HISTORICAL TIMELINES of MARINE SCIENCE

DIRECTION SHEET

1. Using a metric ruler, draw a straight line the strip of paper with the line being centered and drawn in the “Landscape” format.

2. At the top of the paper (above the line) write the title, “Historical Timelines of Marine Science.”

3. On the back of the paper write your name and period number, leave a little space, and then make a legend that states the following:

1 mm = 10 years

1 cm = 100 years

1 dm = 1000 years

*Remember that there are 10 mm in 1 cm and there are 10 cm in 1 dm.

4. Make a small tick mark on the left end of the line and label it as 1800 B.C.

5. Make another tick mark 8 cm to the right of the left tick mark and label it as 1000 B.C.

6. Make another tick mark 10 cm further to the right and label it as 0.

7. Make another tick mark 10 cm further to the right and label it as 1000 A.D.

8. Make a fifth tick mark 7 cm further to the right and label it as 1700 A.D.

9. Below the line on the left side of the paper write the heading, “Historical Events in Marine Science.”

10. On the right side of the paper at the same height as this heading write the heading, “Other Historical Events.” These should be identified by different colors or writing styles.

11. Below this heading on the left, number 1-10 while leaving enough space to identify and write historical events.

12. Under the “Other Historical Events” heading number 1-10 and leave enough space for writing there too.

Make a legend that states the following:

1 mm = 1 year

1 cm = 10 years

1 dm = 100 years

13. Make a tick mark on the left end of the line and label it as 1700 A.D.

14. Make another tick mark 10 cm to the right and label it as 1800 A.D.

15. Make another tick mark 10 cm further to the right and label it as 1900 A.D.

16. Make a fourth tick mark 10 cm further to the right and label it as 2000 A.D.

17. Using your textbook, Marine Science, or other resources ( the iPad, etc.), identify

a. 10 different historical events in marine science by placing tick marks in the appropriate, corresponding place along both of these two lines and label them on the line only with the numbers 1-10 in correct chronological order.

b. The actual event and the year of that event are identified in the space below under the heading, “Historical Events in Marine Science.”

c. 10 other major historical events that are not related to marine science should also be identified in a similar manner (ex. man walks on the moon – 1969). This relates the history of marine science to other history.
