George III, The Church and King Club, Manchester, Silver Member’s Medals (2), 1790, by L Pingo, the King enrobed stands by altar, rev legend in sixteen lines, 46mm, contained within (a once glazed) silver rim with suspender (BHM 344). The actual medals nearly extremely fine but toned. (2) The membership of the Church and King Club were keen to keep Nonconformists out of local government at a time of unrest caused by both food shortages and politics. The Church and King Club worked up a riot against the radicals in St Anne’s Square and attacked the Cross Street Chapel and Unitarian Chapel in June 1792. There was an attack against the Manchester Herald (voice of the Manchester Constitution Club) in December of the same year at which the constables stood aside. £100-150

The Honourable Thomas Erskine and Vicary Gibbs, Attorneys General, the defenders of Horne Tooke, Thelwall and Hardy who were all members of the “Society of Friends of the People for Parliamentary Reform” and were acquitted of high treason in 1794. The gilding quite rubbed, nearly very fine. “The Most Ancient and Most Puissant Order of the Beggar’s Benison and Merryland”, better known as The Beggar’s Benison, was a gentlemen’s club founded in 1732 and devoted to “the convivial celebration of male sexuality”. Its benison or motto, “May prick and purse never fail you”, goes a long way to establish the calibre of the club. £120-150

Very fine and rare. The Turkish Admiral Barbarossa had established a strong naval base in Tunis. To defeat him, Charles V, at the cost of some 1,000,000 Ducats, assembled a huge army of 30,000 soldiers, 74 galleys (rowed by captive Protestants), and 300 sailing ships. £300-400

Astronomy and Mathematics, Austria, Theodore Egon Ritter von Oppolzer (1841-1886), Death 1886, Bronze Medal, by A Scharff, bust three-quarters left, rev legend in nineteen lines, 66mm (Hauser 7703; Würz 6964). Extremely fine. von Oppolzer first studied medicine and in 1865 he got his degree as a doctor. In 1866 he became Lecturer in Astronomy at the University of Vienna and in 1870 he was promoted to Associate Professor. 1873, He became Professor of Geodesy and Astronomy at Vienna in 1875 an in 1886 he became the president of the International Geodetic Association. In 1887 his “Canon der Finsternisse” was published posthumously, listing the time and path of every eclipse of the Sun and that of the Moon between the years of 1207 BC to 2163 AD. £120-150

The Continental-Caoutchouc und Gutta-Percha Compagnie was established in Hanover in 1871 and in the 1880s was the first German producer of pneumatic tyres, adding a patterned tread in 1904. In 1928 Continental took effective control of several other companies and in April 1929 it became known as Continental Gummi-Werke Aktiengesellschaft. The company still trades today. £80-120
