Welcome to Miss Drogosz’s First Grade Class

Welcome to Dr. Walshire’s First Grade Class

Classroom Procedures

Classroom Rules: During the first week of school, we will establish as a class what we expect of each other in order to have a fun, learning environment. Ideas will generally develop in the following categories:

1. Listen Carefully

2. Follow Directions

3. Work Quietly

4. Respect others, their property, and our school

5. Work and play safely

6. Use inside voices

Behavior Management: Managing behavior virtually will be completely new to me, and to be honest, I am not sure what to expect. What I do expect is that it will take students time to learn the technology, learn the routine, and learn what is expected of them. The length of time at which we as teachers are expected to have students engaged is lofty, and I know it will take time to build their stamina for listening and doing. We will spend time reviewing Zoom etiquette and discussing how we will still adhere to the tenets of PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) they are already familiar, including what it means to be safe, respectful, and responsible.

Schedule: Our schedule was determined based on the remote learning guidelines by the state; a minimum of 2.5 hours of synchronous learning for grades K-5 and not to exceed five total hours of instruction each day. Synchronous=live instruction and asynchronous= independent work time or receiving instruction via recording. Please know that asynchronous times also include time your child receives small group or more guided instruction from the classroom teacher.

8:30-9:00 Morning Meeting-synchronous

9:00-9:30 English Language Arts-synchronous

9:30-10:30 English Language Arts-asynchronous

10:30-11:00 Specials: Monday/Friday-Music

Tuesday/Thursday-PLTW

Wednesday-Art

11:00-11:30 Social Studies/Science-synchronous

11:30-12:00 Physical Education

12:00-1:00 Lunch

2:30-3:00 Student Support

Zoom and Seesaw: The link to access Zoom will be sent to your child as a Seesaw activity and will be a recurring link your student can use to access our meetings. In other words, we will use the same link every day (unless for some reason it needs to be changed). When working between the synchronous and asynchronous activities within our class, your child does not need to end the call; rather, they can stay on for the duration of the call and I will signal (with chimes or a doorbell) for your child to return to the meeting. If for some reason they get out of the Zoom call, simply click the original link to rejoin. This is the same link your child will need to go to when they LEAVE my call and go to their specials and have to reenter my class.

Seesaw: Seesaw is an easy-to-use way for students to complete assignments and showcase their work. What is even more exciting is that parents can see the work their child is doing in real-time. I will often send a notification to all parents via Seesaw so be sure to have Notifications enabled so you don’t miss anything. You can also privately message me in Seesaw by simply replying to my message. Most of the activities your child will do will be completed in the Seesaw app. Please be sure your Home Access Code is working properly (which should be coming home soon) by making sure your child has access to all of his/her classes. To check this, go to the top, left-hand corner where your child’s name is listed. When you click on your child’s name, several classes should be listed. If you don’t see more than just my class, please let me know so we can resolve this. I include voice directions for every activity and often there is a video your child should watch that is included in the “Instructions” to help your child understand what is expected of them.

Tips for Successful iPad Learning:

1. Have your child get in the habit of charging their iPad every night like we would at school.

2. Make sure your child has used the bathroom and eaten breakfast before starting the day.

3. Make a quiet, calming learning space free of toys and other distractions for your child so that he/she can attend and participate in the meeting without becoming distracted.

4. Be sure to have all your child’s materials ready for learning and working independently to prevent your child from leaving the room.

5. If Zoom is being goofy, swipe the app and try clicking on the meeting link again.

6. Set two alarms on your child’s iPad; one to alert them for the start of the day AND one to get finished up from lunch and ready for the afternoon to begin. Here’s how:

-Go to the CLOCK app on your child’s iPad.

-Click the orange + in the top right corner.

-Scroll to set the first time for 8 25 AM (giving your child 5 minutes to

prepare for getting started)

-Click Repeat and select Every Monday, Every Tuesday, Every Wednesday,

Every Thursday, and Every Friday (an orange check should appear after

each one)

-Click the orange word ................
