PARIS IN THE SPRINGTIME
by Dennis Wunsch
It is hard to imagine a more ideal day for a cruise than we experienced on the 20th of April. The morning was warm and fog free, the cars were shined and tuned, and the Club members were eager to open the season of
touring with a shakedown run to Parris Island.
Nine of our British jewels wended their way down Hwy. 17 to
Beaufort where we were met by a stunning group of eight more exquisite beauties. The two groups combined into one fabulous parade to Parris Island.
Our Club cars consisted of two Healeys, one MGTD, one XJ120,
two late model Jags, one MGBGT, one TR6, and one Spitfire MK2.
The Beaufort contingent included one Healey, one MGTD, one
MGTF, one MG BGT (which is for sale), two TR6's, one XJ120,
and one Morgan. Talk about a great mix!
Upon arrival at Parris Island, we were issued passes, albeit not quickly, and drove to the Marine Corps Museum. The museum is a wonderful memorial to our
Marines, and covers every phase of the Corps from the civil war to date. This is a definite must see, and really requires a much longer visit to take it all in, but we were on a schedule and were to meet up with some of the group at the Marina for a get together and
lunch at the Bank Restaurant for lunch, followed by a leisurely stroll through the stores and antique shops in downtown Beaufort.
Unfortunately, even the best of days must end, and the drive home gave one plenty of time to recount the events of the day, the new friends made, the old friends rejoined, and visions of a beautiful summer ahead.
I urge all members to come out and drive their classics in events such as these. You will enjoy it...I guarantee!
Thanks to Jim Clees for arranging this experience, it was great.
ON THE ROAD AGAIN ...
by Mike West
The phrase might be a little old and maybe a little tired, but it’s so appropriate. After all, we won’t be “Headin Down the Highway” or saying “Baby You Can Drive My Car” like the Beatles song played during Jack Lambert’s recent interview by Channel 4 about his Brit Beauties.
On the road again is exactly what I’m proposing. On Sunday, May 19th I’d love to meet lots of you Brit Clubbies at the Walmart in Moncks Corner at 9:30 a.m. From there we can drive down 41/402, and as those of you who have joined me before know, there will be lots of interesting twists and turns along our way to Hwy. 17 so that we can enjoy the scenery, the scents of spring flowers and perhaps even some wildlife.
I discovered this interesting little pub on Longpoint Road in Mt. Pleasant called the “Dog and Duck”. I said it was interesting, including the name! In any case, I

THE PREZ SEZ
Howdy. We had a great turnout for our run to Beaufort and Parris Island with 18 cars, no rain in sight, and all temp gauges reading warm (obviously, thanks to regular maintenance). Diane tells me that there is an article from Dennis Wunsch on the trip, so I’ll let you see what you missed when you read it.
I want to extend a very special thank you to Jim Clees who coordinated the Charleston leg of the event and to Bob Richie who coordinated the Beaufort/ Parris island leg. Great team work and BCCC spirit!
Diane and I will be traveling to Winston-Salem to participate in “The Gathering” at the Reynolda House Museum of American Art. To give a bit of background info, one can enjoy masterpieces of American art which are displayed in the gracious American country home built in 1912 - 1917 by Katharine Smith and Richard Joshua (R.J.) Reynolds, founder of the tobacco manufacturing company. Named to the National Register of Historic Places, Reynolda House repre-sents a vanished lifestyle. Once the center of a 1,000 acre estate, the historic house museum is now enhanced by restored formal gardens and shops and restaurants that occupy its former farm buildings and cottages.
The Reynolda Gardens of Wake Forest University was originally part of the 1,000 acre estate and includes four acres of formal gardens, a greenhouse, range, and 125 acres of fields/woods. Volunteers assist with garden and educational activities.
Bobby Grooms and I went to the car show one year and were pleasantly surprised by all the Reynolds House Museum and grounds had to offer. Diane decided that instead of going to Tanglewood this year, since we’ve gone for the past five years, she’d like to check out “The Gathering”. I know she’ll be as pleasantly surprised as I was. I understand that Diane has arranged for Dennis Wunsch and Tina Lacey to drive up with us to Columbia where we’re meeting Bob Parfitt and Mary Stokes who will complete the trip with us. I just know we’re going to have a great time!!!
Of course, common sense dictates that before embarking on any trip, you:
before starting the car, check the crank case oil. Make sure you have an extra quart in the boot.
Check brake and clutch fluids. If low, add some. If it’s a very long trip or over mountain roads or if the fluid is low or dirty, pull a front wheel to see if you have any brake pad left.
I’ll share a personal experience I had which leads me to give the above advice.
Not taking my own advice, I neglected to check the afore-mentioned items and headed out to an MG Gathering in Dillard, GA. Sometime while traveling along mountainous roads, evi-dently what little I had left of brake pads, disappeared.
Not easily discouraged, I scouted out the correct parts at the car show and actually located a mechanic who was open on Sat- urday in that little town. In fact, not having the opportunity to work on Brit cars often enough (he said he does enjoy them), he moved an American car out of his bay and put mine in its place. Within an hour, Diane and I were back on the road.
Finding the right parts and mechanic who knew what he was doing was sheer luck. However, don’t leave your fate to luck. Instead, take the time to com-plete these routine tasks in order to alleviate unnecessary delays.
Check all belts. If any are cracked or have chunks missing, replace them. You might even throw a spare in your boot. After all, a “roadside adventure” doesn’t mean the same thing to everybody. It’s not so bad if you have arm covers. You know, those covers that look like socks and are heat resistant so
PREZ SEZ (cont.)
you won’t burn yourself when working around hot items under the hood.
Radiator - Check for fluids and top off as necessary. Check hoses for frays, wear, cracks or fluid weeps.
Fuel Lines - Check to ensure dry lines. If not, tighten clamps and inspect hoses for wear and checking. Some have metal pipes between rubber coming from the fuel pump to the carbs.
After looking over these items, start the car, but leave the hood open to look at the fuel lines and heater hoses. Fluid may have dried up if the vehicle has been setting for a while.
If all is well with Phase I, move on to Phase II -
Boot - Perform inspection.
Spare Tire - Do you have one? Is it good? Leaks? Plenty of air?
Do you have a jack and tire iron?
Basic tools - Do you have the basic necessary tools?
Flashlight - When traveling at night, this is essential. One very important thing to remember, is that it doesn’t do any good if the batteries are spent.
Duct Tape - Last, but certainly not least is the fix-everything, go-anywhere, ever-versatile ... DUCT TAPE!
YES, I do consider this a tool. In fact, one of the most impor-tant that you’ll ever carry.
The key word for Diane and me this year is ‘DRIVE”. we plan to attend more shows, but maybe not just the local ones. We want to drive our cars and enjoy open roads, scenery, scents, and sounds ... We want to take it all in while we talk, joke and laugh ... oh yes, there’s lots of talking and laughing on our journeys.
We’ve got a fun rally 90% com-plete and promise to finish it so that we can run it this year. Also, it recently came to mind that the BCCC held a night rally prior to our joining the Club. Wouldn’t that be a blast to run? After all, we’re finally participat-ing in a night parade in Mt. Pleasant, why not a night rally?
Anyone feel like picking up the ball and running with it???
In the past, several of us have gotten together and taken a drive out of town. These can be overnighters, show related or not, and actually just for the heck of it! In fact, I sense that one might be in order to head up to the Highlands (NC). What a great trip this time of year. Hint, hint!!!
A trip to Charlotte with stops at Sports Car Salvage and Von Patterson’s shop would be another interesting and fun trip. Hint, hint!!!
A trip to Dillsboro and a train ride through the Smoky Moun-tains with a side trip to Cherokee could be fun. We could make our donations at the casino on the Reservation or take along fishing rods to pursue “the one that got away” or at least devel-op “the one that got away” tale.
Whatever your vision, traveling in a group is a great way to see and explore and just enjoy the beauty of our great country. Hopefully, this is the nudge that’s needed to get the ball rolling towards our next adven-ture. Who knows, the trip you put together may just be the one that our members keep talking about. remember, WE are the Club. If you’ve never done anything like this before, it could be just what you need.
Remember, DOING is always more fun than WATCHING!
Until we meet again ...
Your Humble Servant
Jack Lambert
MINUTES
The April 9, 2002 BCCC meeting was held at Breck’s Restaurant of N.Charleston with 29 members and guests.
The meeting was called to order by Jack Lambert, President, who asked new members to introduce themselves. Also, members present who have not attended meetings for several months were acknowledged.
Jack asked members for sugges-tions for meeting places as we are always looking for new, suitable places.
Charlie King noted that “stand-out” headlamps on British cars became obsolete when MG inte-grated them into the front fen-ders in 1954 on with the TF.
Diane Lambert announced that the fun rally scheduled for April 13th had been canceled.
Jack reported that many car shows have been scheduled and advertised for the spring and summer and read a list of some of the more popular events.
Jim Clees gave a brief report on the Beaufort trip scheduled for April 20th. Bob Ritchie is assist-ing with this event. Jim passed a “final sign-up” sheet and stated that security at Parris Island had been one of the requirements he needed to contend with.
Jack reported that British Wire Wheel Co. of California gives a discount to BCCC members.
Diane announced that rooms in Winston-Salem for The Gather-ing are filling up fast. Anyone interested, please contact Diane. The group will meet Bob Parfitt and Mary Stokes in Columbia.
Jack announced that the Morgan Owners Group will hold a gathering at Dawson, GA on April 13th. Two hundred cars are expected. For more info, contact Charlie King.
Darryl Beech reported that the Jaguar Society of SC will hold the Lowcountry Classic meet on May 11th at Brittlebank Park in Charleston. No non-Jag classes are scheduled for this event. Darryl reported that the Jaguar club has a web site now and flyers for scheduled events can be downloaded. Darryl sugges-ted that this would be a good and efficient medium for the BCCC for flyers and newsletter distribution.
Diane reminded everyone that Mike Carnell keeps the Palmetto- website up-dated with the latest Windscreen, meeting info and other Club activities.
Darryl commented that the Spring Spinoff car show at Tech will be April 20th.
For his tech tips, Jack stated that a cleaning product - S100 - is available at motorcycle shops and works very well on chrome and painted surfaces. Jack also advised that caution should be taken when using Conley’s hide food for leather because of the tendency to dry leather. Also WD-40 works well on locks, hinges and springs.
Wayne Wright read an article concerning the recent fire at the Triumph Motorcycle factory in England. The company hopes to be up and running again soon. Triumph began manufacturing bikes in 1902.
Jack acknowledged members with birthdays in April.
Dennis Wunsch reported that the Hero Games at Blackbaud Stadi-um were entertaining. We had seven club autos on display at this event. Dennis also read an article concerning production of an MG Rover vehicle in China.
Jack advised that the magazine “Practical Classics” is a very good publication for enthusiasts and can be acquired on E-Bay.
Jack announced that Channel 4 had done a human interest story about him and his affection for British autos. Jim Clees has a video of this classic, and repor-tedly will sell copies to members for $250.00. (just kidding).
Diane reported that Mike West has planned a drive/tour for May 19th starting at Walmart in Moncks Corner.
Diane had flyers, membership applications and calling cards available.
Dennis Wunsch, Regalia Coor-dinator, had shirts, hats and T-shirts. Car badges and name badges are also available.
Mert Fox presented the financial report with a balance of $3,046.66. The report was approved as presented.
Jack suggested that members wear BCCC apparel to out-of-town events.
Mike Grosso reported that his new garage is almost complete. He also stated that it’s not a museum; just a garage.
For sale item: a 1989 Jaguar XJS for $1,500. See Darryl Beech.
Darryl’s dad needs a door latch for a Morgan, and Frank O’Neil needs an MG TD wheel.
Meeting adjourned.

thought we could end our journey there to partake of some refreshments and camaraderie.
No need to call me, just meet at the Moncks Corner Walmart at 9:30 on Sunday, May 19th!
I believe we had nine vehicles participate in the previous drive to Johns Island, Hollywood, etc. Let’s see if we can have more this time, and it would be fun to have people join in who don’t usually “do” drives. It’s great fun!
