Round 5 – Kid’s Stuff

Theme: All of the answers in this packet will relate to either children’s culture or other pop culture whose titles make reference to children. For example, a tossup on the “Three Ninjas” would be fair game, as would a tossup on “The Girl from Ipanema”.

TOSSUPS:

1) Funrise, who also runs tournaments for this game, has recently tried to reintroduce it, adding new features like an authenticator that reveals a secret word on genuine play pieces, which only it manufactures.  Football and Elvis themes appear on a type of gift certificate currency created by the Army Air Force Exchange Services that is often known by this name, used because they cost less to transport than metal coins.  The name of this game derives from fruit used in drinks including Guava Juice.  The modern form of this game was created by Blossom Galbiso in her 5th grade math class, although they were banned in many schools due to the "for keeps" rules often used.  Originating in Hawaii where it was played with milk caps, FTP, identify this game that spawned a craze in the early 90s, where slammers are thrown down on stacks of the namesake circular pieces of cardboard.

2) On Boy Meets World, Corey enters the Geography Bee against Minkus once he hears that the winner will get to be one of these.  One memoir of a person to hold this role was published by Dominick Ardovino, while another memoir by Matthew McGough became the basis of a CBS show starring Jeremy Sumpter in this position, the short-lived Clubhouse.  One person to hold this position was suspended for unsuccessfully attempting to drink a gallon of milk in a bet made with Brad Penny.  One of the most famous people to hold this position was a mascot-slash-hunchbank named named Eddie Bennett, whose absence was blamed by the White Sox for losing the 1920 World Series.  Darren Baker was almost run down by David Bell when serving in this position, but J. 3) An Australian film with this name spawned a spin-off television series starring Alex Dimitriades about students at Hartley High.  An earlier film with this name had a screenplay written by Neil Simon based on a Bruce Jay Friedman short story and starred Eddie Albert as Mr. Corcoran, the domineering father of one of the women in this film.  That film also starred Jeannie Berlin, Cybil Shepherd and Charles Grodin, and was remade into a more recent film that for some reason cast Carlos Mencia as Uncle Tito.  The New York Times criticized Rob Corddry for giving up his Daily Show position to star as "third rate sidekick" Mac in this film, and the protagonist discovers to his annoyance that Lila likes to sing along to the radio and enjoys kinky sex.  In it, protagonist Eddie gets stung by jellyfish and pissed on while in pursuit of Miranda, a woman he meets on his honeymoon.  FTP, identify this movie starring Ben Stiller trying to dump his wife.

4) In a strange early appearance, he offers to trade Nixon and Kennedy campaign buttons for a Huckleberry Hound button.  A Comics Curmudgeon post on April 7th of this year insinuated that he was the "bastard, malformed spawn of late-stage capitalism."  This blond haired character usually wears a red shirt, and has asked riveting questions like, "Why did they make you a bachelor of arts, Mommy?  Didn't they know you were a girl?" and "Did anchormen and anchorwomen start out as anchorkids?"  His black friend Morrie is the only African American in the strip he appears in, and his similarly named father, who was originally known as Steve, is a cartoonist who is married to Thelma.  He has also been known to crudely draw the comic he appears in.  FTP, identify this character whose presumed OCD makes him around in dotted-line paths as the oldest son in the Family Circus comics.

5) The Japanese version of this game had a much more difficult fourth stage, requiring you to press the A button in order to fly, and was known as "Myth of Light: The Mirror of Palutena."  That version was also a launch game for the Famicom Disk System, so you could save games rather than writing down "Sacred Words" passwords like you do in the American version.  Hospital rooms in this game cure the obnoxious spell which prevents you from attacking, cast by nefarious Eggplant Wizards.  At the end of each of the first three worlds there are fortresses, containing bosses like Pandora.  Items like feathers and hammers can be bought at Black Market shops, and the game also contains fountains of youth and treasure chambers.  Culminating in a fight against Medusa, FTP, identify this NES game starring Pit, of Super Smash Bros. Brawl fame.

6) Angela Bassett stalkers probably remember that her second role came as a stewardess in this movie, while other minor roles include Jayne Brook as the domestically abused Mrs. Sullivan.  Trouble brews in this film when Eleanor, the killer's mother, poisons the star witness testifying against him and thus gets her son released from prison.  The Cousins twins play the central child actor in this film, a character who plays with toys that have lasers in them to protect him from "bad people".  Another tense moment in this film is resolved by the protagonist's pet ferret, who bites Richard Tyson's character Cullen Crisp.  The oft soundboarded lines "It's not a tumor!" and "Who is your daddy and what does he do?" come from this film.  FTP, identify this movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger as John Kimble, a police officer turned elementary school teacher.

7) One of this album's most successful tracks borrows from experimental 1970s synthesizer music, including Arthur Kreiger's "Short Piece" and Paul Lansky's "Mild und Leise."  Early pressings of this album included a secret booklet underneath the CD tray which contains pictures of a yellow Tony Blair grinning, while its cover shows an icy computer rendered mountain range partially designed by "Tchock."  It concludes with the hidden track "Motion Picture Soundtrack," and opens with "Everything in its Right Place."  SNL's house band was used to provide brass for a live performance of "National Anthem" off of this album, while its title track mentions how "I slipped away on a little white lie."  Containing tracks like "Idioteque" and "Optimistic", FTP, identify this Radiohead album, the follow-up to OK Computer.

8) Some of the early ones of these in the United States were produced by Charles Loof and the Philadelphia Toboggan Company, giving rise to the Coney Island and Philadelphia styles of them.  Sandusky, Ohio is home to a museum devoted to these where you can learn about the innovations made in the genre by Gustav Dentzel who introduced double decker varieties and organ music to them.  The tallest one of these can travel up to 70 kilometers per hour and is called the Himmelskibet or Star Flyer, while the Arkansas Over the Jumps one is unique in that the track itself is hilly like a roller coaster.  One named Columbia is a prominent attraction at Six Flags Great America, and Central Park's was produced by their greatest creators, Stein and Goldstein.  Manual ones are commonly found at playgrounds and involve children or parents providing the mechanism for rotation.  FTP, identify this ubiquitous carnival attractions where riders mount horses that circle around a pivoting turn table.

9) A cover of "The Kids in America" by The Donnas plays as the final song in the credits for this movie, a few minutes after it is revealed that David Doty played Father Murphy back in the protagonist's home town.  It opens with Chris Kattan stealing from a church, and after the protagonist almost falls off the church's roof she makes an agreement with her father, played by Tate Donovan, to give up her primary hobby.  Popular girls Trish and Inga get Corky to humiliate the protagonist by faking a need for CPR.  It is eventually revealed that Jane Brighton is the daughter of Leshing and actress Dehlia Draycott, before the protagonist hooks up with Ned Nickerson.  Most of the action takes place in Los Angeles after the protagonist, played by Emma Roberts, moves away from River Heights with her father.  FTP, identify this 2007 film adaptation of some classic detective novels created by Carolyn Keene.

10) The pilot for this show contained a segment titled "Naked for Jesus", while a 2000 reunion tour included a bit on "Bloody, Salty Ham", a variation on "Fine Ham Abounds".  The house band on this show was made up of Don Pyle, Reid Diamond, and Brian Connelly,  Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet, who recorded the theme song, "Having an Average Weekend."  Recurring characters on this show include one who warns that it's "chop chop" if a favor is rejected, the Polite Ax Murderer, and the Queen of England, who always addresses letters to Budderick, a gay character who was the main focus of the "Chalet 2000" episode and is more commonly known as Buddy Cole.  Its all-male, frequently-in-drag cast included Scott Thompson and Mark McKinney.  FTP, identify this Canadian sketch comedy show that starred Kevin McDonald and Dave Foley.

Although he took anger management classes following a domestic dispute, his ex-wife's divorce claim asserted that he broke her rib by smashing her face against the console in his car. After being traded for Stephon Marbury, his best years were helped by teammates like Kerry Kittles and Kenyon Martin, although that team was swept by the Lakers and then fell to the Spurs in the 2002 and 2003 finals. 13) This actress's memoir recounted how she had to provide a weekly urine sample to Lloyd's of London due to the insurance policy taken out on her.  Her namesake television show, originally called "[her] Storybook," saw her star as Ozma and Tip in an adaptation of The Land of Oz.  She was put in only two features, Kathleen and Miss Annie Rooney, following a falling out with MGM, although this wife of Charlie Beck had earlier been much more successful when teaming up with James Dunn to sing Jay Gourney's "Baby Take a Bow" in Stand up and Cheer.  This actress also starred in Bright Eyes and as Susan Turner in The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer, and later in her life served as the US ambassador to the United Nations.  Finding her greatest success in films such as Wee Willie Winkie and Heidi, FTP, identify this Depression-era child star.

16) His wide array of relatives, including Billy Billy Bo Willy Banana Fanna Fo Filly, are obsessed with root beer.  This character has invented devices like the Enlargetron, and in the first episode in which he appears, he climbs into the brain of one character in order to get that character to bring some food to Karen, his computer and wife, which eventually analyzes him as 1% evil and 99% hot gas.  Suing for a lack of a wet floor sign and hiding inside of a giant dollar bill are two of his many formulations to ruin his main rival.  Via the execution of Evil Plan 26 Z, this character, who is fond of saying "I went to college," frames his business rival for stealing the crown of King Neptune, but is sent to jail for placing everyone in Bikini Bottom under mind control.  FTP, name this SpongeBob character, a rival of Mr. Krabs and the owner of the Chum Bucket.

18) A video for this song sees people rowing behind the band as they play in Hyde Park.  This song sees the singer hearing bells chiming, leading him to conclude that he'll go out of his mind if he doesn't go away.  Opening with a sample of "I'm Happy Just to Dance With You," this song also lends its name to a project created by Jeff Stein after winning over manager Bill Curbishley, which was intended to show recorded footage of a 1977 concert at the Guamont State Theatre but actually contained footage shot at Shepperton Studios.  Modern performances of this song, which opens "I don't mind other guys dancing with my girl," often comment on the death of John Entwistle.
