A Stitch in Time - That English Teacher

Literary Lesson Learned

Internet Research and Multimedia Lessons on Literary Time Periods

In order to better understand the literature we will be reading in class, and help to prepare you for the texts you will encounter on the AP Exam, it is important to have a basic familiarity with the history of the world and of literary trends. Although lecture is one format in which this information can be passed along, it is more interesting, and more relevant, if all of us take an active role in obtaining this knowledge. To this end, here is a project that will allow us all to learn together and will count as a major project grade for the group and a major paper grade individually. It will take the shape of a lesson plan that your group will teach to the class (including an assessment) and individual record of your own participation. You will need to work in groups since the project is of a vast scope.

The periods that we will study are:

Ancient/Classical

Renaissance 1500-1660

Neoclassical/Age of Reason 1660-1800

Romantic 1800-1850

Victorian 1840-1900

Modern 1900-1950

Postmodern/Contemporary 1950-present

There are several stages and requirements for this project: research, presentation development, individual findings paper. Specifics and due dates are TBA.

Using the most reliable and accurate information from reliable sources, you will then start compiling a complete overview of your time period. This overview should include each of the following components and their effects on the literature of the time:

Art/music

Politics

Religion

Science/inventions

Economics

Social reforms

Major historical events

In discussing the literature, be sure to include important authors, their works, major stylistic trends, themes, etc.

Once you have this information compiled, you will create and present a multimedia

presentation using Microsoft™ PowerPoint®, Prezi, or other electronic format. You and your partners will be given 45 minutes to teach your lesson. If you need handouts prepared, please give them to me a day in advance, so I can copy them for you.
