CE part 2 : Read the text and answer the questions :

On 6 April 1917, the German army has pulled back from a sector of the Western Front in northern France, because it has made a strategic withdrawal to overwhelm the British with artillery. In the British trenches two young British soldiers, Tom Blake and William Schofield are ordered by General Erinmore to carry a message to Colonel Mackenzie calling off a scheduled attack that would endanger the lives of 1,600 men, including Blake's brother Lieutenant Joseph Blake.

Schofield and Blake cross no man's land to reach the abandoned German trenches. In an underground barracks an explosion almost kills Schofield, but Blake saves him, and the two escape.

They arrive at an abandoned farmhouse, where they witness a German plane being shot down in flames. Schofield and Blake drag the injured pilot from the plane. The pilot stabs Blake and is shot dead by Schofield. Schofield is then picked up by a passing British unit.

A destroyed canal bridge near Écoust-Saint-Mein prevents British lorries from crossing. Schofield crosses alone, and comes under fire from a German sniper. the sniper is killed and Schofield is knocked out.

Continuing, Schofield is shot at. German soldiers give chase, but he escapes by jumping into a river. He is swept over a waterfall before reaching the riverbank by morning. In the forest, he finds D Company of the 2nd Devons, As the company starts to move toward the front, Schofield tries to reach Colonel Mackenzie. Schofield sprints across the battlefield. He forces his way into meeting Mackenzie, who reads the message and calls off the attack.

Schofield searches for Joseph among the wounded. Joseph is upset to hear of his brother's death, but thanks Schofield for his efforts. Schofield asks to write to their mother about Blake's heroics, to which Joseph agrees.

SÉANCE 4 : A soldier’s testimony

This is one of many letters sent by staff of the Great Western Railway (GWR) Audit office at Paddington who had enlisted to fight in the First World War. (RAIL 253/516)

Jonathan George Symons, 10 November 1915, France. Born: 22 August 1875, Joined GWR: 28 October 1889, Regiment: 13 County of London Regiment (King’s Royal Rifles Corps), Regiment number: 6389, Died: 1941

Dear Bert,

Just a few lines to let you know I am alright, hoping you are the same… At the present time we are in dugouts. The weather is simply awful, raining day after day and especially night after night…To tell you the truth, while writing this letter I am wet through to the skin and not a dry thing for a change. We have got our winter fur coats and gum boots, but the latter cause more curses than you can imagine, for instance last night I was sent off to select dugouts for our platoon, which is number 37. It was pitch dark, no light allowed and in a strange place, well honestly I fell over at least 20 times got smothered in mud from head to feet and on the top of that wet though for it rained in torrents. […]

Well I must now conclude…

Yours sincerely Jack Symons
