as

sources for the poetry. Several municipalities from Southern Alentejo have been sponsoring optional extra-curricular cante classes

taught by choral masters, other tradition bearers, and music teachers from different generations for children, especially in the first

cycle of official education. Several choral groups are also involved in dissemination cante in schools. In addition, free cante

schools and workshops, are freely offered or all age groups by several choral groups and associations in their headquarters.

What social and cultural functions and meanings does the element have today for its community?

Not fewer than 150 or more than250 words

Cante is a fundamental aspect of social life throughout Alentejano communities. It permeates social gatherings in both public and

private spaces, including homes, parks, streets, taverns, festivities and other ritual events. A new space for cante has also been

created in the internet that today represents a fundamental medium for communication and sociability among many cante practitioners,

contributing to reinforcing the emotional community that has been built through cante. For its practitioners and aficionados, cante

embodies a strong sense of identity and belonging to its region of origin. It is also an important vehicle for reinforcing dialogue

between different generations, genders, as well as individuals with different economic, professional and academic backgrounds,

contributing to social cohesion and to regional and local development. Cante brought many women to the public space, through women’s

and children’s groups, through their activities in cante associations and through digital platforms. Outside Alentejo, cante is one of

the major expressive modes that help maintain a strong connection between migrants and their region of origin, providing them with a

context for sociability, while contributing to maintaining local dialects, an important aspect in the cante tradition. In short, cante

empowers men and women to consolidate their communities, express their emotions, and resist isolation and oblivion for older tradition

bearers.

Is there any part of the element that is not compatible with existing international human rights instruments or with the requirement

of mutual respect among communities, groups and individuals, or with sustainable development?

Not fewer than 150 or more than250 words

None of the aspects of the element are incompatible neither with international human rights instruments, nor with the principle of

mutual respect among different groups, communities or individuals. The practice of cante has embraced new social groups, encompassing

people from all ages, genders, professions and social backgrounds, including immigrants. Furthermore, as a live cultural practice

that has evolved in a context of social and economic change, it is an important tool for sustainable development, especially in

Alentejo. In fact, cante is integrated within the programs for sustainable development in some of the Municipalities in Alentejo,

especially in sectors such as tourism, as well as cultural and heritage industries. These programs aim at promoting the preservation

and dissemination of local practices of cante, the creation of new performance spaces for cante, the cooperation among cante

practitioners, as well as the promotion of cante as a local and regional identity marker, as an effective medium for cultivating

creativity, for reinforcing social cohesion, cultural diversity and cooperation between groups and communities. These ideals also

guide the work of local cante associations like MODA, Confraria do Cante and Cortiçol that work with cante groups and with the

Municipalities in which they are based. However, these efforts are still quite incipient and need to be developed further.

2. Contribution to ensuring visibility and awareness and

to encouraging dialogue

For Criterion R.2, the States shall demonstrate that ‘Inscription of the element will contribute to ensuring visibility and awareness

of the significance of the intangible cultural heritage and to encouraging dialogue, thus reflecting cultural diversity worldwide and

testifying to human creativity’.

How can inscription of the element on the Representative List contribute to the visibility of the intangible cultural heritage in

general and raise awareness of its importance at the local, national and international levels?

Not fewer than 100 or more than 150 words

The inclusion of cante in the Representative List will also help raise awareness of the importance of Intangible Cultural Heritage as

a an identity marker and as a tool that can contribute to sustainable development. It will also increase the visibility of traditional

multi-part singing in Portugal, the Mediterranean, Europe and the World.

At the local and national levels, it will raise the awareness and appreciation of this tradition and motivate its support and the

creation of the appropriate conditions for its continuity and transmission among different generations. At the international level, it

will help disseminate an important manifestation of Portuguese intangible cultural heritage and enhance the possibilities to

creatively interact with polyphonic traditions in other parts of the world. It will also reinforce the importance of cante in the

safeguarding of cultural diversity in a contemporary society that is increasingly globalized.

How can inscription encourage dialogue among communities, groups and individuals?

Not to exceed 150 words

The inscription of cante in the representative list will boost self-esteem and pride of individual tradition-bearers, choral groups

and the communities involved in this expressive mode. It will also strengthen the cohesion among local tradition bearers and choral

groups, and foster the collaboration of individuals, choral groups, institutions, academic researchers and the general public in

safeguarding and reinforcing intangible cultural heritage. It will also help raise the interest of young people in their cultural

heritage and identity.

How can inscription promote respect for cultural diversity and human creativity?

Not fewer than 100 or more than 150 words

Cante is a little known tradition outside its communities. The inscription will provide cante with national and international

visibility. It will inspire a renewed interest in its practice and enhance appreciation and dialogue across cultural differences in

both regional and generational terms. It will also contribute to safeguarding a polyphonic tradition that is part of a world-wide

phenomenon that is increasingly threatened. The inscription will help foster dialogue between communities with similar polyphonic

traditions in other parts of the world, some of which are included in UNESCO’s representative list. Cante has already inspired some

composers outside this domain to create new works or to make arrangements thereof. The inscription will help to further creativity

both by practitioners, as well as by composers in other musical domains. In short, the inscription of cante will help safeguard this

intangible cultural heritage, promoting cultural diversity, and human creativity within an increasingly globalized world.

3. Safeguarding measures

For Criterion R.3, the States shall demonstrate that ‘safeguarding measures are elaborated that may protect and promote the element’.

3.a. Past and current efforts to safeguard the element

How is the viability of the element being ensured by the concerned communities, groups or, if applicable, individuals? What past and

current initiatives have they taken in this regard?

Not fewer than 150 or more than 250 words

Choral groups organized, as independent voluntary associations, have ensured the viability of the element, contributing to its

sustainability. They play a central role in safeguarding and disseminating cante both within and outside their communities through

regular performances, workshops, and cante schools for children and young people. Individual tradition-bearers have also been nuclear,

especially in transmitting knowledge about cante and its singing style. A few children’s groups were founded and supported by

established groups. In order to stimulate the interest of young people in the practice, since the last decade several local

authorities in collaboration with the administration of local schools have been supporting cante classes at all primary schools under

their jurisdiction. A children’s choral group has also been formed in a school in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area. The present

inscription process and the safeguarding plan constitute an opportunity to promote collaboration among local, regional national and

international institutions and to converge strategies and resources.

Tick one or more boxes to identify the safeguarding measures that have been and are currently being taken by the communities, groups

or individuals concerned:

transmission, particularly through formal and non-formal education

identification, documentation, research

preservation, protection

promotion, enhancement

revitalization

How have the concerned States Parties safeguarded the element? Specify external or internal constraints, such as limited resources.

What are its past and current efforts in this regard?

Not fewer than 150 or more than 250 words

Local, regional and central governments have been the main sponsors of choral groups, providing them with financial and logistical

support for rehearsals, festivals, performances, music recordings, transportation, and provide headquarters, etc. They have also

supported research, publications and conferences on cante. Cante integrates the cultural policy of Municipalities throughout central

and southern Alentejo and the Metropolitan Area of Lisbon. In order to obtain support, most groups have to present an annual plan of

activities. A significant effort is now being conducted by the various institutions and communities involved in cante toward a

safeguarding plan to be carried out jointly by all those involved. Since 2005, Cante associations have also played an important role

in promoting the recognition of cante as an intangible cultural heritage of Municipal interest, debating and approving resolutions in

that respect by most Municipal governing entities in Southern and Central Alentejo as well as in the Metropolitan Area of Lisbon.

These efforts continue up to the present. Despite the priority that has been given to the support to cante, an element that has been

privileged among many other expressions of intangible cultural heritage as well as other cultural activities in the region of

Alentejo, the support given to the universe of cante needs reinforcement in order to assure the continuity of groups and the

transmission of cante to future generations.

Tick one or more boxes to identify the safeguarding measures that have been and are currently being taken by the State(s) Party(ies)

with regard to the element:

transmission, particularly through formal and non-formal education

identification, documentation, research

preservation, protection

promotion, enhancement

revitalization

3.b. Safeguarding measures proposed

This section should identify and describe safeguarding measures that will be implemented, especially those intended to protect and

promote the element.

What measures are proposed to help to ensure that the element’s viability is not jeopardized in the future, especially as an

unintended result of inscription and the resulting visibility and public attention?

Not fewer than 500 or more than 750 words

1. INSTITUTIONAL NETWORKING

Objectives:

Creating a platform that facilitates networking among institutions that are concerned with cante, including groups, associations,

cultural institutions, research centres, on the regional, national and international levels.

Heritage as well as other forms of multi-part singing in the south of Portugal.

ii. Developing an awareness of the value of cante, especially among young people, within and outside Alentejo.

iii. Promoting the recognition of Cante as an element of cultural significance by municipal authorities of Alentejo and other areas

where there are cante groups, namely in the Metropolitan Area of Lisbon, and guaranteeing their commitment toward its safeguarding.

iv. Identifying cante bearers and providing them with conditions that guarantee the documentation and transmission of their know-how.

v. Proposing ethical principles that should guide the relationship between cante practitioners and groups, cultural politicians,

promoters, researchers and institutions.

vi. Safeguarding intellectual property.

Timeline: 2013 - 2015

3. TRANSMISSION AND SUSTAINABILITY

Objectives: to promote the transmission of cante especially among young people and to implement a strategy that guarantees its

sustainability and continuity.

Actions:

Implementing a common and global promotional strategy for cante by municipal authorities, cante groups and other institutions

concerned with cante.

Organizing joint meetings and other forums to coordinate efforts that guarantee the element’s sustainability.

Promoting collaboration and performances with the three kinds of formally structured groups that are fundamental in village festivals

in Alentejo (amateur wind bands, folk dance groups and choral groups), improvised sung poetry, and other elements of intangible

heritage in the region.

Creating a strategy to strengthen cante performance in public spaces (taverns, parks), reinforcing its use as a medium for recreation

and sociability and reviving its presence in sacred and secular festivals.

Supporting the formal and informal learning of traditional forms of cante by expanding the “Cante at school” (Cante nas Escolas)

educational program and creating cante schools within choral groups, among other initiatives.

Promoting research on cante in Portugal and abroad.

Promoting inter-cultural dialogue through cante by creating performance opportunities joining multi-part singing groups from

Mediterranean, Europe, and other parts of the world.

Transforming the headquarters of choral groups into “Casas do Cante” promoting the safeguarding of cante.

Timeline: 2013 - 2015

4. COMMUNICATION AND INFORMATION

Objectives: to promote and manage communication and information on cante through different media including digital means, performances

and publishing, so as to create channels and networks between cante bearers, other interested parties as well as the general public.

Actions:

Implementing a publishing program including monographs on cante, critical editions of primary sources, historical recordings, etc.

Creating a record label for cante that will enable groups to record and disseminate their repertoire.

Creating a festival circuit for cante and other choral festivals.

Developing a digital platform through which information on cante can be shared between cante bearers, researchers and the general

public.

Creating a Virtual Museum for Cante.

Creating an itinerant exhibition on Cante.

Providing online access to information about Cante events using QR-code.

Promoting cante through online social networks.

Timeline: 2013 – 2016

How will the States Parties concerned support the implementation of the proposed safeguarding measures?

Not fewer than 150 or more than 250 words

Official and other public institutions not only support the nomination, but are also engaged in the safeguarding plan. Municipal

authorities are contributing by allocating budgets to support cante and national institutions have agreed to include cante-related

activities in their annual programmes.

Collaboration protocols were signed with several institutions (State Publishing House, the National Library, the Museum of Cinema, the

Archives General-Directorate, the Museum of Portuguese Music and university-based research institutes) facilitating the compilation of

bibliography, the inventorying of documentation on cante in sound, film and photo archives, which will enrich the Casa do Cante and

other institutions.

Cultural events and conferences promoting cante will be organized with full cooperation of the Alentejo regional tourism agency, the

Portuguese Cinematheque, Universities, the National Cultural Centre, the Alentejo Regional Directorate for Culture, the São Carlos

National Theatre, the Foundation for Modern Art, among others.

Finally, protocols for the media promotion of Cante were signed with Radio Renascença (the national radio station with the largest

network) and RTP (the Portuguese public television channel).

How have communities, groups or individuals been involved in planning the proposed safeguarding measures and how will they be involved

in their implementation?

Not fewer than 150 or more than 250 words

Since the beginning of the preparation of the Cante nomination form, the concerned communities, groups and individuals have engaged

actively in the planning of the safeguarding measures proposed. Various events were organized, such as workshops, seminars, meetings,

debates and interviews not only by the Nomination organization team but also by the choral groups’ associations and by individual

choral groups. The community was highly engaged in all of these events. The proposed safeguarding measures reflect the Cante

community’s vision. Their implementation will take place in close cooperation with Cante practitioners and older tradition bearers

including key individuals, performance groups and associations, many of whom were involved in the conception of the safeguarding

measures. These agents will participate in performances; debates about the history, the current state of Cante and its future;

documentation through archival and field research; educational programs; transmission; dissemination through the preparation of

expositions and the creation of new performance spaces and events. Cante tradition bearers will also contribute to the configuration

of the online archive of Cante recordings, providing indispensible data on repertoires, styles, performance groups and occasions.

3.c. Competent body(ies) involved in safeguarding

4. Community participation and consent in the nomination process

For Criterion R.4, the States shall demonstrate that ‘the element has been nominated following the widest possible participation of the

community, group or, if applicable, individuals concerned and with their free, prior and informed consent’.

4.a. Participation of communities, groups and individuals concerned in the nomination process

Describe how the community, group or, if applicable, individuals concerned have participated actively in preparing and elaborating the

nomination at all stages.

States Parties are encouraged to prepare nominations with the participation of a wide variety of all concerned parties, including where

appropriate local and regional governments, communities, NGOs, research institutes, centres of expertise and others.

Not fewer than 300 or more than 500 words

With the assistance of the two major associations, MODA and Confraria do Cante Alentejano, as well as the Alentejo regional tourism agency and

the Municipality of Serpa; choral groups were invited to an initial meeting in preparation of the nomination in the Casa do Alentejo, in

Lisbon. Representatives from over sixty groups attended the meeting. Following a presentation about the nomination and the importance of the

inscription of the element in the representative list, the representatives of the groups discussed the benefits of the nomination, the

responsibilities of Cante bearers, the problems they face and the ways of overcoming them, and expressed their views about the safeguarding

measures. Groups from different locales set aside their traditional rivalries and spontaneously sang together. The contributions of the groups

and other tradition bearers constituted the basis for the formulation of the nomination as well as the safeguarding measures proposed.

All through the nomination process, the Safeguarding Plan, as well as concrete measures and actions were fully discussed with the choral

groups’ representatives and in meetings organized by them, such as the Barreiro meeting in February 25, 2012, and the Amadora meeting on March

17, 2012, and Beja (Polytechnic Institute) on June16, 2012. Several local groups, as well as many scholars and people interested in this

cultural element, were present at both meetings.

Municipalities where coral groups are active were invited to formally support the nomination and officially declare Cante Alentejano as an

element of local cultural interest. This involvement is especially important because choral groups have a strong financial and logistic

dependence on municipal authorities. At a meeting in Serpa on March 3, 2012 several local authorities from Southern and Central Alentejo

discussed the nomination and future safeguarding measures.

The Moda association in which over 50 choral groups are affiliated devoted a substantial part of several of its meetings in 2012 and 2013 to

the discussion of the nomination and the safeguarding plan. The Confraria do Cante in which 30 choral groups are affiliated also discussed the

nomination in several of its meetings. The ideas that were discussed are reflected in this document.

Other important supporting institutions are associations of Alentejo migrants in the Lisbon metropolitan area and abroad. Most choral groups

are affiliated with such organizations. Their support and commitment are important to both the groups and this nomination aas well as its

safeguarding measures. In fact, the meeting of choral groups took place in Casa do Alentejo, the central association of migrants from Alentejo,

in Lisbon.

Protocols were signed with university research units such as INET-MD (ethnomusicology) of the Universidade Nova (Lisbon), CIDEHUS (history,

cultures and societies) of the University of Évora. Other protocols were established with public and private institutions relevant to Cante,

such as museums and the National Library of Portugal.

Cante communities, associations and other institutions concerned with the element continued their involvement in the preparation of the

application and the elaboration of the safeguarding plan.

4.b. Free, prior and informed consent to the nomination

The free, prior and informed consent to the nomination of the element from the community, group or, if applicable, individuals concerned may be

demonstrated through written or recorded concurrence, or through other means, according to the legal regimens of the State Party and the

infinite variety of communities and groups concerned. The Committee will welcome a broad range of demonstrations or attestations of community

consent in preference to standard or uniform declarations. Evidence of free, prior and informed consent shall be provided in one of the working

languages of the Committee (English or French), as well as the language of the community concerned if its members use languages other than

English or French

Attach to the nomination form information showing such consent and indicate below what documents you are providing and what form they take.

Not fewer than 150 or more than 250 words

In order to demonstrate the support of the communities and groups concerned with Cante, different types of attestations of consent were signed

by choral groups, individual practitioners, municipalities, parish councils and associations of migrants from Alentejo. In addition, public and

private institutions demonstrated their support by signing support declarations or collaboration protocols. The English translation of standard

versions of each of these attestations and the signed originals are attached.

The attestations of consent supporting the application for the inscription of Cante in the representative list of intangible Cultural Heritage

of the Humanity reflect not only the support of the choral movement in Alentejo and among migrants from the region in the Lisbon Metropolitan

area, but also the expectations that tradition bearers have, collectively and individually, concerning the positive impact of this inscription

on Cante, especially the valorisation and dissemination of this tradition both nationally and internationally and the possibility of receiving

support from Municipalities and the central Government for the implementation of the proposed safeguarding measures.

4.c. Respect for customary practices governing access to the element

Access to certain specific aspects of intangible cultural heritage or to information about it is sometimes restricted by customary practices

enacted and conducted by the communities in order, for example, to maintain the secrecy of certain knowledge. If such practices exist,

demonstrate that inscription of the element and implementation of the safeguarding measures would fully respect such customary practices

governing access to specific aspects of such heritage (cf. Article 13 of the Convention). Describe any specific measures that might need to be

taken to ensure such respect.

If no such practices exist, please provide a clear statement that there are no customary practices governing access to the element in at least

50 words

Not fewer than 50 or more than 250 words

Cante Alentejano does not maintain any secret knowledge. All its contents, both lyrics and melodies, are open and freely available to all.

Much of it was documented in sound recordings, song-books and other publications. In fact, there is a copious bibliography and discography of

cante. Digital platforms also provide free and wide access to many aspects of cante and its repertoire.

4.d. Concerned community organization(s) or representative(s)

Provide the name, address and other contact information of community organizations or representatives, or other non-governmental

organizations, that are concerned with the element such as associations, organizations, clubs, guilds, steering committees, etc.

5. Inclusion of the element in an inventory

For Criterion R.5, the States shall demonstrate that ‘the element is included in an inventory of the intangible cultural heritage present in

the territory(ies) of the submitting State(s) Party(ies), as defined in Articles 11 and 12 of the Convention’.

Indicate below when the element has been included in the inventory, its reference and identify the inventory in which the element has been

included and the office, agency, organization or body responsible for maintaining that inventory. Demonstrate below that the inventory has been

drawn up in conformity with the Convention, in particular Article 11(b) that stipulates that intangible cultural heritage shall be identified

and defined ‘with the participation of communities, groups and relevant non-governmental organizations’ and Article 12 requiring that

inventories be regularly updated.

The nominated element’s inclusion in an inventory should not in any way imply or require that the inventory(ies) should have been completed

prior to nomination. Rather, a submitting State Party may be in the process of completing or updating one or more inventories, but has already

duly included the nominated element on an inventory-in-progress.

Documentary evidence shall also be provided in an annex demonstrating that the nominated element is included in an inventory of the intangible

cultural heritage present in the territory(ies) of the submitting State(s) Party(ies), as defined in Articles 11 and 12 of the Convention; such

evidence may take the form of a functioning hyperlink through which such an inventory may be accessed. Not fewer than 150 or more than 250 words

Cante is registered in the official data base of Casa do Cante (casadocante.pt) and in the data base of Portuguese Intangible Cultural

Heritage Memoriamedia (), where it can be searched in the entry cante alentejano. In addition, the registration of

Cante Alentejano in the National Inventory of the Portuguese Intangible Cultural Heritage is currently in process. The Inventory is maintained

by the Divisão do Património Móvel, Imóvel e Imaterial of the Direcção Geral do Património Cultural according to the rules of the Convention

for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (UNESCO, 2003) and regulated, at the national level, by the Decree-Law no. 139/2009 of

15 June, and the Administrative Rule No. 196/2019 of 9 April, referring to the implementation of the National Inventory.

Furthermore, Cante Alentejano has been officially declared as Intangible Cultural Heritage of municipal interest in most municipalities of

Alentejo (Almodôvar, Alvito, Barrancos, Borba, Cuba, Castro Verde, Ferreira do Alentejo, Grândola, Moura, Mourão, Odemira, Ourique, Reguengos

de Monsaraz, Serpa, Vidigueira, among others) and in Setúbal and Amadora in the metropolitan area of Lisbon.

In the preparation of this inscription, choral groups were involved in a process of consultation regarding the definitions of Cante, the

description of its distinctive features and the identification of its representative institutions.
