Ganges: River Of Life

Sunday, 18 October 2009

We descend from the foothills of the Himalayas to join the Ganges on its journey across the vast Indian plains. On the way, we

pass some of the greatest and most ancient cities, and witness how the Ganges has influenced Indian civilisation and wildlife

for thousands of years.

This episode takes us on a journey right across the vast central Indian plain. This was once the heart of India’s wilderness, a

thriving mosaic of jungle, grasslands and wetlands, home to tigers, elephants and wild buffalo.

These plains are also the cradle of Indian civilisation. For 5,000 years empires have flourished and fallen along the banks of

the Ganges. The program explores how the Mughals built magnificent palaces and diverted the river’s waters into huge irrigation

canals to create vast agricultural fields along the river banks. European invaders used the mighty river as a huge transport

route that brought ships, factories and warehouses to the banks of Ganges. And the British Raj left a legacy of railways,

colonial buildings and the great city of Calcutta.

Magnificent cities and buildings still play host to timeless festivals and rituals – from the cremation ghats in Varanasi to the

fire festivals in Haridwar and the ultimate celebration of the river, the Kumbh Mela in Allahabad, perhaps the largest human

gathering on Earth, attended by 50 million devotees.

Today, one-tenth of the world’s population lives within the Gangetic basin, yet, surprisingly, some wildlife still thrives on

these crowded plains. Sarus cranes now perform their courtship dances amongst rice paddies, whilst troops of macaques dwell in

ancient temples and mango orchards. But others, like the unique Gangetic river dolphins and gharial crocodiles, have all but

gone, only surviving in remote stretches of the river.

The 39 Steps

Sunday, 18 October 2009

Richard Hannay (Rupert Penry-Jones), a mining engineer back in London from Africa, is finding life incredibly dull. However, one

night as he returns home after a night out on the town, a neighbour, Scudder (Eddie Marsan), bursts in, begging for protection

from the German agents he claims are after him.

Scudder says he works for the British Secret Service and has discovered an undercover German plot to steal British plans for the

outbreak of war. He entrusts Hannay with a map and a coded notebook for safe-keeping.

When Scudder is murdered, Hannay finds himself on the run from both German agents and the police, and determined to crack the

code, hops a train to Scotland, to find the small village Scudder believed is the traitors’ meeting place.

However, before he can reach his destination, police board the train, and Hannay escapes to make his way across country on foot.

Unfortunately, the Germans are also in hot pursuit, and Hannay is forced to pass himself off as a visiting political speaker in

the local town, in order to get a lift from passing motorists Hellory Sinclair (Patrick Kennedy) and his sister Victoria (Lydia

Leonard), an outspoken suffragette.

For a short time he gets away with the ruse, until police storm the village meeting and he makes his escape, with Victoria

Sinclair an unwitting accomplice. He eventually convinces her of his real mission, but with the clock ticking, can Hannay and

Victoria outrun the police and German spies to avert a catastrophe?

Talking Heads

Monday, 19 October 2009

We all know her as ‘Cathy’, an athletic wild cat ready to strike, but now a refocused ‘Catherine’ has found new energy running a

foundation for Indigenous youth.

On Talking Heads, Peter Thompson chats to Cathy/Catherine Freeman to find out how she’s managed to refocus her energy since her

stunning victory in the 400 metres at the Sydney Olympics.

“Once you achieve a certain level of success in one field, you sure as hell are going to be aiming for that same level of

success in another,” she says.

Stepping away from the safe environment of elite athletics, Freeman admits she was lost for several years. She eventually

realised that the way forward lay in drawing together some of the main threads in her own story – self-confidence, family and

community. The Catherine Freeman Foundation’s goal is to motivate and educate kids in Queensland’s deprived community of Palm

Island.

“It was always a matter of curiosity that brought me back to Palm Island and to where my mother was born. It’s all with the view

of enabling Indigenous kids to recognise their own worth, to recognise their ability, just the way in which I learned at an

early age from my parents.”

Realising that the ‘glare’ of her fame could be harnessed for the benefit of others seems to have been a key revelation.

“The impact of that one moment has changed me forever. It's given me this energy now that I just simply can't deny.”

Ashes To Ashes

Monday, 19 October 2009

Animal rights activists have threatened a series of attacks in London and the first victim – the daughter of a commercial

laboratory owner – is in hospital. Gene (Philip Glenister) orders his team not to sleep until those responsible are behind bars.

Their first stop is a prison where Robin Elliot, a known animal rights campaigner, is serving time for killing a scientist in

the 1970s. Alex (Keeley Hawes) is convinced that Robin knows about the planned attacks, but with no contact with the outside

world there doesn’t appear to be any way for him to be involved.

Robin’s eerily prescient knowledge of the future makes Alex think that he could be involved not only with the case, but also

with her own fate. Having heard the voices of ambulance men, Alex worries that hope is fading for her survival in the present

day (2009).

Gene skirts closely towards a dangerous conflict with Supermac, who warns him to toe the line or face the consequences. As Alex

fights for her life and Gene fights for his career, can they prevent more casualties before time runs out?

The Sphinx Unmasked

Tuesday, 20 October 2009

It is the largest free standing sculpture ever carved from a single block; an icon recognised around the globe. The Sphinx, a

lion with the face of a mighty pharaoh, towers twenty metres high and stretches seventy metres long. It is a silent witness to

thousands of years of history. For over 4,500 years it has stood guard in front of the Giza Pyramids, yet it remains one of

history’s most enigmatic mysteries.

Based in Cairo, top Egyptologist Dr Vassil Dobrev has spent over twenty years researching the Sphinx, and has a theory that

proposes a completely new and previously unrecognised pharaoh as the builder of the Sphinx. His name was Djedefre, and according

to Dobrev’s pioneering research, he was the true driving force behind some of the most remarkable structures in all of ancient

Egypt.

Yet to prove that this little-known king created this incredible monument, Dobrev must first crack a conundrum that has baffled

Egyptologists for years – he must unmask the Sphinx to reveal the identity of its face. Yet the final proof lies in the

intricacies of the design – does the Sphinx bear the face of the Djedefre’s father, Khufu?

To solve the mystery Dobrev forced his mind back 4,500 years to the time of the ancient Egyptians. Long before tourist roads had

obscured the ancient pathways, the Pharaohs approached the Sphinx not from the East, but from the south. When Dobrev adopted

this new perspective and looked at the Sphinx in profile as the ancient Egyptians did in most art and architecture, suddenly the

solution presented itself. The Sphinx is perfectly aligned with the Great Pyramid – a monument built by none other than Khufu,

Djedefre’s father.

So Dobrev’s theory establishes the identity of the builder of the Sphinx, the subject of the face of the Sphinx, the pyramid it

is aligned with, and why it was built. Just one final riddle remains: when was it built?

guide to locally produced seasonal food. He raids River Cottage’s kitchen garden in Dorset, to show viewers they can enjoy a

slice of any season, River Cottage style, wherever they live, with tantalising recipes.

John Safran's Race Relations

Wednesday, 21 October 2009 New Series

Pasty bespectacled comic John Safran is back with an eight-part doco-comedy. And it’s his most daring and personal adventure

yet. It’s about cross-cultural, interracial and interfaith love.

Mass migration has changed everything. Today, chances are high that someone you get a crush on at school, meet at a club, or get

chatting to by the photocopier will not be from your tribe. The feel-good position is ‘love will conquer all’. John suspects

it's not that simple.

With this, he launches himself into an insane, globetrotting journey: Israel, Palestine, Togo, Japan, the Philippines, Thailand,

the UK, the Netherlands and the USA.

We soon discover John has a vested interest in his topic. Growing up in Melbourne’s insular Jewish community the pressure is on

to marry a Jew. Torn between this indoctrination and his inclination to hit on Eurasians, John comes up with some of the

craziest, most disorienting television ever. No, John hasn't mellowed since John Safran vs God, he's arguably become completely

mad.

John hears an Asian wife will age better than a white one. The result is a wince-inducing road test that will make you dive

under the couch to escape the TV. You will fear for John's safety as he turns black and goes undercover in Obama’s hometown.

To discover what his dead mother thinks of his marrying a non-Jew, John hits the cemetery with a shovel and a Kabbalah prayer

book. He becomes a ladyboy and an Elephant Man - all in an attempt to make sense of cross-cultural love.

Safran might be figuratively crucified for this series. But as he is literally crucified in the climax, he’s not too worried.

You see, John Safran just needs to know: when it comes to love, should you stick with your tribe or escape your tribe?

Grand Designs Revisited: Brighton

Thursday, 22 October 2009 New Series

Kevin McCloud revisits some of the homes featured in the first series of Grand Designs and catches up with the owners to see how

they’ve settled into their dream homes.

In this episode, he revisits a co-operative of ten families who built ten homes in Brighton, UK.

Prior to forming the co-operative, the families were travellers or lived in insecure accommodation. The local council bought

built, at an affordable rent.

The co-operative did all the work themselves and everyone had to do a set amount of hours each week which meant all of them

struggled financially because they didn’t have time to find full time work.

Catching Cancer

Thursday, 22 October 2009

One in three of us will get cancer some time in life. The common cry at diagnosis is “why me?’’. We blame our genes, our

environment and our lifestyle, but could we be overlooking another crucial cause?

Across the world, a select group of scientists is hunting cancer-causing infections. Startling new evidence is revealing that

viruses and bacteria are triggering one of the biggest killers of our time.

One in five cancers worldwide is caused by infection. Does this mean we can catch cancer?

Featuring world experts, Nobel Laureates and virus hunters on the front line, this is a fast-paced investigation of a

provocative idea. Travelling deep into the mysterious cellular world of cancer, it demonstrates how cancer begins and what

factors rig the lethal odds of the ‘lottery’ of cancer.

Jennifer Byrne Presents: True Crime

Jennifer Byrne Presents is a series of individual treats for lovers of books and writing. It features discussions with leading authors and investigations into the popularity of writing genres such as crime, sex and romance and fantasy.

In this special, Jennifer and her guests explore the macabre world of true life crime novels. Before the judge’s hammer has even declared a suspect guilty or innocent, the books are on the shelves.

It’s generally held that the true crime genre has been around since the end of the 19th century. Before this writers such as Wilkie Collins and Charles Dickens would borrow incidents and characters from real crimes for their novels, such as Collins’s book The Moonstone which was based on the Road Hill House murder.

But even before crimes were written up in novels, broadsheets and later non-fiction accounts, the tales were spread through other formats. Broadsheet ballads from the sixteenth through nineteenth centuries presented gory details of crimes long with moralistic overtones. And ‘True confessions’ by criminals were printed in pamphlet form in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

It is Truman Capote who is usually held up as the grandfather of modern true crime for In Cold Blood, his fictionalised account of a family’s murder. True crime has moved away from just telling straight tales of murder, into exploring the psychological aspect of killers, telling tales of gangsters, bikies, blackmailers, detailing police and trial procedures, forensics, and of course having the criminal himself telling the tale.

For the true crime special, Jennifer has a line up of the usual literary suspects: Rochelle Jackson, Richard Shears, Jack Marx and Andrew Rule

The New Inventors

Hosted by James O’Loghlin, The New Inventors highlights the latest contemporary creations from the new generation of inventors, innovators and designers. Deciding the winner of these three inventions are: agricultural scientist Chris Russell, materials engineer Veena Sahajwalla, and futurist and author Mark Pesce. Inventions featured on the program:

PEDIGREE MATCHMAKER – by inventors Steve Semple and Mark Mortimer from NSW. Everyone likes to know who their parents are, but for farmers, knowing the pedigree of their flock can make a big difference to their income. Last month a world record was set when a British farmer paid $445 500 for the ‘perfect’ ram. But to breed better sheep, you need to know where those prize-winning genes are going, and in Australia most lambs are born in the paddock when no-one is around. Lambs stay close to their mothers when they’re born, and until now, following them around has been the best way to try and determine family lines. Steve Semple, a livestock research officer who gave up Sydney for the bush, and Mark Mortimer who owns a very successful sheep stud, combined forces to invent a solution.

The Pedigree Matchmaker is an electronic system that can more accurately determine which lamb belongs to which ewe. The system uses radio frequency identification tags to measure data about the proximity of particular lambs to particular ewes as they pass through a gate. Over a six-week period the tags are read every time the lambs pass through the gate and past the reader. The data logger registers the distance in time between every sheep and ewe. The ones that average the closest readings over this time will be the ones that are matched. This allows breeders to concentrate on the best in their flock, ensuring they can continue to breed prized sheep into the future.

VAC SAC – by inventor Kenneth Miles from NSW. Animal vaccine must be kept at two degrees to ensure its reliability. However, when you're out on the farm vaccinating a whole herd of cattle, it won't be long before the solution is as much as 35 degrees, rendering it ineffective. Eighteen-year-old Kenneth Miles has invented the Vac Sac, an insulated cooler bag designed to keep vaccines cool while out in the field. It has three internal compartments. The vaccine goes into the centre compartment and two ice packs sit on either side. In addition to our young farmer, a special guest, Rosie the calf, will be in the studio to help us demonstrate Kenneth’s invention.

NOVATANK – by inventor John Petschel from VIC. Getting water tanks to remote locations is extremely difficult, time-consuming and expensive. Water tanks are used for many industrial and agricultural purposes, often in remote locations. The Novatank is a 5000 litre collapsible water tank, which can be stacked and transported in its protective plastic shell, which is only 2m wide and 42cm high, so it can be easily manoeuvred into almost any position or location, inside or out. Once in place, the tank can be expanded into a fully functioning water tank.

Catalyst

The Rise of Slime

An army of sumo-size jelly fish is invading the Sea of Japan. Like a scene from a sci-fi movie, giant Nomura jellyfish weighing over 200 kilograms and reaching up to 2 meters in length are devastating marine life as they advance every year in ever increasing numbers from the East China Sea. These ancient gelatinous creatures are crippling the local fishing industry and threatening the livelihood of local fishermen. In a desperate bid to control this ‘rise of slime’ the Japanese government has commissioned fishermen to gather and destroy all the jellyfish they can haul from the sea. Dr Maryanne Demasi visits the fishermen and the Japanese scientists working together to understand more about this extraordinary phenomenon.

Coal Seam Gas

Amid growing concerns about our contribution to global warming, there has never been greater attention on the greenhouse emissions that come from using coal. For decades, scientists have worked to develop technologies that can unlock the energy from coal while reducing the risks of digging it up and burning it. Now entirely new industries are tapping into coal seams either too gassy or too deep to be mined by conventional methods. A new boom in fossil fuel is sweeping southern Queensland with two competing and radically different technologies that convert coal to cleaner burning gas - underground coal gasification (UCG), and coal seam gas (CSG). Mark Horstman heads to south-east Queensland to check out what’s driving the new coal rush.
