Change in Poverty Levels in the U.S. from 1970 to 2000 Transcript

Social Explorer Activity

Interactive Scenario Description

The poverty level was set in the 1950s. The federal government calculates the official U.S. poverty level as a specific amount of money needed to meet basic needs, depending on the size of the household. (This amount is not adjusted based upon cost of living, so it is uniform throughout the United States.) Census data allows you to see the official poverty line based on this level. In this activity, you are going to examine how the number of people below the level has changed from 1970 to 2000.

The student is asked if poverty levels have increased or decreased between 1970 and 2000. The 1970 map displays the majority of the states, reflecting 5–10% and 10–15%. Several states in the South, such as Mississippi, lower Texas, Georgia, and Kentucky had areas that were 40–50%.

The findings for 2000 displayed areas in the South with less poverty, with data reflecting 25–30%. The majority of the states displayed 5–10% and 10–15%. Some clusters displayed 15–20% levels of poverty.
